I just got an email from PBS. This Sunday the movie Appalachians will be showing in Nashville on the local channel. You may have to check your own listings.

There is a small movement of people back to subsistence farming. There is even a magazine for them, but the name escapes me now. It's basically a movement to get totally off the grid and be completely self-sufficient.

Do they have a web site?

Here's test to prove (or not) what I think Ewkers thought is.

As you sit at your computer, what phase is the moon in?

No Google, no calendar. Is it full, 1st quarter? Is it getting bigger (waxing) or smaller (waneing)?

I know I can't answer that.
How disconnected from nature are we?

This is North Alabama. We have no idea what's in the sky above the clouds during the spring. lol...

Got me, Navi, although I often do know what's happening with the moon.

Gardening has huge appeal for me, but I'm stymied by the deer where I live, I would need to put in 300+ feet of fence and gate the driveway to keep them out. Maybe, this year......

I make pies from scratch with whole wheat flour and fresh fruit every Christmas and Thanksgiving. Then I literally walk my butt off until backpacking season. Is it worth it? The answer changes with the seasons.

I think the reality of the work week is why people do less of what used to be the work week. When we moved to here (1988), my retired neighbor grew her own beans to dry and later boil up, like the dried beans that are so cheap in the store. The retired neighbors on the other side raise chickens for food and have a fenced garden for their fruits and vegies.

Ewker! They're off the grid. How can they have internet access?

they use solar power or their windmills.

Navi, it's a half moon right now, I think waxing but not sure. I tend to get waxing and waning mixed up, the bright parts on the left.

Bitpusher, I was going to mention that book (Five acres and independence, by Kains). It's a great book!

Lyra, Chickens are mean and stinky. Whatever you pay for those eggs ($3.99 a dozen up here!) is worth not having to deal with them, lol. Ever heard of a kickin' ready rooster? You can't ever leave them without a chickensitter too. Makes it hard to zip off for a nice weekend away. When we had the quails they'd peck our hands when we took their eggs. They were tiny compared to your average chickens. I wouldn't want to deal with a mad hen.

sass, did you ever take a chicken by its neck and whirl it around until it snapped...oh that was fun..freaked me out the first time I ever did that. I was about 6-7 then.

No, we only had quail and Birch did them in. I had japeneese geese at home with my folks for awhile but they took over the yard, no one could go outside safely so they "went to the farm".

Navi, I knew the moon question without hesitation. A day past first quarter, waxing. Full moon next friday. Just for giggles I planted my garden under a waxing moon, and according to a lunar gardeners calendar. It's the most successful garden I've ever had. I can't say if that's one of the reasons or not, but it does keep me on a good garden maintenace schedule.

this looks like a good book to read. Even if you didn't do any of what it said. I think it might be worthwhile to have around.

The Self Sufficient Life and How to Live It is the only book that teaches all the skills needed to live independently in harmony with the land harnessing natural forms of energy, raising crops and keeping livestock, preserving foodstuffs, making beer and wine, basketry, carpentry, weaving, and much more. This new edition includes 150 new full color illustrations and a special section in which John Seymour the father of the back to basics movement explains the philosophy of self-sufficiency and its power to transform lives and create communities. More relevant than ever in our high-tech world, The Self Sufficient Life and How to Live It is the ultimate practical guide for realists and dreamers alike.

Waxing? Waneing?
Just remember "DOC".
If it looks like a D it's getting bigger, if it looks like a O it's full, if it looks like a C it's getting smaller.

Waxing is getting bigger, like you're putting wax on the car. You're adding to the car.

Anyway, that's how I remember it.

The first time my wife ever ate canned vegetables was when she went to college. The food during summers used to be great. Her grandad passed away this week. The family farm is still in their hands, but it hasn't been worked in a few years. It was great hearing all the old stories. He had 21 brothers and sisters. I think 5 are still living. There was an age gap so that he was the oldest living at home when his dad died and he became the man of the house. His youngest sister was 1 when this happened. It was sad to hear her talking about feeling like her brother AND her dad died at the same time. I'm getting sidetracked, but they lived the typical rural South farm lifestyle. The old timers still live that way. Heck, he was back on his tractor 2 weeks after by-pass surgery. This was about 10 years ago though.

Yall can quit humming "Patches" now.

Re: mashed potatoes.

Really not much work involved. You don't even have to peel them, just wash the dirt off the skin. Cut 'em up to decrease cooking time, boil 'em until soft, drain, then mash 'em with some milk, butter, pepper, whatever. We use an electric mixer - easy. Garlic goes nice in them too. Serve. Eat. Yum.

I guess most of us would like to at least be able to support outselves in the event it was necessary. Some good magazines are Mother Earth News?, The Backwoodsman, and at one time American Survival Guide. Does anyone know if its still in print? I know i wanna be a Duke and drive an old stock car while making the local law look stupid with corny plans.

If an increasing number of shootings and acts of violence can be traced back to violent video games, doesn't that mean that a man will get more sex the more porn he watches?

Two google searches would reflect the answer to your question.

Take on the day.

unfortunately simer you are conclusions are inverted. YOu see a child does not require the cooperation of others to be violent, but for an increase in sex to occur one must increse the number of partners of the frequency with the same partners. Unfortunately, both of these things seem to develop an increasing distaste for the male as they realize the amount of porn that is being watched thus decreasing the amount of sex. I hate to burst you bubble, but that's the way it goes.

If the plural os cactus is cacti, is the plural of peniz, peni?

I think according to that... shouldn't this child, that is playing video games with less interaction with other people, have less people to be violent against than the average person who interacts with more people every day.
