Dahhh, on my part. I was in my state of over-preparedness. Good habits are hard to break.

I purchased a 16 oz platypus last night that will soley be my Alcohol bladder. CP, I went to REI last night, and they only had high gators in my size. Got any extras? I wear a size 13 boot.

Was she peeking again? ;o)

Ok.. dis da plan?
I'll meet up with that dickwad schmuck ENS and some of his cronies between 6-6:30 at the Doyle. We leave a car (or 2) there and head down to the Benhisel Bridge where we'll meet that bonehead, Crazypace.

ENS - even though I don't give a rats patuti about you, pennsy me, artex, or the rest of the boneheads that rotate in your little society, this should still be fun.

sounds like a good plan, except for the part about meeting that dickwad schmuck guy.

I'm not driving so I should be able to get there on time this time. I'm leaving right after work, which is 440 and Duncannon is about 40 miles away, so I should be there before 6.

Ox, I was just thinking, it will quicker and easier for you to meet at the Doyle Hotel instead of driving into harrisburg on the turnpike and then driving down to york and then all the way back up to harrisburg to the trailhead. Plus then we can leave two cars at the end as opposed to one car.

Here is the address for a mapquest search:
THE DOYLE HOTEL
7 North Market St.
Duncannon, Pa 17020
(717)834-6789

picture of the Doyle.

Basically, get on the turnpike and head west. Get off on the eastern exit for Harrisburg and head north on 283, continue on 283 north for 2 miles and get on I-83 north towards 81. (same way you go to State College). Get on I-81 south for 2 miles and then get off on 322 west towards state college. stay on 322 for about 7 miles and cross the Sesquehanna River, right after you cross the river you turn left into Duncannon. Sray on Market Street while driving through Duncannon. It is 4-5 blocks (guess) and the Doyle will be on your right.

Hey CP - sure, I'll buy the first round. The Doyle HAS to be cheaper than Shnitzels, eh?

I have a feeling the Doyle will be very cheap. Rooms there are like $15 a night.

How much were those beers at Schnitzels?

Thems were good beers.. immmmm hmmmmmmm (sling blade voice)

If I leave work before 5, I should be able to get to the Doyle by 6:30. I will try like hell. If I cant, I call you on the cell and just meet you at the trailhead.

Hey, I might have to leave asap on saturday.
So, I really need to park my truck at the finish. I'll explain tonight. This way, I can just bolt (at my crazy-pace) if I need to without having to be shuttled back to the trail head. I will leave work by 4:00 - so I should be there by 6:00.

if we see rain, I think we will see it tonight. Looks like only a 30% chance though, so we may avoid it. Looks like the rain won't come tomorrow until 3ish. I think if we can get a 7am start we could be done by 1ish and beat the 90 degree temps.

tonights low will only get to about 78 degs.
with humidity, will feel like over 80!
I should of just brought a fleece blanket, instead of a sleeping bag. Do you know if there is cover (tree's) until we hit the mountain ? I kinda remember reading that it was all open field.

I think I hiked some of the stretch we're going to do tonight and that there is a some tree cover along the creek, other than that I am not sure. The sun should be dropping down by the time we start hiking though. Looks like the valley section tomorrow between Blue Mtn and Cove Mtn is wooded.

Here is a link to the pics from this past trip on the AT. They start on the first page and end on the second page.

We started hiking from the Scott Farm Trail Work Center next to the Bernhisel Bridge and camped friday night near the Darlington Shelter. Saturday we got up, Crazypace and Pennsy left first, since CP had to get out early, and Ox, Heath and myself followed shortly there after. We finished up at the famous Doyle Hotel in Duncannon, PA, on the Sesquehanna River.

The weather was extremily hot and humid. The skinks (small lizard) were out in force. The trail was rocky, but tame compared to what lies ahead further northeast on the trail. The heat index was 110 degrees. It was insane. We took out time and still made decent time.

The spaghetti at the Doyle was some of the best spaghetti I ever had and for the price, unbeatible. We all enjoyed our food.

It was a good time!

The next chapter of the PA AT hkies continues on Sunday August 27th.

Crazypace and I will be hiking from Hawk Mountain Rd to PA 309. If it is hot we will start at 309 and hike to Hawk Mountain Rd. due to the steep climb from Hawk Mountain Rd to Tri-County Point.

Tri-County Point will be the highlight of the day. It is also one of the highest points on the AT in PA. Overall it will be an 11 mile dayhike. Should be a good time. All are welcome to attend.

See ya there!

Good TR ENS, great pics. Looking forward to the Sunday report and pics.

I'm set to hike Hawk Mtn Rd - 191 the 26th-28th with out of state section hiker friends or I'd join you for Sunday. If they cancel I'll be there.

How much AT do you have left?
spindlette
7:48:09 AM
8/17/05

I still have from:
Hawk Mtn rd to 309 (11 miles)
Wind Gap to DWG (not sure how many miles, guessing around 20)
645 to 183 (11 miles)
Shippensburg Rd to Bernhisel Bridge (around 30 miles)

So I guess I still have about 70 miles of trail left.

Is that 70 miles of the entire trail, or just in PA? If its just PA, once you finish PA you just need to move to a new state and start working on that one. You like to move, right?

awesome Calmwater, it would be cool to meet you.

That's a good idea about full packing it, I may do that too. Get a good work out for the BFT. I think the stretch we're doing is going to be relitively flat, except for the long down hill to Hawk Mtn Road.

I'm going to do that too.

We finished another section of the AT this weekend. Crazypace, Calmwater3 and myself met at Hawk Mtn Road in Berks County, PA (near Hawk Mtn sanctuary) and shuttled to 309.

It was pouring down rain and muggy for most of the hike. The views were socked in the entire way. The was some nice scenery and rock formations along the way. It was a bummer to not have had a view at Dan's Pulpit.

I didn't take any pictures due to the weather.

I took a bunch of pics, had a really cool looking one of CrazyPace at the pulpit with the mist in the backround, but unfortunetely I lost my camera. I think I left it sitting on top of the car when we left. Oh well, I guess its time to get a new camera.

That sucks ! I'll go back on my way home to see if I can find it. Since it was sunday and rainy, I doubt anybody else would of been up there. I lost my wedding ring and found it a week later on a trail. Mabey my luck will hold out for your camera.
