my big toe nail...that is
Umm...my big toe nail which I bruised in February on a ski trip is finally falling off. The problem? 1. it's hanging on by a very small amount of something...skin? 2. I've got a big trip in three weekends and am wondering if this situation will cause any grief on the trail.

Words of wisdom? Mockery?

Where have you been, twinks???????!?!

You never read my toenail tales of woe? Just be a brave, share-the-same-birthday-date Scorpio and rip that puppy off. Just have a little alcohol handy.

The last time I had a toenail come off -- the "index toe" on my right foot -- I was going under the nail with a toenail clipper file to finish loosening it.

Here's support:

Cut it off now so your toe can have three weeks to heal before your trip.

Maybe you could make some $$$ off of it - I hear Wendy's chili has some pretty unique ingredients . . . . .

Eww, gross lizs!

I tried to pull it off just now but got too disgusted. Maybe tommarrow night after a lng hot shower it'll be ready?

Hey Gemini - my toe still twinkles...but it's more like a black diamond than a frost nipped twinky-toe.

just close your eyes, take a deep breath and YANK IT OFF!

it'll only hurt for a second, swear.

I would tear it off so a scab has plenty of time to form, cut it down to the quick and tape it, leave it and tape it. Sorry darlin but you may be in for a little pain.
Three weeks is plenty of time to vino up and tear the little bugger.

If I yank it it will bleed and hurt :( I know, I'm being a sissy. How about I soak it tommarrow evening so it's all nice and soft and get drunk while soaking it then rip (yikes!) it off?

I'll surround it with impenatrable liquid crystal surrounded by diamonds and rubies...it will be an heirloom for my house and all my decendants.

Both were very good examples of dry or fruity. The price was right too.

Not a fan of reds, but go for a bottle of Kendall Jackson Grand Reserve. For everyday wine I like Kendall Jackson Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay. Of course you can't go wrong with any Spatlase or Auslase...

I had my big toenail come off after I dropped a TV on it. It never gave me any problems hiking. I'd expect that you'll be fine as long as the nail bed remains intact. Darn thing took over six months to grow back.

My "wee" toenails are still weird. lol...

I just noticed the third toe in had a little tinge of pain after hiking this weekend. Hmmm... give it a month, month and a half tops... and I'll be pulling off another nail.

Twinks, just think of it as being the tough gal you are. I will telepathically send strength your way.

Incision (cut) is cleaner, more precise, and heals better than an avulsion (ripping it off). What would you do if you arm was pinned down by a boulder. ;-)

Hanging by a bunch of skin

Jess Robins concentrates as hooks through her upper chest are used to hang her during a Suspension Convention, held in Providence, Rhode Island, April 2, 2005. From tentative first-timers to well-practiced masters, more than a hundred aficionados celebrated their passion for body suspension at the three-day gathering, held in an old textile mill. Blah!

I lost a fingernail once. I let it come off when it was ready tho. It didn't hurt, but the nail bed underneath felt funky and sensitive. I kept a bandaid on it.

Cut 'er off...the toenail remnant that is.

You can hike fine without a toenail.

Reinhold Messner does 8,000 mtr peaks without his toes altogether!

:)

I'm joining the club. In Jan I kicked a rock while wearing Tevas for a creek crossing. It lifted the big toe nail off the nail bed. The thing is still on and has been getting loose ever since. Last night while sleeping I moved one foot against the other. The nail dug into the heel of hte other foot and pulled the nail back. It's still attached on each bottom corner of the nail and that's it. Talk about sitting straight up in bed!!!

Hey, with that suspension sheeyat,,, You do know what the sundance consisted of for Native Americans?? Being suspended by something in your skin is certainly not unheard of or new.

The great thing about losing toenails when you have kids, is telling them to close their eyes and hold out their hand.

Then you put the detached toenail in their hand and tell them to open their eyes.

The look on their face when you tell them what it is, is priceless.

It's finally done. I did it. I gently wiggled and twisted the toe nail...in the dark while I watched Lord of the Rings....until it every so gentle looesened itself from my body.

THE NAIL IS GONE
