Back in 1978, after the second pope in as many months died, my college roommate started putting campaign signs all over the dorm urging that I be selected pope (I’m not even Catholic).

I’m seriously thinking about throwing my hat in the ring again.

OK, it's time to trot out the old saw about the old Baptist woman who says the next Pope should be a Baptist because the Catholics have had it long enough.

I'm not available. It would affect my status as a lapsed Lutheran.

I think they should elect a pope from Spain named Jesus. That would be interesting, huh?

Condolences to the many millions who loved this Pope. Sometimes I cheered his statements, sometimes I was disheartened by them - but I can see the weight of this loss for so many. He built some important bridges and brought hope and healing to many.

May the Pope RIP.

I'm glad he was allowed to leave this world the way he wanted to-- in his room at the Vatican, and near the masses of people, not in some sterile bed in a hospital....

BTW--did you hear the funny report about how they used to tell if the pope was dead? I guess they would take a little hammer and tap the dead Pope on the forehead and ask him if he was still alive? Don't know if that is still the tradition...

I saw the Pope at the Pontiac Silverdome, in Michigan in the 80s... I still have a postcard with a special stamp cancellation on it that I got from that visit.

It's still the tradition. They also call his Christian name 3 times. Karl, Karl, Karl.

Lordy, the kiddies might not have school here Monday, or certainly Wednesday, when the Vatican has tentatively set the burial. Here it Italy, you just don't know these types of school closing things until you arrive and find the school closed. Same for teacher strikes, which occur about every other month.

stikkie
Ain't it something that when the pope chooses to forgo life support to keep himself alive at his bequest, it's spun as "He wanted to extend an example of his suffering with the world", and when Terri expressed the same sentiments with her husband, it's all called into question.

SNAFU.

Dear Republicans,

You don't have to be drunk to be creative.

I'm impressed. Most of the usual anti-Christians have been downright decent on this thread.
