Looks like a blizzard is headed for Shining Rock Wilderness this weekend. Though it looks like loads of fun, I will have my daughter with me and am worried that at 6000' conditions might get worse than predicted.

So, who has hiking weather this weekend that has a high percentage of NOT killing us.

It's gorgeous out right now and I'm stuck inside. What is worse is that I could be going to SafeCo Field for a Mariner's game, except circumstances prevent it. Long story. And it's Ichiro Bobble Head night too. : (

So no backpacking cause of the foot, no Mariners, no nothing. : (

hey hyway
My son and I are planning to be in the Shining Rock next week if the weather cooperates. We had a lot of rain today in Greenville, SC and they did talk about possible snow up there tonight or in the morning. If you are going this weekend you can still find some good hikes down around the 3K ft elevations. Several nice trails leave out of the fish hatchery parking lot and one of those might fit the bill. And who knows, the weather could clear up and be great up there.

SH, I would rather be above 4000' and have snow than be under and have rain. :)

The forecast:

Accumulation--for now we'll go with 2"-5" above 4000',

I can agree with that hyway. If you go watch out for the wind and it will get cold.

The wind is what concerns me. Winds of 30 mph with gust to 50. probably much higher than that up on those treeless ridges

SH, how old is your son? next weekend will be beautiful weather. I wanted to go this weekend because Savannah has Monday off from school, but it might be better to bail out this weekend and go next week when the views will be better. Of course, we'll have to put up with all the hoopleheads.

The Rain in Maine
falls mainly on the hills.

I can see why that didn't make it into the movie.

Now if someone would sing about the Hills being alive with the sound of music, they just might have something.

It's gorgeous here in Ruidoso NM right now, and I'm heading home to Phx tomorrow night. We are predicted to have one more weekend there of sub-80 degrees, so I'm going to squeeze in another trip to the Superstitions to some old mines. Every weekend like this is a gift!

my daughter is a young 11 yo (as judged my other girls in her class who will probably be pregnant by the time they are 16) but is a decent little hiker. We were planning to do the hike to shining rock and back then up to sam knob (?) in two nights, but now we will have to camp pretty close to the car friday night since we will arrive after dark.

Back in early December, 1978 after a night of heavy rain with an impending wet cold front I arrived at Black Mountain campground on the South Toe River about mid-morning with a pack, tent and warm bag and started up the 6.5 mile walk (3400' of vertical change) to the top of Mt. Mitchell. There was light showers and it was about 55 degrees. I had a thermometer.

About halfway up the mountain I came upon a man and his 10 or so year old son, both in fairly light clothes and sneakers and limited gear. I told them to expect a sudden change in the weather shortly and they might well turn and get back to their car. I remember his words:

'How bad could it get?' It was still fairly warm with very light rain.

I passed them up and about the time I arrived at the Camp Alice shelter which is still 2 miles from the top, I felt the first cool breeze. within 20 minutes the temperature dropped to 2 degrees below zero, the wind was roaring and the ground was white.

I had a nice overnighter, total snow was only about 2" but the wind gauge at the peak was bouncing around 80 to 120 mph the next morning and walking down the mountain that day I followed the footprints in the snow of that man and his son. I guess they had a good time.

Shining Rock might well be severe, possibly multiple feet of snow this weekend.

I man, we would go prepared with the proper gear, and I am sure we would survive. Seeing multiple feet of snow would be a blast, but not if it covers our tents :). She has a microzoid and I a Eureka Solitaire. It wouldn't take much to cover those. I think it would be a great learning experience for her, especially if we stayed within a couple miles of the car.

At any rate, we are going next week when the weather will be better for the views (hopefully)

If you are currently posting from home near Wilmington, I was thinking it would be real late Friday night when you got there!

A good friend of mine went to Shining Rock the day after Thanksgiving, 1974. He and his cousin walked in that Friday and awoke to 3' of snow Saturday morning. It took 2 days for them to get back the 4 miles to the parking area, snowing the entire time only to find their car completely buried. But that was during deer hunting season and many hunters were also there and the Park Service plowed the Parkway to the entrance of the Forest Service access road a couple of days later and so they got a ride off the mountain. He could not retrieve his car for 6 weeks.

That was a freak storm which also got another friend of mine in the Smokies in a similar fashion except he had not parked at so high an elevation.

I Man, I was talking about next Friday night. I already decided to cancel this weekends plans where I would have been driving up tomorrow morning arriving early afternoon. Might not even be able to get there anyway. Not being able to get my car out was one of the deciding factors.

Probably going to go over towards Sam Knob on Saturday. Looking at my map there is a loop you can make out of several trails. It's not a big hike but a nice shakedown "cruise" to start off the summer.

SH, my daughters last backpack trip was 21 miles, I don't think I should get her used to anything shorter than 12 miles (8 on saturday, and 4 back to the car on Sunday). Don't want to turn her into a car camper. I hope to do the 2 mile up and back to Sam Knob once we get back to the car if it isn't too late in the day. Got a 6 hour drive to get home.

Well the weather guys seem to have blew it again. It's beautiful here, sunny with puffy clouds and a nice breeze. Of course it could be raining up there and blowing 90 MPH. I just hope the weather is good next weekend.

Twenty-one miles?!!! Sounds like a death march. As for us ... we're backslackers. We'll hike to somewhere off the beater path and hobo camp for the first trip of the summer.

Sunny, cool (45*F), and wind blowing steady about 20-30mph here in Mauldin, SC at 10:25AM. It's going to freeze tonight. Could be snowing 50 crow miles away up on the Parkway. I wonder how hard the wind is blowing there today?
