Solo Tent for Motorcycle
Good info at this site! Not a backpacker, really, but got here looking for 1-man tent near or below $100 for 3-season use perhaps 5-6 times/yr. Many backpacking parameters also apply to motorcycle camping: small & light is good; I like to be able to sit up, so bivy style is out.
I've been looking at MH PCT1 (does that stand for 'Probably Collapse Tonight?'), SD Light Year CD. MSR Zoid doesn't seem any better for the $$. Stuff size is most important, esp. --length--; good if it fits in side- or topcase.
Anybody try the Eureka Spitfire? Thanks, Ron.

I've gone camping with my motorcycle. I used a bungee cord to load it up on the back and my husband had a motorcycle at the time with hard luggage. We used our regular small 3 person tent.

I met a guy from Israel that was camping around the U.S. He bought a motorcycle in the U.S. and went everywhere, like Alaska down to CA and other places I can't remember. He said it was great here, because you could go from state to state without having to cross borders like in Euroope. Oh yeah, my point, he had his motorcycle packed up as high as his head behind him. I don't know how he did it, because this was a few years ago. He probably also used a series of bungee cords.

As far as overall length is concerned I have yet to find a tent that packs as SHORT as the Coleman Cobra. Only problem with it is that it is a single pole and that if you are larger then 5'9" you will probably touch the short sloping roof. I have an aquaintance that uses one on his motorcycle trips to Baha every year.

I lived on the road for 90 days motorcycling.

We only got caught in the rain a couple of times and it was good having a tarp to hang out under.

You can always re-package your tent in two smaller stuff sacks.

The motorcycle won't mind a few extra pounds and having a roomy tent is nice.

Thanks for the info so far. Unfortunately, I'm looking to downsize what I carry when camping & want to pack it in the bike cases rather than bungee more on top. Also, I can't repack 22-in poles (of my current 3-person dome) to fit 18-in (max) sidecases.
Re the Cobra: how small does it pack? How does it compare to the Inyo Solo or Inyo 2? I can't seem to find a site (incl. Coleman's) that lists the pack size or pole length.

If you prefer lots of sitting room and a free-standing tent, the MSR Hubba is a great tent. It's not below $100 though, it's twice that. But with gas being so cheap these days you can spend your extra moolah on a nicer tent.

The two of us started out with two tents and two tarps and two SVEA stoves.

One of each got mailed home after the first week.

We probably had 40-50 pounds each and that included six-foot case hardened chains with locks.

I had a tool roll with screwdrivers and combination wrenches and tire tools, etc.

My buddy had a set of sockets and ratchet wrench.

I changed my tires in a parking lot in Calgary.

We changed oil every 2,000 miles and did tune-ups

Solo Tent for Motorcycle?

Tents are for people and dogs, not motorcycles. ;-)

I have had a TexSport Bike n' Hike (Hike n' bike?) for about 5 years. I used it primarily for solo bicycle touring. Total weight is under 5 pounds, it's roomy for one, I'm 6' and can sit up inside. Good sized vestibule, and you can find it for about $40.

You'll need to seal all the seams and spray waterproof the fly... but the extra effort is worth it.

They've got it for 50 bucks... I've seen it for much less on ebay.

If I understand what moto is asking about, which is what my friend was looking for when he was getting a backpacking tent for his offroad baha motorcycl expeditions on his BMW... the overall length of the package is the size he's trying to minimize. WHile my tarptent is about 1.5lbs lighter and packs into a smaller volume... my old COleman/Peak 1 Cobra's pole size is only about 12" long sections which makes it pack down considerably shorter which makes it easier to pack on a motorcycle.
