Anyone that is not going to Old Rag interested in putting in some miles in the Catskills? This will be my last chance to go backpacking before my wife has the baby. I will not be able to get out again for quite awhile.

come down to Old Rag with us Lt!! You will like this hike, check out the elevation profile. It's a lot closer than the North Fork was.

LTHiker, its tough with small kids in the picture. I dont get much chance for anything more than local overnighters, leaving the wife with 4 kids (oldest is 8) is a lot to ask. Typically I get one multi-day trip per year. Last weekend was our first hiking trip as an entire family. The baby was in a backpack carrier. We hiked to a remote stream and had lunch, not much more than a couple miles round trip. It was exciting for me because my wife and kids enjoyed it so much that the wife started inquiring about how we could pull off actually backpacking as a family, which has been my plan all along. Just waiting for the kids to get old/strong enough to carry some gear and water. Its tough in the beginning but good times are ahead.

Congrats on the new little one BTW!

ENS I already mapquested Old Rag 8 hours is too far for that short of a hike.

I am hopeing to do something longer on the weekend of the 8-10th of April.

You're probably best off with the Catskills right now. The Adirondacks are a mess of mud, ice, unconsolidated snow, and slush right now. This could change if we get a cold snap, but right now mud season has started.

I'd like to do a hike, but right now isn't a very good time for me.

Hang in there... My son is now 4 months old, and I'm going out this weekend for my first solo of the year. I'm "allowed" 5 trips this summer, so I'm pacing myself.

I am remembering my "Last trip before baby" and it really wasn't that long ago.

Just think, LTHiker and BackSlacker... In a few years, you'll have a new hiking partner! Like c bat says, hiking with kids is a whole new experience (one I'm really looking forward to!

I can't wait to take my 3 yo "backpacking" this summer. I figure it is one way that I will be able to get out of the house. I need to find a lightweight 3 man tent.

Sacco, would you be able to do a Friday to a Sunday next weekend? I will check my maps and find a good distance hike with some cool spots. Or judging by the VFTT trail reports 2-3 feet of snow on the trails, maybe the Balsam lake mtn leanto on Friday then Bushwack to Graham and Doubletop on Saturday.
