Where to Stay?
Is it better to pitch a tent in the campgrounds or is it better to stay at a bed & breakfast in the middle of town? Are the campsites first come first serve?

Thanks!

Campsites at the campground are definitely FCFS.

Whether or not it's better to camp or stay at a B&B is left as an exercise to the reader.

i don't think any of us here stay at the bed and breakfast, hostel or whatever. we all stay at the campsite. Right???

That's the way it's been in the past.

My daughter's birthday party has been moved to the previous weekend, so I now have an outside chance of making it to TrailDays.

(OPIE) we stayed in a cabin on the virginia creeper trail outside of town. We are looking for a quiter campisite closeby instead this year...don't want to camp with woodstock

If you hope to get any sleep on the weekend, find an alternative. If you want to party all weekend, enjoy the camping.

the size and type of camping at the other place isn't even good for all weekend partying. too many cops, too many drifters, too close

Bear tree lake campground is just north of Damascus, plenty of camping there, and if you want to drive 30 minutes away right to the base of MtRogers , then head to Grindstone campground on rt, 603 Drive east on rt 58 out of Damascus you will see Bear tree lake campground sign, keep going to Konnarock then look for Rt 603, you can pick up Grindstone campground.

I live in Konnarock .

The cops were anly a problem if you were a real jackass or if you kept alcohol out in the open. As long as you kept the bottles out of sight and drank from cups or nalgene bottles they didn't care. The Chief came by our campsite and had a few of our oysters. He knew we were all drinking and didn't care. Heck, he didn't even mind when I apologized for not having any donuts.

My vote is for the campsite.

yeah...my vote too. the cops wasn't really that bad. And I mean that's what TrailDays is all about anyway...the AT Thru hikers and the big party is really to celebrate them. Don't expect to get a lot of sleep.

Lodging in Damascus

Where is the Ironhorse campground in relation to the city?

Well, I have a room at the Montgomery house down town, but I am seriously thinking of canceling and getting a camp site.

Unless you like wood stock camping I would not suggest the camp site in town!

The Ironhorse Campground is 2 miles west out of town on US 58.

accomodations
The campsite can be loud but its interesting. One could head out toward Shady Valley and camp along Beaverdam Creek or as refrigerator suggested and head up to Beartree. Consider parking at Taylors Valley or Straight Fork and camping alongside the Creeper. I cannot predict car safety at these 2 sites. Iron Horse is along the river just west of Damascus. There are rental cabins and B+B in Damascus and Abingdon.

Little known fact: The group campsite for Trail Days is an old Superfund cleanup site.
Ignore anything bubbling up from the ground and don't eat the fish from Beaverdam Creek (wink, wink)

cyndeee, check this map:
http://www.traildays.nstemp.com/damascus_map_2004.jpg
Traildays campground is on there.
Most of us stayed there last year.

I am not sure what's gonna happen this year.

If you want action, that's where you stay.
If you don't have problems sleeping in noisy inviroments, that's where you want to stay. Earplugs anyone??

If you don't like the noise and don't like the party...then it's prolly best to find a lodge or a quit campground somewhere.

I have quit at home all year round, so I don't mind the noise. Besides...I am known to sleep through much lounder noise then that.

Oh, and you don't need to be big into drinking to have fun there.

Who is staying where??

if my daughter comes with me we will stay at party central, if i fly up and the kind souls that have volunteered to pick me me i will stay where ever they are staying. it does seem like it may be best to stay in town where it would be easier to meet more tter's.
btw are there good deals on equipment from the vendor's at trail day's?

the year before they had some great deals. They had some okay deals last year, but not as many.I am hoping for better deals this year.

yupp...the Traildays campsite is great because you can walk to town, most of the time someone will stop to give you a ride...or if you drive, you do the same for others.

Oh...and lots of freebies on the campsite too, Nix waterproof spray, boot laces, tshirts, energy bars, coffee, all kinds of stuff. and they clean your trekking poles for free.

not sure if the freebies are the same as the last 2 years though...

I'll bring the oysters for sure. I'll try to scrounge up a steamer (like a turkey fryer), but if someone else has one it will save me the trouble. I usually steam them over a fire, but a steamer is much easier.

I have a turkey fryer, but that might be an overkill for steamed oysters.

Let's just shuck them and slurp them out of the shell.
