Stupid question on flying...

LOL! I just don't know this and have never really thought about it. Can you take aerosol spray cans in checked baggage? I guess there's no reason to think not...

Also, I can't remember (yes, I AM getting old), but am thinking the luggage area is not de-pressurized (if that's the right word), so that bottles of stuff might leak fluid if too full.

So much for dumb questions today, I HOPE!!! lol :-)

I've never seen a restriction on aerosol cans.

The airline should have a list or a link to a list of anything that is prohibited.

Short answer is NO

http://www.tsa.gov/interweb/assetlibrary/Permitted_Prohibited_12_18_2003.pdf

Scroll down the chart to pp5 "Flamable Items"

Put anything that might leak in a ziploc bag, because it will leak. Not necessarily because of pressure, just because of Murphy's law....

FAA has a link too, but manuka's link works better.

Actually the document linked to says that the answer is YES, you can take "Personal care or toiletries with aerosols, in limited quantities (such as hairsprays, deodorants)" in both carry on and checked luggage.

Check out their web site for information and limits.
Go To: Airlines Links."

Bring the restriction list when flying. Many screeners are confused and ask for a manager if the screener doesn't "agree" with the list.

I flew several times with my zippo in my checked baggage because I was misinformed about the requirements. It made it through every time but it is a prohibited checked item

i carry spray deoderant in carry on, and sometimes in my checked bags...never any problems, and i checked with the tix counter i think they said under 16oz is fine in or out of the cabin

Well Bison it also says you can carry on -
-Nail files
-corkscrews
-knitting needles
-up to 2 lighters

Also note that the personal items does list aerosols as being OK, but a sub note at the bottom says "some personal caret items containing aerosol are regulated as hazardous materials".

Give it a try Bison, but be prepared to miss the flight.

I will still stand by my short answer.
You want to catch that flight, leave the aerosol at home.

Also Liz, not a stupid question.

apart from missing a flight potential penalties in range $250 - $1,500 although seldom imposed unless there was a deliberate attempt to mislead or hide the stuff.

Is lizs taking her cans of Aquanet on hiking trips again?

The frieght compartment is pressurized, same as the passenger compartment. Most modern jets give you a pressure that is equal to what you feel at 8,000 ft. when you are at full flight level (35,000 ft.). Most things leak because of this lower pressure.

That doesn't make any sense BM why would they have a problem with a turban? Half the screeners wear turbans...

Well, I did have the cheap thrill of the full pat-down last year once. Oooooooohhhh, gives me cheap chills just thinking about it. LOL!

Naaah, it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected. But now I understand they've let up a bit on that? So I can not only bring my full barrage (sp?) of nail files and clippers, but my explosive-lined underwire bra, too?

LMFAO! :-)

Never joke with any airport official, customs officer or immigration officer. It's just not worth it. Laugh at his or her jokes, nothing more.

lizs, you just have to leave the bear spray in the luggage that goes in the luggage area of the plane. I guess you must use Polar Bear spray in cold minnie a polis:)

My husband is a Northwest pilot and thinks you probably won't have an issue. He says it really depends on what exactly the item is and who is looking at the bags.

Bear spray has to be 4 oz. or less, or you can't take it in your checked luggage either. I think most bear spray cannisters are much larger than that aren't they?

hobbit, I can't find my bear spray, but I think it is about 4 oz. It's very small. Do you know the reason why it would be limited to 4 oz?

Hypothetical: you get in your car in Michigan headed to Florida, unbeknownst to you a fly, gets in the car with you ...you stop for gas in Georgia and the fly exits the vehicle....question is...Does the fly know where it is? Does he care? Does he want to go home? How many things has he #&%!$ on in your car? Random thoughts.
