Jane Fonda Rooting for Hillary

'Hanoi' Jane Fonda is rooting for Hillary Clinton to become president, Time magazine reports in this week's edition.

"She 'hopes for a Hillary Clinton presidency,' but a decade of red-state living makes her doubt its likelihood," Time said, referring to Fonda's more recent Georgia roots.

The radical actress used her political clout in last year's election to help John Kerry in his failed bid to win the White House - teaming up with "Vagina Monologues" playwright Eve Ensler to register women as part of their "Vaginas Vote" campaign.
Ms. Ensler and Clinton are longtime friends. Clinton chose the "Monologues" playwright to serve on the exploratory committee when she was pondering a run for the Senate in 1999.

Hillary, in turn, agreed to write the foreword for Ensler's next play, called "Necessary Targets," about rape victims in Bosnia.

Hillary hopes 'Hanoi Jane' keeps her mouth shut and her pocketbook open.

One of my dreams is that someday Hanoi Jane gets a flesh eating disease of her face and just as she is about to succumb, she is cured but left horribly disfigured. Even that is not enough pain to pay for what she did to the men in captivity in Vietnam.

Wow!! I had the same dream. Only in my dream, she was raped to death.

Some of you younger folks may not know of the early Jane, before the Workout Tapes and Ted Turner.

During the Vietnam War, Jane Fonda toured North Vietnam, propagandized on behalf of the communists, and participated in an orchestrated "press conference" with American POWs in 1972. There's no denying that she defamed POWs by whitewashing the Viet Cong's treatment of them and later calling them liars when they spoke out.

Where is Y2 ??

In the UK (Australia & NZ) rooting is what F*cking is in the US.

Jane giving her all for the party, and this time it is not the North Vietnamese Communist Party.

stovestomper, why are you making such a big deal out of Fonda supporting Hillary. Fonda has always supported a Democrat for President.

“Hillary hopes 'Hanoi Jane' keeps her mouth shut and her pocketbook open.”

That's probably true.

And Stove is right - Jane Fonda went way beyond opposing the war, and opposed the US and its troops. She did call American POW's liars for reporting the torture.

Monkeyboy and I exchanged some email on the topic a while back. Here is an edited excerpt of what I said:

Much of the Fonda story is true, but there have been some exaggerations. There are two websites I look at when a story looks questionable. Truthorfiction.com is the politically conservative of the two, and I agree with it's account: http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/h/hanoijane.htm.

Snopes says the same thing and has a brief summary:

During a 1972 trip to North Vietnam, Jane Fonda propagandized on behalf of the North Vietnamese government, declared that American POWs were being treated humanely and condemned U.S. soldiers as "war criminals" and later denounced them as liars for claiming they had been tortured: True.
Another rumor: Jane Fonda handed over to their captors the slips of paper POWs pressed upon her is False.
In 1999, Jane Fonda was profiled in ABC's A Celebration: 100 Years of Great Women: True.

I wish I ever knew if she has apologized for calling POW's liars. My Mom's first cousin - a great guy - was a POW in Vietnam, so I have reason to take that a little personally. It's one thing to be blinded by ideology in the heat of the moment, it's another not to apologize when things become clar to all.

nezt note:
Gee... I should have read the whole Snopes thing before wondering if she apologized:

"In 1988, sixteen years after denouncing American soldiers as war criminals and tortured POWs as possessed of overactive imaginations, Fonda met with Vietnam veterans to apologize for her actions. It's interesting to note that this nationally-televised apology (during which she attempted to minimize her actions by characterizing them as "thoughtless and careless") came at a time when New England vets were successfully disrupting a film project she was working on. It's also interesting that not only was this apology delivered sixteen years after the fact, but it has not been offered again since. More than a few have read a huge dollop of self-interest into Fonda's 1988 apology. (Finally, in an interview in 2000, almost thirty "years after the fact, Fonda admitted: "I will go to my grave regretting the photograph of me in an anti-aircraft carrier, which looks like I was trying to shoot at American planes. It hurt so many soldiers. It galvanized such hostility. It was the most horrible thing I could possibly have done. It was just thoughtless.")

Whether the war was right or wrong, those who risked (and gave) their lives fighting it deserve respect, and for Fonda to brand men who were held captive and tortured as "liars" and "hypocrites" (despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary) in order to defend her political views was and is more than outrageous.

ped, I think you missed the point on why stovestomper was posting this. Has she not always supported a Democrat. Was she not married to many different Democrats. So for him to announce she was supporting Hillary wasn't a big deal.

Why didn't he use the Hanoi Jane bit when she was supporting Kerry? Seems it would have been more appropriate then esp with the Vietnam connection of her and Kerry.

Well, I was going to drive, but we now have a busted windshield. The money I was going to use to get the car roadworthy is now going to go for the windshield. So, that leaves a bit of a problem there. Then, Maple can't get time off from the new job. So, we would have to leave Friday night, which doesn't leave too much time to enjoy the weekend. This may be too much to overcome. Not giving up yet, but it is not looking all that great right now...

Thanks, Ewker. Nice talking to you.

You too, Stovie! :)
