Today I went to the Annual SCICON Barbeque and Wildflower Festival. SCICON is Tulare County's Science and Conservation Camp and it lies in the beautiful foothills only 3 miles northeast of where I live. This is the first time I've gone to this festival and I was so glad I did. The food and entertainment was great and the wildflowers are incredible there right now!! California certainly has had an amazing spring for wildflowers this year and the displays on the SCICON campus are the best that I have ever seen in the Sierra Nevada foothills! I counted over 40 different species on a short hike that I did including many I'd never seen before. I'll share more of my photos later on but I wanted to pick one flower to share with y'all this afternoon...

Fairy Lanterns, Calochortus amoenus, are among the sweetest little flowers I found and saw today for the first time. I'd always seen them in books and longed to see them in person. What delicate little soft rose-pink beauties they are and true to their name they hang upside down like a lantern. I turned one up so you I could photograph the inside, though, as you'll see in the last photo... They only grow on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California.

Very nice. Looking forward to all your flower shots.

What are the chances of wildflowers around Cottonwood Lakes in mid-June?

Ruby - Thanks :) You'll probably start to see some of the earliest wildflowers coming out... June is usually when the mid-elevation conifer forests are peaking and the higher elevations are just beginning.

BC, the striations in your nails indicate a vitamin deficiency. Just thought you should know.

Good grief, first the cuticle then I need to cut my nails and now I need vitamins. Which ones? I take a multi-vitamin every day...

"Nail ridges and spots are seldom anything to worry about. Many people have white lines or spots on one or more nails. Vertical ridges or striations are often hereditary and may become more prominent with age."

and the older you are, the more likely you will die sooner and therefore proves that striations will kill you because because of a vitamin deficiency! Geesh, do I have spell it out for you?

Well, I'm "Sequoia" on the other site, but that name was already taken when I tried to sign in here :p But even Sequoia isn't really girlish as it was the name of a Cherokee Indian Chief. Oh well, what'a a girl to do?
