Guy,

Softshells are meant to be used as the outer layer. They have a w'prf/brthble membrane that impedes (did I really type 'impeads'?) breathability and this cancels the benefits of a breathable shell. Regular fleece is the best thing to wear under a Precip jacket.

Trust me on this.

I would suggest a 100wt fleece top to use under your softshell. Very lightweight and very warm. Very versitile piece.

DDX, I went to Wally World right after you got your fleece and there were literally no fleece anything there. They had cleared all of it out already to make way for shorts and bikinis and such! LOL!

oh the ones i saw weren't water proff, i want something windproff so i can where it by itself when its windy. But if it rains i can thorw the precip on top. I have a few fleece's but they need the precip to keep out the wind, but there are times, when i don't want the precip on, like around a sparking fire or something, if its not rain why where it. I don't want to carry a soft shell and a flecce so and the precip so i thought i could put a shot shell under my precip when it rains. But maybe that won't work anyother ideas

Dunno, I use a 200 wt and it's pretty good. I also use a down vest and a down sweater.

It'll work, Photoguy, but it won't breathe very well if you're active.

Never. Not while hiking. You're going to be wet either from sweat or rain

Dunno, I don't sweat much under a breatheable jacket and I find that plain fleece works best. Down is good when it's really cold and when I'm not being very active.

Johnny Walker sweats like nothing I've ever seen. He wears soft shells and it works for him. In the winter he has a permanent layer of frost all over.

Because I don't have a sweat problem fleece and hard shell are the most versatile choice for me.

do you just wear both if its windy or do you have a fleece that stops the wind better then what i have.

If it's windy (or raining) I just wear the shell. If it's cold I'll layer under the shell, removing when I'm active. When I start getting too warm I open the front and then the pit zips. I go from shell to vest and shell, to fleece and shell to down sweater and shell and when I'm standing round at FYAO, down vest, down sweater and shell with 200 wt. fleece pants over my poly tights and under my wprf/bthbl bibs. Oh yes, I wear a poly turtlenect next to the skin.

I've thought about getting a wind proof fleece but so so pricey. I do what Gremlin does. I wear my shell when it's windy. And even when it's pretty cold out, I only wear a long sleeved breathable shirt and my shell. At breaks I put on more clothes.

Photoguy, that looks like a really nice warm fleece the REI one. I have been looking and researching a new fleece for myself...I just today found a brand new Patagonia R4 windproof fleece jacket on a Buy it now auction for 139.00..it is one I had been considering, I choose this one because it is the warmest fleece Patagonia makes...I was looking for one to keep me warm while at camp in the evenings and mornings. I had to get the mens one..which im sure is okay and will fit a women okay.
Pixie Ebay has some good prices on the this jacket the R4 wind proof.
I am anxious to see how it fits and how warm it will keep me. I sure would have considered this REI..I had not seen that one, it looks very warm too

Columbia Titanium Soft Shell

I just got one of these at a great price. The jacket tag says it's waterproof, windproof, insulative, tougher than fleece, breathable, and it stretches.

Oh come on...really ?

Yea, really.

A tad heavy, especially when wet and it kinda "feels rubbery"...kinda sorta.

Great deal for the price though.

LOL

Well, at least it packs down smaller than my fleece jackets. I'll take it on a week long hike next month and give it a try.
