blackhead range (catskills) this weekend ?

“LThiker and i are coming up with plans for a hike this weekend.

anybody have thoughts on this idea-


start at maplecrest, go over tom cole, black dome, black head, stay at batavia kill leanto.
then acre, burnt knob, windham mts to east windham (to other car)

thoughts? info? suggestions?

it looks like this hike would be mainly up on the ridgelines- but i've never been, so i'm hoping to get some confirmation from some of the more experienced catskill guys.”

“Ironically enough, I've never hiked the Blackheads, but I've heard that leanto there has a really cool view over the lake (if it's the one I'm thinking of...)

Lookout for some of the snowdrifts on the shady slopes -- they could be doozies...”

“Sounds good to me. Those mountains are on the Eastern Front of the Catskills so I would guess that they have less snow than some other places.”

“hey rob, i just had a thought. what if instead of starting at maple crest, we start at the end of black dome road?

i checked it out and it'd be almost the same distance and elevation change, but this way we could be at the lean-to lickety-split, drop our packs and do the black heads sans packs.
sunday would stay the same as before.

so day 1 would be like this:



the lean-to is on the "L" of the word "catskill", which is only a mile from the parking lot.

another thing about doing it this way is that it would give us more options if the weather or trail conditions blow.

hey i'm starting to really look forward to this trip despite the weather. i think it's gonna be a great time.

i'm gonna prolly pack pretty heavy for once since it's only a mile to the lean-to.

beers and steaks at the lean-to will be great after a day of hard hikin!
