Improvised cook potView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 6 of 6 messages posted.
“I am currently using an old green bean can as an improvised cook pot. Does anyone know if it is safe to do long term? I didn't know if there were packaging chemicals or whatever in the metal. I know I'm cheap, but it works great so far and it cost less than a dollar. Mapfreak” 4:28:47 PM 4/07/05 “They used to use lead solder in the seam. I dunno when they stopped doing that, assuming they did. Other than that, I can't think of anything.” 4:30:35 PM 4/07/05 “Found this on a food canning site: "Can canned foods be heated in their containers? Yes. If it is necessary to heat canned foods in the container, the top must be removed to prevent pressure build-up. The opened container may be covered loosely with a piece of aluminum foil. Then place the can in hot water and simmer. Do not put metal in the microwave." I've bought a small cheap crappy pot from a 99 cents store for...well...$.99. I use it for car camping all the time. last edited: 4/07/05 5:48:35 PM” 5:48:01 PM 4/07/05 “I use a chopped off beer can for my pot but all I do is boil water - all cooking is done in a zip lock bag in a cozy” 8:16:17 PM 4/07/05 Cheap Pot “I have been using a plastic lined tomato sauce can for my pot for the past year, cheap and easy to replace when it gets rusty. (freindly giant reference)” 10:47:35 PM 4/07/05 “That plastic liner is something I would worry about. The plastic gets too hot and you'll get chemicals in your food you don't want.” 8:53:07 AM 4/08/05
