The encore was a fantastic acapella of "My ain true love" (from Cold Mountain) with Dan taminksy on the harmony. Chills down your spine.

Followed by "Down to the water to pray", or whateve the name was from O Borther Where art thou"


This will come as a suprise to those of you who "know" me as a Connecticut Aetheist. . .but I love oldtime bluegrass and gospel music.

“Regarding Nickel Creek, my sister introduced me to their music. Then one day I was listening to the radio and they announced a song by NickelBack, and I got all happy to hear them again. Oops....totally wrong band.

One of the guys from Nickel Creek, Chris Thile, has his own album out. It's called All Who Wander Are Not Lost. The graphics on the actual CD make it look like a giant compass. Gotta love that!!!”

“NICKEL CREEK - FACT SHEET
· Though originally created as a bluegrass band, their music expands on those influences by incorporating Beatles-flavored psychedelia, left-of-center alt rock, pop, folk and more.

· The band is technically a trio, fiddle player Sara Watkins (23), Guitarist Sean Watkins (26), Mandolin Player Chris Thile (23) - they are supplemented on stage by a bass player-- award-winning "newgrass" veteran Mark Schatz.

· They met, not surprisingly, through music, when their parents took them to hear a weekly bluegrass show at "That Pizza Place" in Southern California. They have been a band for over 13 years.

· Individually, the members of Nickel Creek have performed or recorded with The Dixie Chicks, Dolly Parton, Bela Fleck, Glen Phillips and others. Both Thile and Watkins have released two solo albums each; all members won various instrumental contests in their teens.

“There used to be a big Fiddler's Convention with some good bluegrass in Athens every year, but I don't know if they still have it or not.”

“Ewker - he's in his 70's now. Late August he's playing at a theatre about an hour east of me. I'm going to try and make it. He was the snowman in Elf and had about 3 songs on the soundtrack.

“The Snowman I mentioned is the same style as the one from the claymation cartoons of the 70's. The one in elf looks like Burle Ives AND Leon all at the same time. It's a short clip, but he's singing and I knew it had to be him. I made sure to check the credits and sure enough. My daughter loves the soundtrack. She still asks to listen to "Buddy Elf Music," but we finally retired it til next winter.”
