June 11 & 12
Looking for people to join me on one of the best loops (IMO) in the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks. It will be pretty tough hiking, but a lot of fun. Hopefully we will summit all 5 peaks this time.

are you gonna get us lost again? Is it gonna be another 16 hour hike?

I wanna go but won't commit unless you can garrantee a steak cookout and beer fest on the top of the last peak we summit.

It wouldn't be fun if I didn't.

I can guarantee a steak cookout and beer fest, if you haul everything up there. ;-)

It's the opposite side of the range from the Santanonis so it's much drier, but it may have a higher buttkicker level.

Let's just say when we did it last year we started at 6am and finished at 1030 pm. That was by far the longest day ever experienced on a trail by me.

It will be a challenge, but like ENS posted, know where near the mud as the Santanoni Range. It is a more difficult hike than the Santanoni Range as well, but if the weather is good there will be a lot more open views.

Giddy-Yap........Giddy-Yam !!!

Maine is halfway to Gaspe, Quebec!!

Maine is a big state......where ya gonna be??

Mount Carlton Provincial Park is a nice place to visit and only about 400 miles from Augusta in New Brunswick.
There are lakes there......nice yakkin' and fishin'.
Mount Carlton is a bald and the highest thing in New Brunswick at about 2,600 feet.
Hiking trails go over the top.
Voo-lay-voo Francais?
The nearest "big" town is Ste. Quentin.

Further north in Quebec is The Chic Chocs.....wild stuff.

Yam, you might just meet Onca Gremlin!!!!!

Only problem with Quebec is the people that live there talk funny. It's like they speak another language or something.

Would anyone consider sharing a tent if one is needed? I'll help shoulder the load, but it would help to cut down on overall pack weight.

I plan to sleep under my tarp. I could fit another person under it, but you would need to bring a ground cloth to sleep on.

I'm out
I was a maybe, but now I'm a negatory. I'm attending the Devil's Path trip the weekend before, and that's enough long-driving for me. Plus, I'll be in high gear finishing the 48.

You guys have fun. The Dix Range kicks arse.

I have June 10-11-12 off.........

Is this place near Newcomb?

Will the bugs be a-chewin'?
MarkO

4/25/05

Keene Valley is the closest village. You will want to stay on I-87 past the Newcomb exit (exit 29) and get off at exit 30. I think I’m going to camp at the trailhead like last time.
lumberzac

If I can escape the gravitational pull of Baltimore, I'll see ya at the trailhead on Friday(6/10).

I see where you will be tarpin' it......bugs??
MarkO

Black flies will probably be in full force. I want to look into getting some bug netting for my tarp.

Lumberzac - thanks for the offer to share. Are you pretty confident in the route-making for this trip? Sounds tricky by your history thread. Call me a girl, but I want to know what I am getting myself into.

I know the exact point were we went wrong the last time. We need to follow the tributary that goes to the left just before the campsite.

Is that Friday night's camp??
MarkO

Friday's campsite would be here:
http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?z=18&n=4885264&e=603227&s=50&size=l&datum=nad83&layer=DRG25

There's a small parking area and a designated camping site. One thing to note is that there is no sign or register at this site, because there isn't an official trail there.

WhooHooo!! BugShirt came today. In fact, I'm wearing it right now.

I'll more than likely bring some sort of tent.

That looks to be about three miles NW of Exit 30 from I-87, just off Route 73.

What, no Bobo?
MarkO

Pepsi, properly hung bear bags should be fine in the Dix Mountain Wilderness. If we were in the Lake Colden, Marcy Dam or Johns Brook Valley area it would be a different story.

MarkO, 3 miles NW from exit 30 sounds about right. There are also more detailed directions on the trip main page.

Well, yeah about the cooties, but you left so early last week, I don't know how much you reek. ;o)

Pepsi - I use my Ursack in that area without problems, but to be safe, I always sprinkle trailmix under Zac's tarp before I go to sleep.
