This Should Be A Challenge
OK...I want to do a "Winter" peak bagging trip of some of the ADK's 4k'ers, and Sunday March 20 is the first day of Spring. Therefore, I technically have until then to do this trip.

Been thiking of heading out Wed night (16th) and crashing in van, driving in and hiking to one of the leantos up from Ward Brook on Thurs (17th), hitting Seward, Donaldson and Emmons on Fri (18th), Seymour on Sat (19th) and (maybe) move to a leanto closer to the vehicle, then heading out and drive home on Sun (20th).

I'll bail on the plans only if I don't have anyone to hike with. I don't mind soloing, but in Winter would be stupid (to say the least) to go alone.

As soon as someone is interested I'll post more info. Frankly, I'll still post more info, ie. local weather links, maps, etc. when I get to it.

Who's with me?

Hey Buddur, I can't go on thursday, but I might be interested. I have a trip scheduled for the Catskills that same weekend but nobody has commited to it and like you I don't like to go alone. Can I tempt you with the Cats?

Already Requested And Have The Time Off
Not really "waiting" because I know the Thursday schedule will definitly limit interest. I have one month to use up my last 2 paid vacation days off, and since I haven't done a cold-weather trip this season AND someday hope to have the 46 under my belt, it only seems right for me to hit the area.

And I've never done a "winter" peak bag there yet, even though I've done a peak in those conditions...

When I get my mind on something it's hard for me to stray from the thought...sorry, but I'm hitting the Daks come hell or high water.

Trying To Juggle Itinerary For You
LtHiker, what are the chances you can get to the base of Calkin's Brook on Fri night so as to get up early Sat morning to hike up it and hit the Sewards?

Frankly, I'm not sure if a camp can be set up there but that is where I plan to set camp for the range hike.

Where would I hike in from to get there?

Locations Are Tentative...
I was told on another site VFTT that the access road to the Summer trailhead is closed at the Stoney Creek Bridge...
http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?z=18&n=4894544&e=554517&s=100&size=l&datum=nad83&layer=DRG25
So parking will be someplace before it, that's all I know for now. This adds ~3.5 miles extra to hike in, fortunately on a road and not a rough trail.

You'll hike the road to here...
http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?z=18&n=4893731&e=559801&s=100&size=l&datum=nad83&layer=DRG25
Then take this other (logging?) road down to Calkin's Brook...
http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?z=18&n=4890044&e=559637&s=100&size=l&datum=nad83&layer=DRG25

I'll most likely hike to here on Thurs...
http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?z=18&n=4891651&e=566544&s=100&size=l&datum=nad83&layer=DRG25
or to another leanto upstream and hit Seymour on Fri morning then move camp to Calkin's Brook area later that day.

I still have lots of VFTT info to read to get a better feel for camp locations and terrain, so I'll post more info as I can.

I'll probably whip up a gear sled to pull my crap, as the relief of the access trails looks rather tame and there'll probably still be snow to pull it on.

Actually I Don't Know........But It Doesn't Matter
Nope! Well, kind of...maybe.

But in 5 min I'll be on my way up there, regardless.

Buddur - you could come with us to the North Fork Mountain Trail. We'll have winter conditions there and a decent group.
