Freezer bag cooking cozy.View MessagesViewing posts 1 to 37 of 37 messages posted.
“Hey Guys. I'm considering designing and making a Freezer bag cooking cozy. The minimum material purchase would allow me to make about fourteen. I would consider selling them for a few dollars $5.00 tops. Please throw any ideas at me. and let me know if there is any interest. I would use my ebay account (Jacks9) to distribute them. Thanks : )” 10:43:11 PM 3/01/05 Ding Ding Ding! “Hook me up.” 11:00:52 PM 3/01/05 “one old Army foam sleeping pad, sissors, duct tape = about 10 cozies see StoveStomper's site for what I use but you will need to change the dimensions for freezer bags - I use sandwich bags” 1:45:10 AM 3/02/05 “Thanks for the input. I planned on using a water heater jacket that has a felt like liner and foil without. It claims to reflect 97% of the heat radiated. Hey PS if everything goes well I'll have a couple to try out on this weekends trip.” 5:06:15 AM 3/02/05 “My fleece hat works really well for Enertia meals.” 6:38:55 AM 3/02/05 “I made one out of a cheap reflective autoshade. I wrap my baggie with my camp towel and put it all in the cozy. 15 minutes later, yum yum.” 8:44:47 AM 3/02/05 11:33:41 AM 3/02/05 “percious, but Jack is gonna sell them for $5 or less. Made of the same material they used. So I wouldn't save money by buying one from them for $8 + shipping. And that cozy is specifically for pots. Jack, I may be interested, once you have your final product and pricing ironed out. Keep us posted. I am usually using the quart sized bags per Sarbar's recipes, so if you are taking size suggestions, that's my vote. Maybe you could do different sizes.” 11:38:47 AM 3/02/05 “You can get a whole roll of reflectix for cheap at the hardware store. Make as many cozies and pads as you like.” 11:42:33 AM 3/02/05 “Or you can do like me and get Reflectix for free from the plant floor scraps.” 11:44:55 AM 3/02/05 “There you go. That works too.” 11:57:52 AM 3/02/05 “They will be the quart size and no more than $5.00” 2:42:59 PM 3/02/05 “How about just using one of those pot holders with a pocket? like this? http://www.instawares.com/Junior-Pan-Grabber-6-x-8-wPocket.BV845PG.0.7.htm ![]() I think it says it's about $2 each last edited: 3/02/05 3:19:04 PM” 3:18:05 PM 3/02/05 “$3 each with shipping... :-) I guess their regular price is about $4-$5 per holder.. (It comes in 1 dozen packages)” 3:21:48 PM 3/02/05 “I made the first test piece. It is 10" square with a 4" fold over flap. Ample room for a Quart sized bag (7"x 8"). I used velcro to hold the flap closed. My first test was a moderate sucess. Lipton noodle and sauce mix. Despite spilling half the boiling water onto the counter, and fighting to get the freezer bag zipped (Dont use cheapies) the noodles cooked in 25 minutes. I expect much better results once I eliminate the human error thing. I will be testing it this weekend on the WRT at Pine Creek Gorge.” 7:14:16 PM 3/02/05 “I made the first test piece. I like being able to eat and have coffe at the same time and have little mess.Plus It will save fuel using my Alcohol stove.” 10:02:02 PM 3/02/05 “I am not a fan of the alcohol stoves. Too much trouble, not enough heat.” 10:09:15 PM 3/02/05 “Unless you are using them in cold temps (<10F), what is the trouble you have had with alcohol stoves? Are you looking to cook large volumes, such as more than for two people?” 10:15:41 PM 3/02/05 “An alcohol stove is ok for heating two cups of water, but not as efficient as a gas stove. Beyond two cups of water an alcohol stove is a waste of time and effort.” 10:26:30 PM 3/02/05 “I have one of these for our cookpot and it works well with enertia meals and mountainhouse. I've had mine for two years and it's still in great shape. http://www.antigravitygear.com/products/cozys.html” 10:28:30 PM 3/02/05 “Most tests I have read show that alcohol stoves are more efficient than canister stoves for something like 5 to 7 days of hiking (alcohol's early advantage is the weight savings of the canisters). After that the canisters take over because of the greater BTU output. I almost never heat up more than three cups of water (and I have no problem doing this with my brasslite). 1-2 cups are either for rehydration or for simmering something. The other 1-2 cups are for tea or other hot drinks.” 10:42:17 PM 3/02/05 “We will heat up enough water for 2 enertia meals, and 2 hot drinks. We cook the enertias in the bag or if its a recipe of ours we'll pour off the hot drinks first and cook directly in the pot. With our pot cozy we save lots of fuel.” 10:49:52 PM 3/02/05 “Have you seen my cozy? It is bulky but man is it sweet, and it stands upright............ http://www.freewebs.com/freezerbagcooking/gearingredientslinks.htm Scroll down a bit to see the photos of it. My hiking buddy Marzsit made it for me.” 11:53:19 PM 3/02/05 “Thats how we use ours too Sarbar.” 12:07:45 AM 3/03/05 “It is a nifty little gadget :-) I love how little fuel I use nowdays (I use a Primus cansiter stove)....a can of fuel can go thru many trips now :-)and since all I do is boil water, I buy the cheap $3 a can fuel ;-)” 12:13:58 AM 3/03/05 “I was pleasantly surprised by how much fuel my cozy saves. last edited: 3/03/05 12:29:04 AM” 12:27:39 AM 3/03/05 “Hey Man, Put me in for One.” 5:04:23 PM 3/03/05 “I've actually used my insulated mug from Wally World as a cozy too. When I'm ready to eat, I just open the bag and fold the edges over the rim of the cup. But when I do this, I can't have my hot beverage at the same time. : ( Well at least not until my meal has rehydrated...” 5:10:35 PM 3/03/05 “I'll take one, jackstraw.” 5:24:27 PM 3/03/05 “I made my own, too. About a year ago I bought a car dash shade from Wal-Mart, cost me about $4. It's made from a very lightweight and strong metallic insulating material. I made Nalgene cozies (to keep water from freezing in the wintertime), 2 ziploc cozies, and a sit pad from it :)” 5:57:29 PM 3/03/05 “WOW! thanks for the response! I altered the Size to 9"x 10" I will be extensively testing In the sub freezing coolness of the WRT (Pine Creek Gorge)this weekend and will post results Monday. Have a Great weekend” 8:21:58 PM 3/03/05 WRT Test “Well I had a chance to test my FB cozy. Sat. morning saw sub 10 Degree weather I boiled water with my alcohol stove and mixed my grits in a Freezer bag and put it in the cozy. I then used the balance of the water to make coffee. When I took the grits out the were as hot as when I put them in.Hot Grits and hot coffee. No mess. Works for me.” 9:54:59 PM 3/06/05 Dude... “You forgot to give me one this weekend (Oops). Well, you're just going to have to come to North Fork Mountain now...” 10:17:44 PM 3/06/05 I love this photo of me.... “Rainrunner took it of me this weekend ;-) http://community.webshots.com/photo/289233097/289367522LkjTAp Shows my cozy just nicely ;-)” 10:32:18 PM 3/06/05 “You are an inspiration. Can I send you more recipes? I tried the Fudge Phantomsoul got from a recipe off your site this weekend. It was awesome!” 10:46:53 PM 3/06/05
