enough rain already
So this weekend was supposed to be the big bash on the Black Forest Trail, but alas it is monsoon season and it seems the endless rains experienced by Pennsylvania have dissolved our plans. This weekend it is supposed to rain Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday and as I look out my office window, it looks like it could rain today. That is on top of the abundant rain Pennsylvania has already recieved the last few days. Should I build an ark? Perhaps a kayak will do.

I want to get out this weekend still and have tried to find a place to get away to, but it seems the entire mid-atlantic is falling victim to the same precipitous phenomenom.

When I crossed the Sesquehanna River today on the way to work, it seemed the river was over its banks and was the highest I have ever seen it. It looks like the Chocolate River in Willy Wonka.

The Hudson is real high as well. It's a good thing it stopped raining yesterday or it probably would have gone over the floodwalls.

Yeah the weather's real crappy here. Clear and sunny with a high of 80. Funny thing is, due to all the heavy rains we've had recently and the layers of deadfall, several counties are under both flood and fire warnings today. Lots of rain, then sun to dry out surface stuff. Fun. I wish it were still cool and gray here though. With this warm weather's arrival, all of my broccoli, cabbage, and lettuces have bolted. Dang.

April is the wettest month in PA. The melting snowpack to go along with it always seems to make it worse. The streams and rivers are still high and the local trails are muddy and in some places still small streams. Other areas on the mountaintops are drying out and the bushwhack hiking is pretty good now that the snowpack is gone. With more rain coming for Saturday the trails will be muddy for some time to come. I just avoid the worst parts of them and bushwhack straight through the woods on the leaves where it isn't muddy. To get across streams I just carry waders and can get across most of them as long as they aren't too high and rapid.

Same deal up here in Maine. Ice jams are a big concern right now. More heavy rain this weekend could make things interesting.

Well the Rainmakers eyes and the Pennsylvania skies, they both turned a darker gray.

Yeah, roger on the PA rain. The murky pery's over 13 feet, they should be closing bridges soon. I guess it's a better excuse for staying in on Sat night than just being a lamer.

well, judging by the weather today, I think skipping the Black Forest Trail this weekend was the right idea. It would have been a serious mess.

Mt. Mitchell Weather and webcam (when it works)

Well, from the hot tub, cottonsocks could look up to Rich Mountain where there is snow above about 2500 feet.

Around 45 down here in the valley and the skies were steel gray and it has rained most of the day. Then a break in the clouds appeared, the sun popped out to the west and a double rainbow faintly emerged.

It was a brief break in the weather, but magical.

Nice weather in sight for the whole week. Unfortunately, brush fires are breaking out from the dry weather. Forestry officals are saying it's from arson and people flicking cigarettes from cars. I don't know why people get thrills or don't care if they catch the woods on fire.

On Saturday Crazypace and I hiked 17 miles on the appalachian trail. It was so hot and humid, we almost died. Fortunately, we arrived at my car before Mr. Death arrived.

Never in my hiking career have I hiked in such hot and humid conditions. It seriously felt like a sauna. June has been a really hot month thus far in the Mid-Atlantic. It looks like it may cool down for the weekend. Maybe we will see temps in the 80s for a change.

It's the combo that gets you. I worked in a paper mill one summer and average temperatures inside was about 120F with close to 100% humidity. I would take breaks out side and feel cold when it was 90F out.
