List Your Personal Backpacking Website H ereView MessagesWhatch u' got? “I'm having a blast tweaking my website, and would like to see everyone elses. I thought it'd be cool to have a thread where eveyone can list theirs. Post a link to your site here! If you're thinking of building one, I highly recommend it. It's easy. The primary reason I built mine was for my family and friends to read about my trips and see the pics, but I hope it's a good resource for other backpackers as well. It's worked out very well so far. www.jamieofthenorth.com What's yours, dammit? last edited: 3/08/05 3:53:44 PM” 3:53:21 PM 3/08/05 “I actually started working on one a few months ago, but never got around to doing much more than some story boarding the layout.” 3:55:16 PM 3/08/05 “me too - working on it” 3:55:55 PM 3/08/05 3:56:07 PM 3/08/05 “i sense a violin link just waiting to happen” 3:57:13 PM 3/08/05 “WOW Artex!! Looking good, eh. sooo much better than what you had a couple of weeks ago. You've spent some time on it.” 4:04:37 PM 3/08/05 “Same as it's ever been. I'm really surprised the damn thing hasn't died of malnutrition yet. http://www.Dirtbagsdeluxe.natureavenue.com last edited: 3/08/05 4:07:36 PM” 4:07:02 PM 3/08/05 “www.calipidder.com I just added photos from a trip to Lassen NP last weekend with a bunch of the regulars from TT. last edited: 3/08/05 4:11:35 PM” 4:11:16 PM 3/08/05 “Keep'em coming! I like the easy-to-read format of your trip report section, calipidder. Thanks, goat... constructive criticsm from you and others helped make it better, so thanks! :-)” 4:17:02 PM 3/08/05 “I'm disappointed you don't have anything about running on there, dude! ;-)” 4:51:34 PM 3/08/05 “Ok here it is.....for what it's worth :) One of these days I might actually have time to work on it again!! www.midwesthiker.com” 5:10:00 PM 3/08/05 “I've got some ideas for one -- one that would have trip reports (in the style of a journal maybe), pictures, gear reviews, and some other thoughts and rambles. I'm still researching what kind of technologies I'd like to use. I'd like to implement some sort of content manager (CMS) for it to make it easy to upload pictures and reports (a la this site). I'd also like it animations for events, etc., etc. So far, I've looked into Flash, and Javascript. Flash looks expensive to acquire and I don't know how to do a single thing with it, and while I'm familiar with javascript and it's very stable, it's also slower than most other technologies. Havent' looked too much into php yet. What technologies run all y'all's websites, and why did you choose them over others?” 6:47:49 PM 3/08/05 “don't have one yet.. but I'm taking a web design class with Thinkbubelz.. Hopefully, I can get one and running by the end of this semester! :-)” 7:04:31 PM 3/08/05 “I have Dreamweaver. but have not a clue what to do with it.. :-) Gotta sit down with the manual and just play with it! But, in my web design class, we aren't allowed to use any of the fancy software, so I'm just learning the basics of HTML right now!” 7:06:13 PM 3/08/05 “PhantomnSoul - I primarily used Frontpage. I have some javascript in there to create certain effects (for example, check out the "Quest for Snow" trip report). I created the navigation bar with a program called Xara. With Frontpage, you just use Dynamic HTML settings to create the "rollover" effect, where the menu options change when the mouse hovers over. That may sound like a lot of mumbo jumbo, but the truth of the matter is it's really simple to do. Like anything computer-related, it just takes patience and a lot of messing around with stuff. I'd recommend considering building something somewhat basic, and just work your way up from there.” 7:42:55 PM 3/08/05 So Far We Got “Artex: www.jamieofthenorth.com Nigal: http://www.Dirtbagsdeluxe.natureavenue.com Callipidder: www.calipidder.com UPLuver: www.midwesthiker.com” 7:54:55 PM 3/08/05 “one of these days, I'll have my site up. Artex, I loved the video on your site.” 8:09:56 PM 3/08/05 “I need one, but I don't know were to start.Or what I need to start.” 8:13:31 PM 3/08/05 “I have a blog page, but it also has other crap on it, so I don't want to post the link, at least not until I have it on a regular site.” 8:16:12 PM 3/08/05 here ya go... 8:33:53 PM 3/08/05 “Flatlander Matt - Frontpage and Dreamweaver are two popular programs. Both are real easy to use, though I'm more experienced with Frontpage. It's just a couple steps above using Microsoft Word. Very easy to use. Thanks Gemini! :-) last edited: 3/08/05 8:35:31 PM” 8:34:45 PM 3/08/05 “Nice, Toph! Very extensive gallery. Sweet! BTW, check out this dude's backpacking website. He posts on VFTT. The other thing I'll say about my site, is that is you don't have a fairly quick connect, and 1024 x 768 resolution you are gonna hate me. Yo PhantomSoul.. I run DreamWeaver so putting Java and php and asp would be easy.. but the free anycities site is for static pages.. So I have to leave it at what you can do with standard HTML. I've got some rollover images in there, and I like my pulldown menus, but (without java or some sort of server-side technology) I can't do the mouseover popups I wanan do. last edited: 3/09/05 6:37:01 AM” 6:32:06 AM 3/09/05 “Nice sites! I'm impressed, and I'll have to spend some time browsing. Yours doesn't seem to allow that. It that intentional? Most blogs also have a link for "contact me" or something like that. Not for you? Noce photos!!!” 12:12:19 PM 3/09/05 “I hate to toss mine out there cause I can't seem to make time to finish or update it. It's one of those cobblers son has no shoes and the web developer has no site kinda things. www.humanpackmule.com I probably have six different versions in a few different languages (ASP, CFM ect.) on my server but none of them beond conceptual stages. One of these days...” 12:20:48 PM 3/09/05 “humanpackmule: Nice photos of Lauren, who's the old guy?” 12:27:44 PM 3/09/05 “Thanks, her Grandfather. He said Dreamweaver was by far superior to FrontPage and he's sending me up a copy so I can check it out. I'm looking forward to it.” 6:21:52 PM 3/09/05 “As a FrontPage user, anything is far superior than FrontPage. I have a copy of Dreamweaver and GoLive. I'd like to switch over to GoLive because I use Adobe's Photoshop too, but I haven't taken the first step to try and learn the software. Also since my site is fairly large, I'm a bit overwhelmed by the project.” 7:54:42 PM 3/09/05 “Dreamweaver is professional level software. Most of us who do this for a living develop graphics in Photoshop and code in Dreamweaver. I've used a bunch of other tools and by far that's the most powerful combo. Mike, do some reading up on Dreamweaver templates. It is possible to apply a template to an existing page. There will be some clean up but using templates will keep you from having to recode everything by hand.” 8:29:01 PM 3/09/05 “Thanks HPM! Can't GoLive do that too? I'm not partial to either one, but I am getting tired of the bugs in FrontPage 2000.” 1:04:41 PM 3/10/05 1:18:11 PM 3/10/05 1:20:16 PM 3/10/05 “I use Dreamweaver MX. Fast, and easy to code if you have to. I really don't like GoLive too much, and hmm lets not talk about FrontPage. I really didnt' work with GoLive enought to say that it's not a good program though...so don't listen to me. I love PhotoShop, but I don't need GoLive in order to design the graphics with Photoshop.” 1:32:23 PM 3/10/05
