I ws watching tv earlier and saw a fight between a bobcat and a rattlesnake. The cat won handily, then left the snake to rot. Didn't even eat it.

There used to be big cats in TN, but they were all killed off back 100 years ago or so, along with the wolves and many of the bears. Hence the overpopulation of deer now.

I nearly stepped on a rattler last september in Savage Gulf. Up on a ridge trail he was sunning himslef. He looked fat and had probably just eating for the winter so he was very docile. Even came close to us to get a better sniff. Really cool animals. The bees we encountered half an hour before were not as forgving. Oh that sucked. They got IN my socks!!! I had to squash them with a big rock in my socks...which of course just sent out a pheramone (sp?) to all the others to attack my legs. Bollocks!

Very Cool! Pretty surprising that you were able to get a picture of it in repose.

Now, try and find a mountain lion in the wild. I've seen many bobcats in the California wildlands (usually quick glances) but never seen a mountain lion.

Thanks Y'all....I love to see these critters in the wild :)

Ewker...yes, everytime I go out to shoot,
I just don't post them...I delete them :)

top dawg...the big kitty is top of my list of things I want to photograph. I see signs all the time in the Golden Trout Wilderness just haven't seen the cat.

It was foggy down at the lower elevations.

Way cool pictures!

"I see signs all the time in the Golden Trout Wilderness just haven't seen the cat."

Of all the wild animals out there, I think mountain lions are the ones I am most in awe and a little fear of. I know they stalk their victims and are so stealthy that they are very difficult to detect. What is their reputation in the Golden Trout Wilderness? Any reports of an attack on humans recently or even a near miss?

Great photo!

There are many bobcats in my area of
middle TN (south of Shelbyville).

We also have a profusion of coyote.

A friend has a deer stand on my property,
he saw a bobcat go after a full grown doe.
The deer barely got away from the attack.
It was apparent that she was severly
injured.

Ruby- The GTW is open to hunting (deer/bear, etc.)that seems to make all the critters pretty shy...unlike their cousins in the National Parks who show little or no fear of man. Back when I had my backpacking shop...a couple of guys I knew came into the store after a trip to Maggie Lakes in the GTW...they said a doe had ran across the trail at full speed just a couple of feet in front of them with a Mountain Lion hot on her heels...they felt uneasy for the rest of the trip :) In fact they were kinda pale looking just telling the story.

As long as the cat continues chasing the deer and doesn't decide that this old fat boy would be a whole lot easier to catch....I would love to witness and possibly even photograph the "big kitty" in action.

WW, she or he is a very beautiful and a very cute kitty bob! How very special and how lucky you were to see her sitting so calm like with the pretty flowers all around.
As always just beautiful pictures.

A while back there was an interesting article about mountain lions in either Outside or NG Adventure. I can't remember which one it was now. I'm pretty sure it was over a year ago, maybe closer to two.

Nice. I am so jealous of you guys being able to run over to Yosemite like that.

Jerry and I are going to hike Hite Cove on Sat, April 9th. It's right outside Yosemite off hwy 140. There should be an abundance of wildflowers that weekend since the Yosemite Association is offering a wildflower photography event there the following weekend. I posted more about our hike on the Northern CA thread. We'd enjoy your company, if you're free that day. Hikin Mike, the whole hike is 9 miles round trip, but the best wildflowers are early in the hike. I expect it's too early in the recovery phase for that far, but it might be worthwhile for the flowers at the start.
