Stove
Hi.

I'm planning to hike AT from VA to GA in summer. I have found Coleman's moderate propane stove at home. I tried and it works with Coleman's tank (pretty high).

Are the order propane tanks (MSR, ...) compactible? If not, are there places around trail where I could buy this Coleman's particular tank? (I know that they have them in Walmart but I didn't see them in BassPro).

I'm actually making my mind whether to take this propane or go for little solid fuel stove.

Again... how is it with resuppling with solid tablets?

Thank you for any hints.

I don't know about the solid fuel, but the small MSR, etc type are easy enough to find.

Hello, Crash Bang!!!!!

Crash Bang did the whole trail last year.

Use an alcohol stove

Alcohol?
Well, I wouldn't mind to try alcohol.

Actually I'm verry limited with money.
Is this cheapest way?

What would be average lasting time of one quart of alcohol in moderate conditions?

Thank you

You can make an alcohol stove VERY cheap - with a pepsi can or with cat food cans - there's lots of info on this board.

Fuel usage will vary depending on what your doing - if you only boil water to rehydrate food with a quart would last a long time.

Great.

I've found bunch of can stoves. Cat Stove looks pretty reasonable.

But I can't find any actual alcohol fuel on the web.

Any hint.

look in the paint department of WalMart or any hardware store for denatured alcohol aka shellac thinner

alternatively stop at the autoparts isle and pick up Heet gasline defreezer in the yellow bottle - fairly pure methanol - works fine for alcohol stoves.

You can get denatured alcohol at any hardware store in the paint section.

My stoves are inexpensive. Saves you the trouble of making them. When you look at what it would cost you out of pocket to make the same thing, you are better off buying one of mine... Also, you can check on eBay for the same thing, there are several retailers.

Holy crap, I need to start charging for them.

alcohol is so cheap reliable and easy to use I won't be going back to cannisters any time soon. it's best just for boiling water. If you want more control, then look at the trangia mini, or 28 something or other it's called here. It takes a little longer to boil than cannisters, but really, does that couple of minutes matter when you've set up camp in the wilderness.

yeah yeah Stovey ;o). I have cat can stoves, but I prefer the Trangia, certainly for longer trips as it offers some way to control the flame, so you can actually cook on it too, rather than boiling water. Something which is useful when doing a long hike.

"Hey, percious, isn't your shield to fragile to hold pot? Is it good idea to store inside of pot while hiking?”

Nope, the stand is strong enough for > 2 liters of water. And it is convenient to put it in your pot while hiking, but the material is durable enough that you do not have to, and it breaks down into 2 parts.

A simmer control can be easyly made for any 'pepsi' stove. I just never bother. I never simmer.

“$16 plus $5 shipping for an alcohol pepsi stove and windshield????
Holy crap, I need to start charging for them.

If you are making just one stove, it is cheaper just to buy one. Here is a breakout of my costs:

Materials:
JB Weld........$5.00
Aluminum Tape..$5.00 (for the smallest roll)
Aluminum Duct..$2.00
Aluminum Screws$2.50 (100 ct)
Cans...........$0.10

Tools:
Metal Cutters...$19.00
Small Drill Bit.$15.00 (you have to buy a whole set)
Pin Vice........$10.00 (to hold drill bit)
Dremel or other.$50.00
Metal Crimpers..$24.00 (for priming cup)
Razor Blades....$ 2.00
Sharpie.........$ 1.00

So, just in materials, you are looking at $14.50. Of course if you make a few stoves you can more than make up the cost, but when you look at all the specialized tools I use to make the stoves the cost starts to add up.

To be honest, I make <$10 per hour making the stoves. If you count the time and energy I put into the website and eBay, I'm maybe making $5.00 per hour. I really just make the stuff because I think it is cool to be part of the hiking community, and I enjoy working with my hands.

So, StoveStomper, I encourage you to sell your wares. You and I have lots of competition, besides each other. Selling your own goods is very rewarding. When people send you emails back about how much they enjoy using the things you make by hand, it just makes you smile.

Go for the pepsi can stove, basic design. It's bullet proof, and with a little practice, you can build them all day for next to nothing. Most people have the tools necessary just lying around the house.

No kidding they are easy. I build them at my desk at work over lunch. Biggest problem I have is not quite getting the lengths of the can sides and the inner wall right, and when I shove it together, one of the pieces splits. Oh, and you have to be careful when you cut the cans because the edges are really sharp!

Oh #&%!$! I just cut the hell out of myself! There's blood everywhere! Dammit! My favorite fleece. I think this is going to take more than a Bandaid. Crap. Now it's on the keyboard. I feel kinda light headed. Wow. Look at all the preeetttty coolllorrss.....

No but you can make a similar one yourself with a couple of soda cans. I'd do that before buying an alcohol stove.

I think Stovestomper has plans for how to build an alky stove on his site.

I just put five stoves in the trunk of the car. I'm headed to the trails in GSMNP. Number one of these is a soda can stove. In rated order(10 top) here's what I prefer for trail cooking:

  • 10. Campfire
  • 9. soda can stove
  • 8. Sierra Zip Stove (burns wood, cones, etc.)
  • 6. Sterno
  • 5. Coleman 1-burner stove using white gas (rated for trail use, used mainly in developed campgrounds)
  • 2. Esbit (only until I finish using the fuel tablets, they're too expensive)

Jerbear,

brother told me, that I get another mini package from some red-neck in his house. I guess it's from you - your stove.

Thank you very much.

PS: Does it turn red when you use it? ;-)
Sivek

Sivek,
Um, no it doesn't turn red. Aluminum is pretty heat-resistant, unlike steel which does turn red when heated with fuel like White Gas. Make sure you are only using Denatured Alcohol with it.

Enjoy!

the can never gets hotter than the boiling point of alcohol for obvious reasons - I know of one guy that uses a foil muffin cup to form a stove with no problem
