I'm organizing a camping trip for my clients where I work and we're thinking of doing a 2-nighter trip.... no backpacking, just camping.

The thing is, we are looking for quasi-backcountry campsites... AKA NOT campgrounds. Since some of my clients can't handle social situations with strangers (I work at a Mental Health agency), we want to avoid possible encounters with other campers.

The only "backcountry" spots I know to camp at are miles in on trails... the most we are looking to hike is 1/2 mile. I know there's a shelter on the AT (Windsor Furnace Shelter) but I've had problems parking there and getting tickets.

Basically what I want to know, is if anyone knows any other areas to plant our arses for 2 days without having to deal with other people. We're willing to drive approx 3 hours from the office (Sellersville, PA).

THANKS!

Trail Talkers aren't exactly agents of mental health, prepare for the worst from this bunch.

Yeah, good luck.

Scorch, There is a campsite next to the Loyalsock Creek about a 5 or 10 minute hike from the steel bridge on Mill Creek Road that might work. You can park at a small lot next to the bridge and just hike downstream on a trail until you come to some large pines. It's just off the Loyalsock trail.

Thanks, Rich, I'll look into that!
Is that trail difficult? Some of my clients aren't in the best of shape.

There are road crossings on the AT where you would be able to hike just a short way to set up a camp, but you'd have to carry your water with you and be ready to dig sanitary facilities. That does not sound like what you want though.

All the campgrounds I know of would be regular campgrounds with other campers nearby, but you might try calling some of the state parks (or check on the internet) and see if they have a group site where you would be pretty much on your own. They do have group sites at Hickory Run, and I suspect they would also at French Creek State Park.

No, it's flat and an easy walk anybody can do, right next to the Loyalsock creek.

What about comming into NJ and hittin' up the Batona campsite. Thats quasi-backcountry, and you've been there before.

Scorch, we could always do that shelter on the AT and a few people take the clients in and some of the stuff, we go park the cars someplace else and hike in. do you normally park at the hawk mt. parking lot?

Scorchie....you're ONE brave girl!! You might need your own counseling after the trip!! Backslacker probably has the best idea for your trip. Have a nice trip and be safe.

You might want to avoid the AT just because it is so crowded on weekends and others may come along who want to share the shelter with you.

Pine Grove Furnace
Drive into this state park Large group camping area 1/4 mile off road. At crosses through in the valley. Beautiful any time of year. Can drive to park and do a number of blue blaze hikes. Fishing too. One of my favorite places.

Walk-in campsites
At Cowanesque Lake, there is a walk-in campsite with its own parking, you walk in a little bit, and then you are on the lake. It is near but not on the (currently still secret and possibly interim) north end of Mid State Trail.

That is pushing your 3 hours, but I mention it because the Corps of Engineers ranger said that at one time there was a regulation that every Corps of Engineers project with camping had to have such a walk-in campsite. So you can check Raystown Lake, etc. to see if they have such things. http://corpslakes.usace.army.mil/visitors/camping.cfm

Thanks for everyone's suggestions... I have a feeling we'll wind up doing what Richb suggested, just because I know exactly where it's at and it's not too far of a walk with parking.

Backslacker, I also suggested hitting up the Batona campsite, but we want some good views, lol. Plus every time I go there, drunks going 4-wheeling usually drive THROUGH the campsite at like 4am.

Duece, not doing that because of the parking situation... you have to park at a water reservoir and last time I did an overnighter there, I got a ticket for parking there. No other parking closeby. Hawk Mt. is like a 20 minute drive.

Ginny, this trip will be during the week. But either way, I haven't really seen the AT crowded per se... even on weekends.

Hopefully, this will be a good and maybe even therapeutic trip for your clients. I'm sending good wishes for success.

Depending on the group size many state and national parks have "group" campsites. They are normally away from the single sites to cut down on disturbances. In fact the Delaware Water Gap does not have any campgrounds but I do believe they have a group site still available.

It all depends on how many you are talking about.
