You could say what ballet dancers say, which is "merde". It's considered unlucky in the dancing world to say "break a leg".

Congrats.

Be very careful about the insurance. For that big a price difference there is probably and equally difference in service/coverage.

$165/month sounds like bare bones major medical only.

$812/month is about right for a family coverage with prespriptions in this area. I think my family coverage is $840/month.
dayhiker

I only pay $140.00 now but you are right, i need to look into more.
mapleleaf

If they're doing $812 a month for personal full coverage then that sounds high, but I don't live in NY. It sounds about correct for family coverage. $140/month for family doesn't sound like full coverage.

Just trying to pass along a warning and nothing more. I'm certainly not trying to get in your business.

thank you for the heads up,
but that would mean I would pay almost $10.000 a year instead of $1680.00 i pay now
big difference! changing jobs would not be worth it then.

Some folks change jobs just for the better insurance. Their HR folks should be able to give you info about the coverage and the deductibles. You can compare that to what you have now. From what you previously described the new job would be worth it for even pay. You might net out a better job, better insurance, and the same pay. Only you can decide if that works, but it's definitely something to consider.

I'm really not trying to rain on your parade and probably should have emailed all this. The numbers just looked funny. Engineers can be a pain about numbers not looking right, because they usually mean something.

I checked into this a bit, DH. The plan Maple speaks of is not as extensive as I would like it to be. But, it actually may be workable. Unfortunately, we can't realistically go with the numbers the new company presents as premiums. It would just be a monthly "robbing peter to pay Paul" situation. I am doing some comparison shopping on the more moderately priced plans and seeking the best and most workable plan to move ahead with. Unfortunately, there are a lot of folks like us out there who are backed into a corner and must choose between options that may not be ideal to us. I accept this as a fact of life, due to how f_cked up the medical system is in this country. Maybe it wil be addressed one of these days. But, all that's going on now is a lot of finger pointing as to who's responsible for the obscene prices out there and virtually nothing of substance as to how to fix it. Until that day comes, our hands are tied and we must work within whatever is out there...

Good, just wanted to call attention to it. mapes that email yesterday was from my work account if it looked funny.

2 places you might look are chambers of commerce and also trade groups. Both of these attempt to get enough members in an insurance pool to be considered a "group" for purchasing power. TB - You're a paralegal or something similar? There is probably a Paralegals Profesionals of America or something similar. They probably offer family coverage for members. Just throwing stuff out that I've run into. If I'm crossing a line tell me to shut the heck up.

Not at all, DH. I'm not the type that shuts out good folks that are trying to help me. On the contrary, I appreciate it. Please don't think that I don't. I have jotted down what you suggested and will look into that immediately. Thank you. I will let you know how I make out...

Just making sure. This is sort of personal type of stuff and now some loudmouth has is throwing info at you.

We swapped insurance a few years ago at work and had to jump through all these same hoops. We're a very small outfit and had to investigate different things because of our size. When my partner was a sole proprieter he had to get his through a professional society for the very reason that you're having difficulty.

On a recent ER visit I came back really baffled by just how screwed up things are. I don't think socialized medicine is the answer based on what your read from other countries, but it's messed up for sure. I've never talked to that partner I mentioned about it though. I should. He's on the Board of a large hospital group in the B'ham area.
