Hairbraiders unite!!!View MessagesViewing posts 1 to 4 of 4 messages posted.
I thought this was a joke at first... “when it came in as a press release at work. I SUPPOSE there's a point there. But on the other hand, it seems like it might make a great Dave Chappelle skit, or South Park fodder!!!! Institute for Justice Media Advisory EVENT: African Hairbraiders Fight for the Right to Earn an Honest Living: Minneapolis Media Conference to Announce Lawsuit Challenging Minnesota Cosmetology Licensing Law TIME/DATE: 10:30 a.m./Wednesday, April 20, 2005 PLACE: Extensions Plus Minneapolis, MN CONTACT: Institute for Justice, SUMMARY: Americans are supposed to have the right to earn an honest living in the occupation of their choice without facing burdensome government regulations. But that’s all but impossible for Minnesotans who practice the art and business of African hairbraiding. For African hairbraiders, Minnesota’s cosmetology regulations are a tangled mess. The State licenses cosmetologists with no braiding experience to braid hair even as it forbids experienced braiders from practicing their craft—that is unless they sacrifice nearly a year of their time and up to nearly $15,000 to take classes completely unrelated to their field. That means experienced braiders like Lillian Anderson from Minneapolis may not legally braid hair for compensation. Laws like Minnesota’s serve only to protect entrenched interests—licensed cosmetologists and cosmetology schools—from competition at the expense of would-be entrepreneurs. The newly formed Institute for Justice Minnesota Chapter will file suit tomorrow in Hennepin County District Court on behalf of Lillian and two other Minnesota braiders challenging the State’s hairbraiding licensing scheme. They will announce that lawsuit at a press conference hosted at Anderson’s studio, Extensions Plus. With this case, IJ-MN hopes to build on victories eliminating cosmetology licensing requirements for African hairbraiders in Arizona, California, Mississippi, Washington, D.C., and Washington State. ” 10:20:30 AM 4/19/05 “I gotta give this one more try!” 4:00:35 PM 4/19/05 “i wunder if corn rows would cover up my bald spot?” 4:09:33 PM 4/19/05 “A similar thing happened in California a few years ago. Not sure how it turned out here.” 10:40:17 PM 4/19/05
