Perhaps it will be different... perhaps not. This is an exact one-year anniversary of our first trip. Come one, come all. Meet new friends! And remember, lizs is also known as Trip Hostess Supreme. :-)” 10:26:54 PM 3/02/05 Hi lizs “Been waiting for you to post this trip I'll be sure to come along hope the weather will be nice. If not guess I'll be prepared for it. What time does the hiking start on 4/1 last edited: 3/02/05 10:35:48 PM” 10:32:17 PM 3/02/05 “LOL... ya know, I was thinking of skipping organizing this trip. Then a guy on the "other side" said he was probably gonna go there that weekend. And if he goes, he would go no matter the weather. I'm like you, jrohner78... this will make me go, bad weather or not. LOL Probably all a "sign," ya know. So here we are. Say, have you seen the Upper Iowa Canoe trip posted in early June? :-)” 10:43:28 PM 3/02/05 “Oh, it starts whatever time you can get there. Some people have gotten there as late as 11 p.m. or midnight. And when it was a full moon, they didn't even need their headlamps for the hike. I plan an easy hike to the first night's campground. If it's Heffern Hill, which we've used both times in the past, the trail is something like 1-2 miles, an old RR bed trail with a little stream crossing. And you can actually drive to within .25 of the campground, if a person is tired from the drive. Or... I have thought of using a different campground. Will need to see. What say the public? Brown's Hollow on the first night and perhaps somewhere different for Sat. night? Also, there's a good uphill trail of around 1 mile at most to Camp Glen Wendell, starting at the A-frame by the main parking lot, but there's only probably one flat spot. lol... although there is some "illegal" camping that could be done in pines real close. ;-) As far as arriving, some people have stayed over the night before. A lot arrive between 3 and 7 p.m. on Friday, it seems. :-)” 10:55:34 PM 3/02/05 “Lizs I saw the canoe trip but since I'm going to Glacier, West Virgina, and Now Yellow River My vacation is starting to hit rock bottom and I don't have a "normal" meaning now backpacking, trip planed with the GF yet. Its good to see I can arrive a bit later so I don't have to burn so much vacation. Lizs where is a good spot to get trail maps so I can reference what campgrounds your talking about.” 11:47:34 PM 3/02/05 “Thought you were going back to 'Nam for a reunion visit. :o)” 1:02:52 AM 3/03/05 “LOL, stanlee There are a bunch of trail maps online here. http://www.iowadnr.com/forestry/yellowriver.html In the past we've parked at the "P" and hiked to Heffern Hill. Also, I have mapping software and can plot out the trip, which I've done in the past. Others hike up to Camp John Schultz, although I don't think it would be a good night hike, cuz it's a bit of a rocky, steep trail. As I said, we could hike to Camp Glen Wendell. It's uphill, but a very nice trail, in essence a grassy old road. However, there's only one level spot, basically, around the campfire area. Brown's Hollow could be a nice, longer hike through the woods for people arriving early; a nice night hike on the forest road for those arriving later; OR those arriving later could choose to drive the forest road (not busy at all), and park within .5 mile of camp and hike in. Hmmmm... might not be bad. Also, I just had an idea that I think there's a group campsite at the end of the car-camping Little Paint Creek campground. Might be nice... Could do a little exploration up the stream valley to the north...... But it would basically be driving in and setting up, and there would be a camping fee there. Decisions... decisions!! last edited: 3/03/05 9:08:26 AM” 9:03:28 AM 3/03/05 “I thought for sure you were going to plan this trip on the 15-17 weekend :P.” 9:05:51 AM 3/03/05 “LMAO, Simer. ;-P Ya comin'?” 9:09:25 AM 3/03/05 “maybe...” 9:12:52 AM 3/03/05 “You need to get out of COLD and SNOW for awhile, lol... Heck, there probably won't be snow and, in fact, wildflowers could well be popping up. :-)” 9:17:13 AM 3/03/05 “Just let me know the route and I'll be there.... maybe later but I'll be there. You have know idea how glad I am to see this trip. I'm programming CNC machines right now sitting at my computer longing to be hiking.” 10:24:11 AM 3/03/05 “I'm a strong maybe, gotta see about a ride” 12:24:39 PM 3/03/05 “Hey, Lizs. I posted on BP too, but I REALLY want to go on this trip. It would be my first time out and I would still have to get some gear and my parents permission (I'm only 15). But I would love to go!” 2:54:31 PM 3/03/05 “Big Red - be careful, they'll make you bring the beer!” 4:22:57 PM 3/03/05 “Why is it called the Yellow River? Did pennsy visit it? ;-)” 4:25:13 PM 3/03/05 “LMAO! Nimblefoot that is funny. You didn't see my full explanation to Big Red on "the other side."” 4:26:48 PM 3/03/05 “AHA SPALPEEN!! Say something twice... for once I catch it... I put two and two together... and this time it added up! >8-) LOL!” 4:32:41 PM 3/03/05 Thanks for the invite Lizs “I will join the group as well. I have equipment for any weather. I will keep an I on this message board from now on. Chuck” 11:40:33 AM 3/04/05 “Hey Lizs last time I caught something they gave me a shot” 1:11:19 PM 3/04/05 “Whew, I am sure glad you got a shot for it!! LOL! OK, I've got a tentative route planned, which is different from what we've hiked before, mixing the trails up a little bit differently. I will provide more information by e-mails. If you're going on the trip, get me your e-mail to get on the list. NOWSLIMMER, THAT MEANS **YOU!!!** hahahaha... ROUTES Friday 1. Fill up on any needed water at the "A-frame" information building. Go back onto pavement and immediately past that is a righthand turn you'll make. Park there. It's the forest headquarters/backpacker's parking lot. 2. I will have a number of routes to the first campsite, depending on what time you arrive and whether it's dark or light out. The hike could be anywhere from around 1 mile to around 2 miles. Saturday Mileage will be around 5 with options for more by changing the route for a scenic overlook, to go over a nasty hill on an unofficial trail and/or a hike after tents are set up. Sunday Mileage will be around 4, with options for less if someone wants to leave early. Will include some nice views.” 6:27:10 PM 3/04/05 For Lizs only! “Thanks, Lizs. This one is for you. I'm planning to do some serious hiking on a "private trip." This trip, which I've organized, is so secret that even I don't have the details, yet. However, I will be at Grinnell before May 23rd. I may have an opportunity to visit with you around that time.” 6:46:42 AM 3/05/05 “so lizs what is the nearest airport to fly into? also what is the weather like that time of year?” 9:56:43 AM 3/06/05 10:32:29 AM 3/06/05 “Maybe right now - will update this week :)” 8:56:54 PM 3/06/05 “mountainrunner, send me your e-mail and I can get you more LOTS more information than on the trip page. lisapbia at yahoo dot com :-)” 9:06:57 PM 3/06/05 ““Sorry, Lizs. Last night, Saturday night, a live-it-up night, we could have hit all the best places in town and some of the good spots, too. We could have danced up a storm and done a little hugging on your doorstep. Instead, we both knocked ourselves out on our computers, 1,750 miles apart. Yep, I had nice thoughts about you when I saw your keystrokes appear on the screen. I even looked at you on Phil's Photo Page. You sure looked real good in the previous Century. Some updates from this Century are needed!” 9:54:22 PM 3/06/05 A newbie “I am pretty much a rookie although my older son and I have done a 50 miler with the scouts on the River to River trail. Now my youngest wants to get involved. Is this trip something my 10 y.o. son would be able to walk? I probably would carry everything in my pack.” 12:30:04 PM 3/09/05 “Lizs, I'm a strong maybe?-I have some prior commitments I'm trying to get out of-but feeling quilty about it?! Want to really go hiking though-so am working on it! Need to get advanturous and deal with the weather whatever it might me-should be a FUN TRIP! I was considering the BWCA trip in April but decided not to go that far north at that time of year(call me a wimp)-but here in Iowa I have a little better perspective on what the weather might me-MAYBE, YOU KNOW IT IS IOWA???” 11:18:04 AM 3/12/05 “I do believe I'll make this trip.” 9:59:45 AM 3/14/05 “I'm in” 12:52:11 PM 3/14/05 “Still looking at this.” 12:53:42 PM 3/14/05 Newbie w/ son “I am pretty much a rookie although my older son and I have done a 50 miler with the scouts on the River to River trail. Lizs is the most familiar with the area, but I think she's out of the office still - slacker!!! :)” 2:08:50 PM 3/14/05 “rmeugene, write me at: lisapbia at yahoo dot com beerwench, C'MON!!!! Hey, I am no fan of cold weather either, but I will -- by the fact it's my trip -- BE THERE. So ya might as well come. If it's really, truly awful weather, these TT trips seem to evolve into a party in a motel room. Now... don't ask me where I got that idea... but it HAS happened. (Nope, I wasn't there) TMac... uno or dos? ;-) BTW, I will have a trip report and photos... maybe yet today... more likely tonight. 70-degree weather RULES!!! MOOOOOOOhahhahaaha!!” 10:39:16 AM 3/15/05 “lizs: uno :) Gotta take baby steps with a non-camper.” 10:59:49 AM 3/15/05 “Shining Rocks, NC. Cold and windy. Some took a dayhike, some headed for breakfast at Pisgah Inn. Rendevous later. Upon rendevous, my group (the breakfast club) announced the purchase of a nights stay at a cabin in the valley. We dubbed it the Cold Mountain Approach Shelter. Seven of us (plus Sarabelle) stayed there that night, a couple bailed. It was fun.” 11:08:42 AM 3/15/05 “Ahem.. Mr. gojo you must have missed the VIDEO from a recent trip to Red River Gorge or somewhere. LOL!” 12:21:11 PM 3/15/05 “Yea gojo, Gemini was jumping up and down on a bed in her underwear, AND (not in video) she slept with TownDawg! Not kidding. Must see, video. ;-)” 12:26:20 PM 3/15/05 “I would like to go on this trip! I have been iving in NE the past several months while working a temporary job, and will still be around the weekend of this trip. I have my gear with me! Mooooooohahahahahaha yourself, award-winning co-star of the aforementioned "jumping" video. LOL!” 11:39:31 PM 3/15/05 “And they have not yet heard of the ritualistic ceremony of ranch dressing and plastic. May we expect you there, Mr. Righthand Ritualistic Ceremony Guy?” 11:41:46 PM 3/15/05 “moomoomoomooomoomoomooo cow on speed?
