Many of you know that I've gone backwards in my approach to gear. I used to have a sub 20# pack and do long distances. I've gotten into basecamping lately, and frankly, have gotten spoiled. I keep asking myself how can I take the luxuries of basecamping out on the open trail. The answer? A mechanical pack. It's dang heavy, but once you get going the machinery takes over. Engineers rule!

It floats too. There is compressed air in the metal tubing to give buoyancy.

Or, you could just pull the ripcord on the CO2-inflated raft that's in the pack...

That's why I went to a bigger pack. I like making breakfast burriotos on trips. 1# of sausage and a dozen eggs will do ya for a few breakfasts in colder weather.
