?????
I just got an offer for delorme topo usa 5.0. I was looking into getting mapsource topo for my garmin legend. Has anyone ever used it or know anything about it? Is it worth the 69.95 they are asking?

Delorme TOPO USA 5.0 Western Region $49.95

HOw many Regions do they have? Sounds to me like they might nickel and dime you to death!

I have an early version of DeLorme. and it sucks.
But that's for the computer not GPS.

I think it was the lower 48 but am not sure. It was regularly 99.95 but had a 30 dollars off thing going. My wife through away my info so I guess it doesn't matter much anymore.

Forget delorme unless all you want to do is road stuff. It's not that it is useless but it has a lot to go when compared to others.

You can get the Delorme West Region or East Region Topo 5.0 at www.buy.com for $33.21.

Sticks, what are the "others" that are better?

The DeLorme Topos are not nearly as accurate as Map Tech Terrain Navigator or National Geographic TOPO. DeLorme may have updated roads, but the terrain features are lacking.
I have examples of different map programs here.

Perhaps the best is NG TOPO

Because they use real USGS 7.5 min maps, they will cost considerably more then Topo USA 5 for the same coverage. DeLorme does have a Topo that uses 7.5 min maps, but it costs much more and the interface is not nearly as easy to use.

Note that none of these map programs will download maps into your Garmin.

I use DeLorme Topo USA 5.0 at work to make some of my maps but I don't use it to plan my hiking and backpacking trips. I like National Geographic's TOPO software much better than the DeLorme.

You can go to the Delorme site and check out their web boards and see what people are saying. I got a thing in the mail for this program and wondered who sold my address and if everyone else was getting them too.

I was thinking it was from my Backpacker subscription.

So is Map Source the only one that will work with my Garmin?

I’d check with the Garmin web site for compatibility. The gps companies are very proprietary when it comes to software.

TopoFusion also works with Garmin units. Check them out at www.topofusion.com. I'm thinking about buying the software when I trade my Cobra GPS in for a Garmin.
