Mark - that's something my wife and I were talking about last night. The news showed a cardinal walking in and a lady taking his coat. How bad would it suck to be the coat check person for 1000 people with identical coat/capes. I think there's a FAR SIDE cartoon in there somewhere.

why do they always pick an old guy as Pope. The last Pope was the exception to the rule. Remember he replaced one that had been Pope for a week then died.

"crying"...LOL @ MarkO!

isn't there some rule saying the elected Pope has to be old as dirt? most of my knowledge of popes is limited to what i learned in some book by the guy who wrote The Davinci Code, so what do i know. hmmm, maybe i shouldn't admit that out loud?

yeah...I thought they already stood in line to become pope for many, many, MANY long years, thus the reason why they are so freakin' old.
No?

As a Catholic, I hope our new pope brings about reform. The sex abuse scandel just about broke my faith in the Church. I know most pastors are good and respectful. The few that commit those crimes should not be protected by the Church. I was also hoping for a pope from other than Europe. I think a pope from Asia, Africa or South America would bring a rebirth to the Church. I think John Paul II was a good pope, but basically the old guard has been elected.

Early Biography of the Pope
Joseph Ratzinger was born in Marktl am Inn, in Bavaria, the son of a police officer who was staunchly anti-Nazi. In 1937 Ratzinger's father retired and settled in the town of Traunstein. When Ratzinger turned 14 in 1941, he was required by law to join the Hitler Youth, but according to his biographer John Allen he was not an enthusiastic member. He requested to be taken off the rolls and reportedly refused to attend a single meeting. In 1943, at the age of 16 he was, along with the rest of his class, drafted into the Flak or anti-aircraft corps, responsible for the guarding of a BMW plant outside Munich. He was then sent for basic infantry training and was posted to Hungary, where he worked setting up anti-tank defences until fleeing in April 1944 (an offense punishable by death). In 1945 he was briefly held in an Allied POW camp, where he attended de-Nazification classes. By June he was released, and he and his brother (Georg) entered a Catholic seminary. On June 29, 1951, they were ordained by Cardinal Faulhaber of Munich.

The only reason I even care is that I was hoping they'd reconsider allowing birth control. Considering the vatican's tendency to be about 200 years behind reality we could be a world of hurt by the time they realize there's a problem.

This is the church equivalent of telling all the non-conservatives in the church to go screw themselves.

You know what irks me about this pope thing. This whole time when we've been reading about the passing of the pope and the electing of the new one, it's almost like Catholics are worshipping the Pope himself. Like the person who said "it's just not Easter without the Pope."

Ummm...yes...it is.
