Meet me, shake my hand....
Hello, everybody. I'm a relatively new backpacker (this is my second year - but I went out a ton last year), and I figured I'd say 'hi', as I'd been reading these threads the last couple of weeks. I have a couple problems:

a) I'm bored at work
b) I have a lack of camping buddies
c) My right-hand man (MagnumCrow) works almost every darned weekend.
d) I'm bored at work

So I'm curious/interested to meet and talk to some of you Adirondack hikers, swap stories/advice, and hopefully make a few partners in crime while I'm at it!

Me: 25 year-old long haired skinny dude, jack-of-all-trades and master of none. Besides hiking I'm interested in sports and music. Amongst other things. Like women.

Welcome to the board. I guess I'm one of the resident Adirondack nuts. Check out the trips page if you haven't already.

Hail and Well Met!!!
be there another shcolar present???

Hasufel...hmmmmmmmmm...a fine steed, but, before you are accepted into the asylum...please answer a few questions, if you don't mind.

Who was the original rider of Hasufel?, where did he fall?
and what skirmish did he fall during?
Who then rode Hasufel into some amazing adventures?

methinks these are fair questions, to someone who wishes to invoke the cannon.

Heya. Welcome. I'd say I'd hike with you but you are on the wrong coast to join the Posse.

Hail and well met indeed!!

-The original rider of Hasufel was Garolf or Garuld or something? I know it sounded like Gandalf.

-Hasufel's original owner died in the battle near fangorn, when Merry n' pip escaped.

- Obviously Aragorn rode his butt, that was easy.

- Kudos to you for knowing my reference.

I'm such a nerd, Hasufel is actually the name of my car. When I explained to a freind the reasoning behind my name, he said 'no, Aragorn's horse was Brego'. They're called books ladies and gentleman. Top to bottom, left to right, string words together into sentences.

So perhaps I should have titled this 'Need friens that don't work weekends, that live near me'???

Although I think since I labeled this as an 'east coast' thread, I'm excused...

stikmon, now for a Q. of my own:

What does my steed's name mean?
Hasufel

No dicentra, an east coaster (Albany). Although based on this thread I do seem to attract West coasties...

"Uh oh...there goes Albany...."

I live in Latham. A place called Valley View apartments. I grew up (18 years) in Malta (on Malta Ave Ext.), moved to Boston for 5 years, and have been in Latham for the last 2. I miss Boston but am closer to nature here, which is cool.

I believe you had a conversation re: black flies with my aformentioned right-hand man MagnumCrow on this page. He works behind the scenes at channel 6, and has to work basically every weekend. I'm an accountant at a Health Center (Whitney Young) in Arbor Hill, Albany, so I'm off every weekend.

There's my life story! Oh yeah one more tidbit, I spent my birthday last weekend on John Brown's Tract. Good stuff. I'm going to be loading my photos from that trip onto this page, I actually have 1 pic up there now.

Sounds like a great way to spend your birthday. Any particular area of the ADKs you prefer? I hike a lot in the High Peaks, but also like the southern/central region around Indian Lake when I want to get away from the crowds or go fishing.
lumberzac

I actually don't do the High Peaks that much, mostly for population reasons. Generally when we go out we're more looking for a quiet lake/pond in a valley, where we can sit our butts around a fire and relax. I guess we're more interested in the campsite then the hike, but obviously we don't want to set up camp a half mile from the car. I/we usually save peaks for dayhikes.

Pharoah lake is handy because it's close, but a zoo generally.

I really like a trail near Sacandaga lake, the Murphy-Middle-Bennet lake trail. It's a very easy hike, but Murphy lake has amazing campsites, and is always quiet if not empty.

I'm also falling in love with the John Brown Tract area near old forge - only drawback is the 2+ hour drive. And everytiem I go there, more people seem to know about it.

So what about yourself? What town specifically do you live in?

- Oh yeah, I'm extremelly interested in hitting up Indian Pass this spring/summer. Have you been there/heard of it?

I live in the small town of Greenfield, where I've lived all my life. My long-term plan is to eventually move into the park, but so far the lack of work has prevented that.

I hiked through Indian Pass last summer with a couple of TTers. The place is simply amazing. Here’s the trip report, http://www.thebackpacker.com/trailtalk/thread/31566,-1.php and here are some pictures I took during the trip http://community.webshots.com/album/152942262oKEvVO

ENOUGH!
I'm as familiar with the Rocks as I am with the Apps.

IE, Tetons, Wind Rivers, Sawtooths, White Clouds, Beartooths, Lemhis, Weimenuche;

Valley and Ridge of AL, TN, and PA;

Blue Ridge of GA, NC, VA;

AdDaks, Catskills, Greens, and Whites.

Trail for trail, the Apps are more strenuous... hands down.

"14ers"?
Sure, but the trailheads there are "10ers".

Westwardly, net elevation gain equals gross elevation change until reaching the pass. Then net elevation loss equals gross elevation change until reaching the basin.

Eastwardly, 3000 feet net gain equals 5000 feet gross elevation change. Net loss? Ditto.

Dicentra,
You would be quite surprised.
Come! You can have a heeping slice of crow pie for dessert - lol!

Greenfield eh? I dated a girl from porters corners for over 5 years. She was actually the reason I moved back to NY. Of course she dumped me less then a half-year after my life-altering change. Oh well! Can't say I didn't try!

That was actually in reference to Hasufel. Sorry dude. And the "decroted piece of crap" was a line from Napolean Dynamite. So is there a way to respond to specific users? I'm new here. As if that weren't obvious.
MagnumCrow

For starters I'm not a dude. lol.

For responding to specific users, you can either quote them or just use their name. I'm pretty low-tech, maybe one of the other geeky peeps here can give you better pointers.

Just for the record: crow is referring to our system of remembering who's beer is who's when we're holding it for the other. His beer is always in the right hand, because he's right handed, and my beer is always in the left hand, because I'm not left handed. You'd think this is dumb, but we've been doing it for years and I have yet to catch his cooties. And yes, I'm always the 'not left-handed' one, and he's always the 'right-handed' one.

I am NO east coaster. The eastern clan is full of folks of the finest ilk. No, there are plenty of personages from across the land. Each is of the finest caliber. I am located in the heart of the realm in SE missouri.
