That's white smoke.

The black smoke is when a vote for a new Pope fails to select one. They burn straw with the ballots to make the smoke black.

I'm not Catholic either, but you have to have some respect for the man. He does have the same birthday as me, May 18th. Too bad he won't live to see his next one. When I heard about his heart stopping today and they administered drugs or CPR to revive him, then renal (kidney) failure, I knew the end was near.

Yahoo is reporting he died.

there was also this report, which may be what bison was thinking about:

Over the centuries, the most traditional and telling signal that a pope has died has been the tolling of the Vatican's bells, which prompts churches across Rome to join in.

But there is also the symbolic shutting of the Bronze Door, a massive portal beneath a portico off St. Peter's Square that is closed when a pope dies and is kept shut until a new pontiff is elected.

Very definitely one of the giants of our times. He was a major factor in the end of communism, a champion of human rights, and a tireless advocate for the common person.

I'm neither Catholic nor very religious, but this was a great man.

Do you realize how much money the US could add to its economy by invading vatican city? We'd be set for ten more years of tax cuts!

Let's end the theocracy of that poor little nation and INVADE!

From an MSNBC news article on the subject:

The bronze door beneath a portico off St. Peter’s Square — which is traditionally shut when a pope dies — had one of its massive doors closed early Friday as about 30 police officers stood nearby. The door normally is closed every night at 8 p.m. and reopened the next morning.

I think that must be the new "one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel" simbol.

I saw the man twice in my lifetime - once at the Silverdome and once in Denver.

I was in high school for the Denver visit. We spread our sleeping bags out on the ground and had a big slumber party the night before. There were people from everywhere beating on drums and having a good time.

This Pope took an institution - the papacy - that could have died and made it a position to be reckoned with. Before you can exercise power, you must possess it. Pope John Paul II grabbed that power with both hands.

When he was shot, I was working for a daily paper in Virginia. We held that day's edition up until the very last moment in an attempt to avoid having the wrong headline. We were checking the AP wires every five minutes and pulling laserphotos off the machine literally as soon as they finished printing.

Does "grave condition" mean he is buried alive.

I always though they put dead in graves, except Uma Thurman in Kill Bill II of course.

Not sure why it's so important for everyone to know the exact moment when he dies. He's a human, therefore he will die. He's very very sick and will probably die pretty soon. Why not wait 'till he dies and then crank up the media machine?

Apparently some Italian news organization put out the report. Drudge apparently jumped on it. At no time did I see CNN or any other news organization publish it as a confirmed report. The backpedalling came fast and furious.

Yahoo had it up for about an hour. It's gone now.
