Earth day should be everyday! We should all do something each day that helps it! It can just be something very little.

One problem we all have is the extroadinary amount of junkmail that we get in our mailbox... maybe you can sit aside an hour of time this weekend in order to start doing these things to reduce the amount you get!

Make your trash can your recycling can - most household waste can be recycled. Buy a composting bin for the leftover food you throw out. Make a conscious effort to examine everything before you throw it away for its ability to be reused in some way or recycled. I recycle a big can of stuff every month and only throw away a small bit of trash.

Why are you buying, for instance, that disposable toilet brush or those paper plates? Think about all the items you buy that you throw away after one use and how wasteful that is.

Repair things that break rather then automatically trashing it and going out to buy a new one. Shop wisely - buy things that are meant to last.

When you go to the store, pay attention to the amount of packaging products have. If you have a choice between something that has a lot of packaging and something that doesn't, buy the one that uses the least amount.

Another easy thing to do is to buy a couple of canvas bags to use at the grocery store. Most stores will give you a discount for using them so eventually they will pay for themselves and you're doing a lot to help the environment.

And pledge to walk or carpool or take public transit more... Walking is my favorite and you'll get more fit for backpacking!

If you must drive somewhere to do an errand, consider holding off until you have more errands that you can run all at once in one car trip. It's easy to do with a little planning. I do this and the result is I only go to town every couple of weeks.

Next time you move or take another job, make a conscious choice to reduce your commuting distance!

And next time you buy a vehicle, only buy as much vehicle as you need on a daily basis and look at the mpg rating and consider buying a hybrid (they're coming out with hybrid SUV's and trucks...)

Take the time to educate those around you on how easy some of these steps are and how important they are.

And yes, I agree, everyday is Earth day... because everyday Earth is your home and your provider.

I wanted to go to our Earth Day festival today, but with temps in the 40's and wind driven rain, I declined. So I drove my huge SUV around an littered instead.
