Yeah, I'm gonna burn one dow-ow-ow-n" I figured it was time to lay off the Ben Harper for a while. lol” 10:25:25 PM 4/20/05 9:56:52 AM 4/21/05 Irony “Cops find marijuana during 4/20 sweep Carbon County law enforcement and Highway Patrol personnel found a small amount of marijuana in a student's car during a security sweep of the Saratoga High School on April 20. Students and staff were locked down during the sweep at the request of Principal Larry Uhling to ensure the well-being of students on the sixth anniversary of the Columbine massacre, according to the Rawlins Daily Times. While no weapons or drugs were found in the building, a Highway Patrol dog alerted on a student's car in the parking lot. The student was contacted and cited for marijuana possession. He is required to appear in court. Two other Saratoga residents were also arrested on related drug charges.” 5:01:52 PM 5/02/05 “any plans for the big holiday? I can't wait to hit the river and do some paddling tomorrow :)” 6:57:33 PM 4/19/07 “I plan on finding that downed plane Michael Dougles found in "Romancing the Stone". last edited: 4/19/07 7:17:11 PM” 7:16:52 PM 4/19/07 “WELL ILL BE A SCOOBIE DOOBIE TODAY ITS 4 20 well first off why is scoobie ILL? from smoking a doobie? and it is not yet April 20th.” 7:42:11 PM 4/19/07 “where did that particular time come from anyway. Why not 4:10 or 3:50?” 7:43:15 PM 4/19/07 “420 is police code” 9:13:47 PM 4/19/07 “420 (cannabis culture) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaPhrases such as "420 friendly" sometimes appear in roommate advertisements, indicating that the current occupants are tolerant of cannabis users. freaking drugie!!” 9:21:15 PM 4/19/07 “420 goes back to the day. Along with "5 Oh". Reference to the type of cop car used. Could mean a Mustang copper, could mean an undercover with a "big" (at the time of the mid 80's) V8. Depends on where you rolled in the US.” 9:39:35 PM 4/19/07 “ahh, I found it: I knew it was cop code or any of that other stuff. I knew it was a time 4:20 pm, but didn't know why it was that time... http://parentingteens.about.com/cs/marijuana/a/420meaning.htm [quote] The Origin Revealed According to Steven Hager, editor of High Times, the term 420 originated at San Rafael High School, in 1971, among a group of about a dozen pot-smoking wiseacres who called themselves the Waldos, who are now pushing 50. The term was shorthand for the time of day the group would meet, at the campus statue of Louis Pasteur, to smoke pot. Intent on developing their own discreet language, they made 420 code for a time to get high, and its use spread among members of an entire generation. While our teens feel that they know something we don't, you can let them in on the fact that it was your generation that came up with the numbers. A quote from one of the Waldos in the High Times article states, "We did discover we could talk about getting high in front of our parents without them knowing by using the phrase 420." Fortunately, your teenagers will not have that same option. Save lives. Save money. Save taxes. Make the country safer. Save lives. Save money. Save taxes. Make the country safer. Legalize it.” Nigal 2:36:44 AM 4/20/07 Well we made it legal for medicinal use here in CA, but I'd have to say that is not what they are using it for, it's being abused. I remember when I did use it, I did try it for migraines; it does NOT work for pain at all, it would actually cause you to focus in on the pain. I voted for it so that people with glacoma and wasting diseases could leagally smoke because there is honest value in those uses. I am sorry I bothered when I see bogus ads by doctors who will write prescriptions for bogus reasons. Don't you think if I thought it worked for pain, I'd be stoned right now? 15years clean and glad of it!” 6:38:01 PM 4/20/07 “I'm not talking about for medical uses. I'm talking about the legalization of drugs for whatever reason s a person wants them for. I'm talking about ending the useless war on drugs and make drugs safe.” 9:27:49 PM 4/20/07 “Nigal, as a recovering drug addict I can assure you there are no street drugs other than what we have discussed above, that have purpose, they are NOT safe, they cannot be made so. We have not effectively controlled alchohol use/abuse and we will never do so with drugs. Forget it. I will fight the legalization of drugs to the end with my last dying breath. Do you always give up on something that has become expensive and too difficult?” 2:46:04 AM 4/21/07 “Do you always give up on something that has become expensive and too difficult? Who said anything about giving up on difficult things? As you say, we will never stop the drug problem. I'm surprised at how easily you allow over $600 a second to be wasted on a war on drugs that can never be won. If there is something that can not be stopped the logical thing is to at least control it. Ya know, just like we did with alcohol? The societal benefits of legalizing drugs would be astounding. It would actually decrease the cases of drug abuse.” 4:20:55 AM 4/21/07 “Most folks who favor legalization (or at least decriminalization) aren't saying there isn't a problem.... but after so many years it's time to try something else --- a different methodology. Seems like we went down the Prohibition road before with similar results. Drug Courts show lots of promise, but the ungodly profit motive remains. I wonder what the political situation in Central and South America would be like without that profit motive. What would it mean for Mexico if the drug cartels had no reason to exist?” 8:59:52 AM 4/21/07 “One of the problems is that drugs are only illegal for poor folks. Rich folks just get their doctor to write a prescription. They look at a crack ho and go tsk tsk tsk, while they pop prescription sleeping pills, tranquilizers, diet pills and stimulants, anti-depressants, and narcotic pain relievers. Why should a border guard die because he ran across a drug smuggler on the border instead of an illegal alien. Why should we miss out on all the taxes we could make to spend on rehab, instead of prison, surveillance and interdiction. Legalize it! Its already legal for the rich.” 10:03:43 AM 4/21/07 “It amazes me that "Reefer Madness" is still believed to this day.” 10:26:59 AM 4/21/07 “Part of the reason people fight the legalization of pot is due to the amount of jobs is will cost. Many police and other enforcement agency employees would loose their jobs. Busting on pot have been a boon for local cops who are struggling to fund their departments. Lawyers, judges, prosecutors -- all would see a massive reduction in employment; something the "system" does not want to see. It's silly to oppose the legalization for pot. I understand the addicts might want to keep it the way it is, but that has more to do about you and your journey with the items you abused. Just because you had those experiences, doesn't mean that everyone will have them as well. In fact, it's a pretty selfish 'tude. Legalize, use the money that would be generated through it's regulation and sale (tax it) to fund outreach programs that educate people on the effects (and affects) of pot on a person. One example -- cig smoke is down, due in part to educating about it, not making it illegal. The whole "the damn will burst if we legalize" is rooted in an emotional response. PS -- even some cops themselves have revealed what's been going on with pot: http://leap.cc/ What do you do when the cops proper are saying legalize? last edited: 4/21/07 10:59:30 AM” 10:57:12 AM 4/21/07 11:01:19 AM 4/21/07 “I have a bone to throw to the cops. Even if it is legalized there will still be a blackmarket for the product similar to cigarettes and the tax issue. A bigger one probably because I imagine the tax on pot would be outrageously high. So they can still keep some drug profits from busting blackmarketers.” 11:18:36 AM 4/21/07 “Can't the police and prosecutors focus their efforts on other kinds of criminals if drugs are decriminalized? You know, like rapists, molesters, embezzlers, slumlords, child abusers, etc. etc. etc. Not all crime is a result of drugs. Besides, if it was, and we eliminated the need for all those cops and lawyers, wouldn't that just free talented and bright people up to do more productive things? We would still have kids getting drugs before they're of age, but they're doing that now. At least they wouldn't be killing each other over who gets to sell them on what corner.” 11:40:36 AM 4/21/07 “"It's silly to oppose the legalization for pot. I understand the addicts might want to keep it the way it is, but that has more to do about you and your journey with the items you abused." Uh......mari-hoona is not addictive and non-toxic.” 12:11:03 PM 4/21/07 “Must have been the lifestyle I was addicted to.” 12:25:24 PM 4/21/07 Warning - this is a rant “I voted for the legalization of MJ. I will agree to disagree with all those who say it does not help those in chronic pain or suffering the ill effects of cancer treatment. I am a witness, it does relieve pain; it does increase the appetite for someone who has no desire to eat due to the poisonous chemicals in their bodies. MJ is a naturally growing substance. I can grow it in my backyard like a tomato, pick off a bud, take it in my house, let it dry, and then smoke. Cigarettes start with a natural product much the same as MJ. Many years ago, it was and is probably still used by some, in the natural form. Unfortunately, when this product began mass marketing, it evolved to contain very hazardous chemicals. Chemicals known to cause serious diseases and cause addiction are added. Yet, this product is legal. Alcohol (unless you are drinking Everclear) is much the same as Cigarettes. The damage to society is much greater, DUI, deaths due to alcohol related accidents, etc. These products not only increase taxes and revenue, it also balloons the cost to rehabilitate the victims of these drugs, either the ones who use it, their families who suffer the through this disease as well, and the system that must support the after effects. Yet MJ remains illegal. Go back in history and research why it became illegal. Not because it was hazardous to anyone’s health. Not that anyone did anything violent or harmful to themselves or society at large nor was there even much attention attributed to the use of MJ. It is directly related to the Harrison Act governing the use of narcotics. MJ was not even considered a narcotic at the time but it was determined that its use would increase as people turned to it in response to the unavailability of other drugs. Provide a written body of evidence where studies have been conducted that categorically proves that MJ is as harmful as these other legal drugs. No, I do not use this ‘drug’; I simply believe if it is illegal then Alcohol and Cigarettes should be as well. Otherwise legalize and save millions of dollars in ineffective drug control measures, harm that comes to the hiker or ranger that inadvertently stumbles on a crop with armed guards, while increasing taxes and revenue. Decriminalize it and reduce the backlog of court cases, reduce the number of inmates in overcrowded prisons and jails, and remove petty criminals from the population of violent offenders. Imagine if you will, the young person who commits the crime of possessing MJ, after the third offense this becomes a felony; three felonies and he is locked up forever. Explain to me his crime against society that warrants this punishment.” 12:43:31 PM 4/21/07 “On the other hand, legalization will destroy the economy of Appalachia.” 12:58:28 PM 4/21/07 “Don't forget Quebec, HyWay. Last summer while hiking The Long Trail in Vermont I was offered some "Canadian Hydro".” 1:23:06 PM 4/21/07 “Why would it destroy the economy? Wouldn't they be able to start growing more of it instead of mixing it in with other crops to hide it? **EDIT** Plus, there will be no more need for that brown crap from Mexico. last edited: 4/21/07 1:49:15 PM” 1:41:44 PM 4/21/07 “well I am not sure the lost cost of operator illegally will match the difference between the current value of the crop and the future value. Isn't that the big selling point, that legalizing will take the money out of the crop (on both sides, selling and interdiction). Tobacco can hardly keep a farm going these days. Thats why we are seeing more cotton fields. Besides, if I can grow it in my greenhouse and/or garden, why would I need Mr. Appalachia or Mr. Quebec. last edited: 4/21/07 1:56:24 PM” 1:54:55 PM 4/21/07
