Trail Food/Snacks “I'm looking for any info on what you all like to take as quick food and especially snacks on the trail. I'm a scouter with a new Venture Crew, so I'm talking EASY/QUICK and good stuff here. Also, have any of you ever packed crunchy or easily crumbled foods into a bubble wrap type bag in your pack? Did it work? Thanks in advance for the help. Mollie” 7:54:01 AM 4/13/05 “I dehyrdrate dehydrate dehydrate.” 7:55:35 AM 4/13/05 “Hummus and pita bread. Cut up the pita bread, stuff it in a resealable bag. Put the hummus in a squeeze tube. On one trip grossed out a few people as you "pinch" the hummus out of the tube, but tasty stuff!” 8:02:51 AM 4/13/05 “For trail food I generally try to find foods that are at least 100 cal per ounce. Some of my favorites in no particular order are: Cheezits Cliff Bars Fig Newtons Snickers Wheat & Cheddar crackers These keep my body well fueled while I’m hiking.” 8:03:01 AM 4/13/05 “What Carlette said.....jerky is my fave!” 8:03:34 AM 4/13/05 “I don't know how many calories they have, but raisins saved my butt one day when I was short on water and had to hike 3 1/2 miles without it.” 8:09:59 AM 4/13/05 “for snacks and such, i like those Snickers Marathon Bars - even used them for lunch a couple of times, i'd rather not "cook" for lunch in the summer. also, cheese or granola bars for snacks. For dinner its a dehydrated bag of leftover food from home usually - spaghetti, chili or stew is good. Breakfast is generally instant otmeal.” 9:05:12 AM 4/13/05 9:32:51 AM 4/13/05 “Also, have any of you ever packed crunchy or easily crumbled foods into a bubble wrap type bag in your pack? Mollie” ThreeDaysRations 8:54:01 AM 4/13/05 Mollie, for stuff that will get crushed, use an old pringles can, crystal light plastic container or a tupperware type plastic container.” 10:07:30 AM 4/13/05 “Pringles are yummy on the trail! :-) Thinkbubelz and I like Triscuits, dried (dehydrated) cracker spreads (hummus, black bean spread, tuna/chickpea spread, etc.) I haven't tried it yet, but we're considering the "babybel" cheeses (in individually wrapped servings) Peanut butter in a tube.... Nutty Bars Sunbelt granola bars (yummy AND cheap) Costco (Kirkwood) Trail mix and add some dried fruits to it.... Dried Mangoes (try the ones without the preservatives and sugar.) I think someone else on TT mentioned before that whatever you bring, you should make sure the food is stuff you like to eat.” 1:58:38 PM 4/13/05 “I loooove wheat tortillas smeared with peanutbutter & honey. I even make it at home. Hmmm, post workout snack anyone?” 12:08:10 PM 4/14/05 Roam Around “How do you dehydrate spaghetti or chili?” 6:23:08 PM 4/14/05 “post workout? The trout is really good - you find it at Trader Joe's markets and it is packaged by Appel and it is a 3.88oz can. Ymmmmy. It is a little heavy and bulky but as you can see weight is not an issue for me. Although I am taking a trip this summer for a week where I have asked a friend to help me learn how to travle lighter. Oh, I shudder at thought of freeze dried food for a week.” 9:08:12 AM 4/15/05 “Combos!!!!!!!!” 10:17:39 AM 4/15/05 “sandyann Have you tried the fish in the foil packets? much lighter (less water/oil) and no tin can.” 12:48:07 PM 4/15/05 “Then there's always Moose Goo... http://www.ultralightbackpacker.com/moosegoo.html Corn flour can be disguised as masa harina in the Hispanic section of your local grocery. last edited: 4/15/05 1:00:40 PM” 12:59:51 PM 4/15/05 “I've discovered that I don't really need trail snacks. I found I was eating too many calories while on the trail. I try to eat balanced meals and occasionally snack on a little bit of trail mix as I walk. I don't worry about getting more calories for my snacks. Found regular food was plenty to fuel me.” 1:10:57 PM 4/15/05 “I just made an awesome trail snack. I was eating some chow mien noodles and thought they tasted bland so I threw them in a zip lock, drizzled some olive oil over them and sprinkled them with seasoned salt, chili powder, cumin, garlic powder and ground red pepper. They're the bomb!!!!” 2:22:13 PM 4/05/06 “They also make them already made with those spices ... it's called "Top Ramen". last edited: 4/05/06 2:27:27 PM” 2:26:09 PM 4/05/06 “that's soup...these are the little hard chow mein noodles, more like stick crackers than noodles...this is like trail mix” 2:40:20 PM 4/05/06
