“in other words, unless i believe in the spirit world, youll never convince me that there are ABSOLUTES.

and unless you stop believing in the spirit world, ill never convince you that there arent ABSOLUTES”

If you got that from what I posted then you aren't even listening. I give up. You win whatever you're trying to win. Just for the love of gawd shut the fukc up.

i didnt "get that" from what you posted. its something im trying to get across to you. maybe ill figure out a different way. like marko said, hike your own hike

you believe what you believe because you believe in god and such

i believe what i believe because i dont believe in god (at least your interpretation) and such

capiche?

No. Your attempting to place individual worth on genes. You produce a gazillion copies of yourself. Aborting one copy is nothing.

i am not saying that aborting one copy would have a devastating affect on your quest to live forever, but i am addressing the view that you have that your genes are you, which to me is a case against abortion. i see your point that it's insignificant for reproduction though

Programmed to survive. Period. let me ask you something: Why do you think there needs to be a reason? Do you have any scientific evidence to suggest we must survive for some greater reason/purpose?

i don't think there needs to be a reason. my question wasn't directed towards any of my reasons for living on. in fact, i don't think that's necessary at all. i was asking why you thought our purpose is to survive, as you said your reason for choosing the morals you do are based on the need to replicate your gene-pool. you said "moral codes are about whats doing best to insure the survival of you and your offspring. About whats best to ensure the continuation of your genes." so i asked you why? why must we do that. what is your reason for believing that? is it faith in the need to ensure the continuation of your genes, or do you have a scientific explanation for it? i guess i'm asking you as a scientist more than as a philosopher, but you may certainly choose to answer how you please. all you've said so far is 'because' which is a nice little anticdote from college about a thesis paper, but it doesn't help me understand your POV

why must genes continue? i dont think there is a "why". they just do. natural selection allows the genes of the hardiest to survive

if i misunderstood the question, nevermind.

Hey crash, I owe you an apology man. I’ve been kind of out of shape today and short on patience. I’m on the nicotine patch to quit smoking and didn’t have one on today and it made me a bit of a dick. It’s been me and not you.

moonglo - I seem to suck at conveying my POV. lets try another way: I have an almost endless supply of my genes. Aborting a copy is not murder, its destroying one blueprint out of countless. Its like ripping up one sheet of paper that I started to write on, knowing I have many other blank sheets to use.

i was asking why you thought our purpose is to survive

Because we do everything in our power to not do the opposite of surviving.

I pray

you folks get out in the woods soon and do some backpacking soon.

Time spent in the mountains is not deducted from the rest of your life....

time spent on the computer is.

Why does one eat?

several reasons. (1) we hunger, (2) for enjoyment, (3) prevention of death, (4) to turn things into poo, (5) to win contests, (6) bordom, (7) to gain weight, (8) to lose weight, (9) to take their medicine in peanut butter, (10) because "everyone's doing it"

I'm sure there are many more.

Because we do everything in our power to not do the opposite of surviving.

this says to me you think it's instinctual (the purpose of survival is instinctual). unfortuantely, that doesn't make any sense, so i'll let the conversation end there

if any scientists believe that we are supposed to live forever, and your reason is something other than our purpose is an instinct (which doesn't make sense) please tell us here because i seriously would like to hear your POV

No. there is only one reason to eat. You choose to play. Fine. Enjoy.

bm - in all seriousness, i wasn't playing. when you say that our purpose of living is to avoid dying, that sounds like you're playing to me. we were talking about what the purpose of ensuring your gene pool continues, which you equated with living on. to say the purpose of living on is to live on is not an answer. it's akin to saying 'because' when asked 'why'. as a scientist i would assume you would have had a scientific reason for it, but by your answer i have to assume you're playing - sorry if it sounded like i was

Nope, I've been stuck home after eye surgery.

I did just get back from a short hike with the dog though :-)

I for one need to just shut the fukc and keep to myself for the next few weeks. Some people get down and pissy when they come home from a trip. I get super stressed and pissy before a trip. I’ve got like 2 weeks until my big trip and I’m already seeing my attitude getting shltty. I figure the week before my trip I’m just going to rip out my modem and be done with it.
