What should I include in a crampon repai r kit?View MessagesViewing posts 1 to 10 of 10 messages posted.
“One of the items on the packing list sent to me by Mountain Madness is a "crampon repair kit." Like a newb I did a search on google for the kit and I didn't find anything. So I turn to the wisdom of TT. BTW, I have a pair of Grivel G-12's w/antibott plates. Thanks.” 3:27:53 PM 4/03/05 “how about a portable heli/arc welder” 4:26:04 PM 4/03/05 “lol... I just have to find a pack big enough to carry one.” 5:03:10 PM 4/03/05 “one of the crampon screws got lost on one of my crampons. I didn't have a repair kit with me, so I used ductape to sort of tie it together. Worked great. so...I def. would add some ductape... shoot...even better get a couple of extra screws. Grivel sells those flex bars, I would def. get add a couple of them too. I think a micro leatherman is really all you need besides that. i have no idea what antibott plates are. Please note: this advice is coming from someone that does NOT have a repairkit...but I need one once...so this tip should be worth something. last edited: 4/03/05 5:05:07 PM” 5:03:42 PM 4/03/05 “Antibott plates are these flexible plastic plates that keep wet snow from balling up under the crampon. If I rip one of those I guess duct tape would fix it. Extra screws, excellent advice. Maybe the flex bars. Maybe an extra strap in case I break one.” 5:22:43 PM 4/03/05 “Typically any part that may break or you may lose (usually not counting the main frame). On my old SMC's I always carried a couple allen screws and wrench. On my Foot Fangs I added a toe bail to a couple small screws and spare ankle strap (with a heel clamp for long trips). As Gemini mentioned, duct tape is a good idea for many reasons, including tent repair and first aid. You may want to add a toe bail and rear clamp bail. A small coil of wire might get you through a bad spot or two as well. I would check around and see what the "usual" problems are with the G12's....does the front toe bail ever break? Does the rear bail pop off? Are the straps prone to coming off or breaking, that kind of stuff. Note.... I hadn't thought of the "flex bar"....may be a good idea. last edited: 4/03/05 5:40:51 PM” 5:35:52 PM 4/03/05 “I used to coat my crampon points with epoxy. Cheap I guess, so the points wouldn't wear down. Now, I would just use a flux wire or mig welder to build them up again. It's not a problem since I have a 110v stick welder, 220v stick welder (my favorite), flux wire welder & mig (argon) welder, oxy/ acetelyne torches, generator & trailer. 4 & 9" grinders, portable 4" bandsaw, multiple sawzalls & verticle & horizontal bandsaws.” 1:15:29 AM 4/04/05 “catshiker- I would think that welding material onto crampons would somehow weaken them. Is this not the case? Chili- For my crampon kit, I bring a mini-leatherman (got mine for $2 at ocean state job lot) and my titanium msr spoon has a wrench built in that fits my crampon bolts perfectly. Always check your crampon bolts before you put them on. I have found mine to be loose in the past. Bringing extra bolt or 2... great idea. It would suck not to summit because of a lost bolt. -percious www.percious.com” 6:31:10 AM 4/04/05 “My Camp crampons came with a wrench/screwdriver tool that I taped to a 5mm Allen key for my ice tools. I also have spare screws for my Charlet Moser's, but not for the Camp ones - I think I'll look into spare screws for them.” 7:54:48 AM 4/04/05 “Another thought.... My partner and I would bring a small file to touch up the points on our ax's and crampons on longer trips.” 8:43:08 AM 4/04/05
