Alison KraussView MessagesAnd Union Station “the wife and I took the kids (ages 6 and 9) to see AKUS last night. Fun show. Awesome band. Awesome bluegrass. The encore was a fantastic acapella of "My ain true love" (from Cold Mountain) with Dan taminksy on the harmony. Chills down your spine. Followed by "Down to the water to pray", or whateve the name was from O Borther Where art thou" This will come as a suprise to those of you who "know" me as a Connecticut Aetheist. . .but I love oldtime bluegrass and gospel music. It was a great show.” 9:24:52 AM 4/20/05 “she is one of the better bluegrass artists in the mainstream today. She's gonna be at Red Rocks in August, but I'll be in Montana and can't make the show.” 9:26:51 AM 4/20/05 “One of my favorites! I would love to see her in concert, she was here two years ago and I wasn't able to go...” 9:27:54 AM 4/20/05 “Union Station is one of the finest collection of musicians around!” 9:28:39 AM 4/20/05 “It was in a small theatre in Waterury CT that has just undergone a $30 million renovation. Has only been open about a month. 2,650 seats. Even from the lower mezzanine it was a pretty good spot.” 9:29:06 AM 4/20/05 “Big fan here. I'd go one step further Roam and say they are the one of the best bluegrass outfits out there. Lee, good music is good music. You don't have to "Be" anything to recognise and enjoy it.” 9:37:37 AM 4/20/05 “Lucky you! I'd love to see her. Another one on my list is Gillian Welch (I'm pretty sure that's her last name.) Or better yet, both of them with Emmy Lou Harris.” 9:39:44 AM 4/20/05 “Gillian welch is often on Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Kellior, with her boyfirend/husband?, David something I think. She is a great songwriter (and singer!). I have a recording of Emmy Lou doing Gillian's song "orphan girl". I give me goose bumps just thinking about it.” 9:48:37 AM 4/20/05 “I've been a fan of hers for years. It annoys me that country music stations can't/won't play more of her music. When I am driving through Virginia or North Carolina, I love picking up bluegrass stations on the radio.” 9:48:49 AM 4/20/05 “I once saw a "Legalize Bluegrass" bumpersticker.” 9:50:09 AM 4/20/05 “I'm in love with Allison Krauss :D” 10:02:37 AM 4/20/05 “I am lucky to live in Nashville where Alison and Emmylou live - they perform here pretty frequently. I also heard Gillian Welch a few years back at Merlefest and it was pretty awesome. I hate country music, but the folk/bluegrass types are my favs. Glad you got to see some good music lee.” 10:09:25 AM 4/20/05 “saw them in fairbanks, one of the best concerts ever” 10:22:24 AM 4/20/05 “Alison Krauss has one of the most beautiful voices in the world today. Her CDs send chills up my spine.” 10:44:11 AM 4/20/05 “Oh, yeah, Gillian Welch and Emmylou Harris are great too! Wouldn't it be fun to see them all together in concert? Nickel Creek is another great Bluegrass Band.” 11:04:52 AM 4/20/05 “yep. Like Nickel Creek. Next best "bluegrass".. Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys, Armadillo World Headquarters, circa 1979. John Hartford and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Circa 1975.” 11:08:34 AM 4/20/05 “I don't really consider Nickel Creek to be bluegrass, more bluegrass influenced, but still a great band.” 11:43:53 AM 4/20/05 “those are the "cute young people"” 11:50:07 AM 4/20/05 “well, I am amazed as all get-out to see this side of Lee. ;-P But I, too, am a bluegrass fan -- which would also probably make people keel over in amazement. Reminds me... there's a little, local homegrown bluegrass fest sometime soon in this beautiful area valley. I need to see when that is. :-)” 11:59:44 AM 4/20/05 “I got to see the Down from the Mountain show a few years ago. Many bluegrass greats including gillian welch and Emmy lou, Ralph Stanley (been fortunate enough to see him 2x now), and tons of other fantastic artists. I'd like to go to more concerts but it seldom happens.” 12:17:39 PM 4/20/05 “Bluegrass is my favorite genre... which suprises many people too... since I listen to a lot of Ganster rap and broadway musics.” 12:20:37 PM 4/20/05 “LOL! Dicentra remembered! : )” 12:33:01 PM 4/20/05 “Ah, well, StoveStomper, some of Allison Krauss' solo work isn't really bluegrass, either, but bluegrass influenced :p I tend to like the artists that don't fall so neatly into any one category but have some of everything in their music - bluegrass, rock, country, alternative - it's all good in my book.” 12:38:57 PM 4/20/05 “BTW, I believe Allison Krauss produced Nickel Creek's (aka The Cute Young People) albums.” 12:51:28 PM 4/20/05 “Yes, she did, and you can tell, you can hear her influence on their music I believe.” 12:53:29 PM 4/20/05 “I have NC's CD sitting right here. It's OK and I enjoy it... but for some odd reason i prefer the banjo picking gosphel rooted bluegrass myself. One of my favorite songs is Allison Krauss singing "I'll Fly Away". I love that song.” 1:01:23 PM 4/20/05 “Well boo on you DDX! I have Nickle Creek's newest CD in my CD player in the car RIGHT NOW! ;-)” 3:33:17 PM 4/20/05 “SS, so do I.” 3:42:10 PM 4/20/05 “DeoreDX - Ah, yes, I love that song! I think you'd like the Fiddlin' Foresters... They're a group of Forest Service Employees who play old time banjo pickin music and the lead singer has a beautiful voice and they sing that song. They just recorded a CD, it should be available through their website soon http://www.fiddlinforesters.gov” 3:58:42 PM 4/20/05 “Regarding Nickel Creek, my sister introduced me to their music. Then one day I was listening to the radio and they announced a song by NickelBack, and I got all happy to hear them again. Oops....totally wrong band. One of the guys from Nickel Creek, Chris Thile, has his own album out. It's called All Who Wander Are Not Lost. The graphics on the actual CD make it look like a giant compass. Gotta love that!!!” 4:23:52 PM 4/20/05 From their website.... “NICKEL CREEK - FACT SHEET · Though originally created as a bluegrass band, their music expands on those influences by incorporating Beatles-flavored psychedelia, left-of-center alt rock, pop, folk and more. · The band is technically a trio, fiddle player Sara Watkins (23), Guitarist Sean Watkins (26), Mandolin Player Chris Thile (23) - they are supplemented on stage by a bass player-- award-winning "newgrass" veteran Mark Schatz. · They met, not surprisingly, through music, when their parents took them to hear a weekly bluegrass show at "That Pizza Place" in Southern California. They have been a band for over 13 years. · Individually, the members of Nickel Creek have performed or recorded with The Dixie Chicks, Dolly Parton, Bela Fleck, Glen Phillips and others. Both Thile and Watkins have released two solo albums each; all members won various instrumental contests in their teens. · The band recently won their first Grammy (they have been nominated four times) for BEST CONTEMPORARY FOLK ALBUM. Past winners have included Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris and Lucinda Williams. · Rolling Stone included the band in their "Best of 2002" while Time Magazine featured them in the music innovators special in May of 2000, naming them one of 5 Music Innovators for the Millenium. · THIS SIDE release date: August 13, 2002 - Debuted at #18 on the Top Album Chart. This Side has sold over 400,000 copies. Self-titled debut (release date March 2000) has sold over 800,000 albums. · Most of the songs on THIS SIDE were written by Chris Thile and Sean Watkins, though they also cover songs from diverse sources: Pavement, Tim O'Brien, folk singer Carrie Newcomer along with traditional songs. · Alison Krauss, who produced both albums, describes their sound as "just Nickel Creek music." http://www.nickelcreek.com/ I hate this site's design.” 4:46:04 PM 4/20/05 “Dang lee, I thought you were a Maryland atheist. Glad you corrected that. ;-) Anyone notice how HOT Sara Watkins is looking now a days? She's lost that baby fat! ;-) She has another great voice.” 4:50:10 PM 4/20/05 Her Voice Could Peel Paint “Alison Krauss is one butt-ugly cuss, ain't she? Can't play a lick on that fiddle either!” 5:02:36 PM 4/20/05 “Buddur, you bad boy. Quit yer trolling. ;-)” 5:04:15 PM 4/20/05 “A couple other bluegrass acts to check out: The Lonesome River Band; and The Kenny and Amanda Smith Band. Especially the Lonesome River Band stuff with Kenny Smith on guitar. But great guitar work on both of them and good songwriting.” 3:58:48 AM 4/21/05 “King Wilke, Old Crow Medicine Show and Yonder Mountain String Band (among many others) are a few other "newer" BG bands to check out.” 4:33:38 AM 4/21/05 “DDX likes show tunes? Feigning surprise. HPM - I know a guy with a "Get High on Bluegrass" bumpersticker. I have some downloads from all the folks mentioned and need to go buy some CD's of the same. Non bluegrass, but is anyone familiar with Leon Redbone?” 6:08:53 AM 4/21/05 “Birch and I saw Old crow medicine show at the Ann Arbor Folk fest two years ago. They are awesome!” 6:43:23 AM 4/21/05 “Nickel Creek is in Huntsville this Wed, 4/27/05” 6:55:36 AM 4/21/05 “Leon Redbone was good but I haven't heard anything from him in a while. Nickel Creek is a different style of bluegrass. BTW what does Alison Krauss sing? I have heard the name but always thought she was country (yuck)” 8:37:30 AM 4/21/05 “There used to be a big Fiddler's Convention with some good bluegrass in Athens every year, but I don't know if they still have it or not.” 8:42:58 AM 4/21/05 “Ewker - he's in his 70's now. Late August he's playing at a theatre about an hour east of me. I'm going to try and make it. He was the snowman in Elf and had about 3 songs on the soundtrack. bit - they still have it. I checked the itinerary a couple of years ago and they even had buck dancing.” 8:48:45 AM 4/21/05 “ ”8:50:53 AM 4/21/05 “dayhiker, Redbone had a very unusal style of singing that I enjoyed. I haven't seen Elf yet but I will now.” 8:53:12 AM 4/21/05 “The Snowman I mentioned is the same style as the one from the claymation cartoons of the 70's. The one in elf looks like Burle Ives AND Leon all at the same time. It's a short clip, but he's singing and I knew it had to be him. I made sure to check the credits and sure enough. My daughter loves the soundtrack. She still asks to listen to "Buddy Elf Music," but we finally retired it til next winter.” 9:00:24 AM 4/21/05 “i love alison kraus. i got to sit in on one of her tapings. great artist.” 1:14:41 PM 4/21/05 mmmm “ ”2:18:24 PM 4/21/05 “She's playing at Red Rocks Ampitheatre... its a toss-up between her or Wille Nelson.” 5:25:57 PM 4/21/05 “Definitely both. Can't miss Willie. (One of my faves)” 5:33:32 PM 4/21/05 “Must resist not to buy tickets to all shows... UGH! It's not working!” 8:49:37 PM 4/21/05
