Bottom line: You're not doing any kid a favor by NOT giving full disclosure of what's around the corner and by NOT providing them appropriate means to protect themselves. Rubbers behind the counter of the drugstore was a terrible mistake, IMHO. I'll be sure my kids know where the Planned Parenthood clinic is so they can get all the condoms they want and tell all their friends about it, too.

people act like every 16 yo girl is having sex. It just isn't true. Most studies show that less than 40% of 15-17 yo girls have had vaginal intercourse. Sure that leaves oral and anal, but how many girls that won't do vaginal will do anal?

rosey, my 14 yo daughter knows what sex is, she knows about condoms, and STDs. She's learned about it both in middle school and at home from her parents. We still teach her abstinence. You act as if there are only to choices, tell her to go fucck her brains out or give her a chastity belt. I prefer a more balanced approach.

I think the big problem is the guys get NO training in the PROPER treatment of women...hell its like giving the kid a license and just turning the car over to him with no training.

To be able to get jiggy the boys should have to go through a semester long course on proper use and care of a woman. Then if they knock some girl up....the girl HAS to give a Father (or all possible suspects) for any public assistance. That way if Jimmy leaves his seed in Cindy he will get a call from the State a month after the birth informing him he will be responsible to pay the State "X" dollars a week for care of the kid.

Sorry but MAKE the GUY responsible.

and by NOT providing them appropriate means to protect themselves.

Agreed, but condoms are not the only means to protect themselves.

phaedrus, do you have a daughter or a son, or both perhaps. Serious question. I am sure I would probably approach it differently if I had sons instead of daughters (I do have a son, but he is way down the road before this talk ever happens).

Sure thing, HPM. I'm just saying, teens (at least I was) are renowned for doing the exact opposite of what their parents tell them. they are also very curious when lots of their friends are discussing experiences and then have a hard time relating. So at least give them an avenue. Condoms, diaphram, the pill, whatever. Planned Parenthood is great for all of those.

Hyway is right. A balanced approach is best. Give them all the information they will need, and then tell them what kind of choices you expect them to make. And I don't mean condom choices.

When I was a teenager, the only health concerns were getting pregnant and getting an STD. Nowadays you can get HIV which is not curable and likely a death sentence.

That said, if I do have a daughter:

I don't have any girls.

What I told my boys is to basically "don't let your love go cheap".

Imagine that you have knocked up some one whom you would not like to spend any time with.
Now imagine that girl gives birth to your child and that kid, who is your baby and my grandchild, grows up in less than desirable circumstances or worse.
That is a sort of abstinence talk.........make it count, but use contraception if you must do the do even with someone you adore, and save your fertility for when you really want a child.

Why should anybody go to jail? It was her choice, right? Her parents gave her that choice, by your logic. She is old enough, according to your view, to make decisions about her sex life, even if it is with an older man.

I thought that was hysterical, but that was Dave Chapelle ('less Rush ripped him off). Sure way to de-glamorize sex for an all school assembly.

Kids will always push the limits, where you set those limits has a lot to do with how far they push. If you don't set any limits they push themselves into abandon searching for them.

Well, I mean, I feel sorry for the lass but really, it is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Brit the ho-bag makes it big, is worshipped by million of teeny boppers, little sis grows up watching it, becomes a ho-bag, gets knocked up, and on and on...

My sympathies lie with the youngest daughter becuase she obviously didn't have adequate role models, whether it was mom, who apparently condoned Brit's behavior (was she even 18 when she cut the Ooops album?) and her big sis, who set the bar pretty low for how to carry yourself in the public eye.

What constitutes an angel?

If you mean it to be a kid who didn't drink dope and #&%!$ anything that moves then yes, I was an angel.

If you mean it to be a kid who never got into trouble then no, I was not an angel.

As with anything you should aim high, make an honest effort and be satisfied with your results. We all screw up, but that does not invalidate aiming for a high goal.

ANd on this I must agree with Rosey.

You know environment does have an effect. We had a kid in Savannah who at 15 was busted for destroying 5 Dumptruck windshields. His mother agreed to send him to "Uncle Jim's"

Jim had a set schedule of WORK, Study...he had everything timed out. The first year all the kid did was basic slave labor and study. The next year he made the football team...and on and on.

Uncle Jim was a Farmer...but a retired USMC Gunnery Sgt. He had been a DI and even in a beat up Ford with bib overalls looked LIKE A MARINE. I was visiting an old friend in the projects some years later and she called someone she "knew I wanted to meet" . The KID was now a Marine Lance Corporal.

Oh his momma....she died of a Meth overdose a couple years earlier. He was home on leave and had been at a cousin's house in the city. He explained he learned about Responsibilty from his uncle. And he learned that he really WANTED to be a Marine.

And for anyone wondering if this is another example of "its the best he could do"....no he actually at that point had completed an Associates Degree of Engineering Technology. But he WANTED to be a Marine LIKE HIS UNCLE.
