Sometimes the best "trips" are at home
Perfect weather Saturday evening, mid-70's, clear skies, so my wife says "lets roast some hot dogs and marshmallows over a campfire in the backyard". Sounds like a plan. So she made a quick trip to the local country store for some dogs, potato salad, and marshmallows as I gathered some deadwood from the woods around our house. We already have a campfire ring in the backyard, so I stacked the wood, added some paper, and found some good twigs to hold the dogs.

The four of us (we have 2 girls) sat around the campfire for several hours, watching the sunset over a hill in front of us, enjoying the warmth of the fire and the taste of the smoked dogs. My wife and I are rarely drinkers at home, but we even popped open a few cold cans as the sun disappeared.

What more could you want?

Kind of funny that StoveStomper posted a thread about a "backyard trip" while I was posting this. Must have been a good weekend for hanging at home.

you could want the kids to go to bed early ;)

my daughters slept in teh tent in the yard saturday night. I spent all day saturday pressurewashing our backdeck, sidewalks and playground equipment so was more interested in my soft comfortable bed.

One of the coolest things about the old Llama-Ramas was Mel and John's little house and the fire pit they had in their yard. The house sits at 7,000 ft and is shaded from the setting sun by a 13K+ foot mountain in their "backyard". It got cold as the sun was going down and that fire pit was the center of attention. I was sitting there one afternoon and I realized just how little men have really evolved in the last couple thousand years or so. We're really not much more than cavemen with some technology thrown in. We still have this past of thousands and thousands of years where we sat around the campfire, told stories, and "dreamed the fire" as they say in Africa. Everybody loves a campfire.

Anyhoo, several years ago I stacked me up some old bricks I had lying around into a nice three sided hearth. Since the back side of my lot is wooded I have plenty of free deadfall off of my red oaks. In the spring and fall we have lots of fires. My son learned to build fires and be the fire tender back there. That was an important job back in caveman days. Nowadays if he wants a fire he just goes out and builds one. He's becoming a good caveman.
