Mandolin that is “So I've been kicking this around for a few years and Buddur and Baume66 getting banjos in '03 kinda nudged me a bit more. Me being me and coming from a musical background I was kinda picky. I've been looking hard for one lately and finally after a bunch of research I bought one. A 1917 Martin bowl-back style one in "A" condition. Should be here this week.” 9:32:31 PM 4/25/05 “Wow! That's almost 90 years old! Very cool. I'd love to hear you play it.” 12:14:37 AM 4/26/05 “He has to learn how to play it, first. ;)” 9:05:02 AM 4/26/05 “Congrats HPM. Cool that you were able to find just what you wanted. Btcha can't wait for the delivery!” 9:18:02 AM 4/26/05 “It's leaving Omaha for here today. He'll be itchy for it by the end of the week. I get to play with it first. :)” 9:19:59 AM 4/26/05 “How do people play those little things?!?!? Just kiddin'......I've seen all kinda hands play all kinda instruments!! (The West Virginia Cook-Off in July could be a mountain jam!!)” 9:20:47 AM 4/26/05 “Scratch scratch It is pretty dang small, 24" overall. Cool thing is that it is a versitile instrument. Well suited to styles from classical, folk, celtic to bluegrass. Though there are better mando body styles for BG most of your masters (Bill Monroe ect.) all started on taterbug mandolins. I got some larnin' to do.” 10:01:46 AM 4/26/05 “The roving trail talk all star review.” 10:07:48 AM 4/26/05 “"Larnin'?" Reverting to your Hillbilly roots my Dear? It runs in the blood. My own daughter says "hail" instead of "hill." Dang accents.” 10:11:21 AM 4/26/05 “I do not have an accent. I have style.” 10:16:57 AM 4/26/05 “Yeah, right.” 10:17:33 AM 4/26/05 “Shouldn't that be, "hee-ill"?? I've never heard the term, "taterbug body".... Please follow Tommy's advice!! (bottom of page) http://myrareguitars.com/earachemyeastwood.html” 11:26:36 AM 4/26/05 “Okay, so it sounds more like "hay-ull" than "hail." Taterbug = bowl back. Look at a Colorado potato beetle, too.” 11:33:52 AM 4/26/05 “Hey, I'm hip!! I've seed a few mandolins.” 11:34:50 AM 4/26/05 “Lol!” 11:35:22 AM 4/26/05 “Those bowl-backs can be very pretty with the multiple strips of wood.” 11:50:16 AM 4/26/05 “Great, now you can move to north Georgia and sit on the front porch of an old store.” 11:52:06 AM 4/26/05 “Don't forget the dogs!!” 11:54:43 AM 4/26/05 “Taterbug is an old term common in the south/appalachia and in the country/folk/bluegrass crowd. Amen to Tommy. Even the best sound like the worst when not in tune.” 12:27:34 PM 4/26/05 its a beautiful thing “make a joyful noise!! i love me some mandolin music...good for you HPM... how about I pick you guys up on the way to the Lost Cove trip , baume is bringin his banjo, and some others are bringing various music making items... first weekend in june.....u can practice in the car and i will enjoy the private concert.” 7:13:33 PM 4/26/05 “Hay-ul is whar yuh goes when yuh dies ifn yuh ain't gude!” 7:21:47 PM 4/26/05 ******** POST PICS WHEN YOU GET IT ******** “Man, that's awesome, HPM!!! Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do, and to do it you just gotta do it. It's been 3.5 years since I got my jo and I don't think I ever spent money on something I enjoyed more (Buddha Bear may disagree with me). And now I'm building a friggin banjo, which has turned out to be *quite* a learning experience. You made a great decision...your fun will never end.” 7:35:22 PM 4/26/05 “I don't think I can swing the Lost Cove trip but hey, things can and do happen. Will do Buddur. I've played other things (trumpet, baritone, bass guitar) but none seemed to be "me". I've really been diggin mando for a while now and the time seemed right.” 7:53:11 PM 4/26/05 “The mandolin came in. Nice.” 11:17:40 AM 4/28/05 “And here I am at work. Grrr. Umm.... hack hack, cough cough. Uhhh I don't feel so good boss.” 11:19:07 AM 4/28/05 “Heh heh heh...I just finally got the thing tuned, too.” 11:32:16 AM 4/28/05 “What notes does it tune to?” 3:17:56 PM 4/28/05 “Grats on the Mandolin! I envy you musicaly talented people. All my life I have wanted to play an instrument, I have tried Guitar, drums, bass, Trumpet, and a piano. The piano is the only one that I have actualy been able to play anything that actualy sounds like music. I love music, and I love to write songs, but I can even play :(” 3:25:03 PM 4/28/05 “http://www.humanpackmule.com/mandolin/ Mandolins are tuned in fifths E A D G Tuning was a pain using the online tuner at mandozine.com Treebait got it really damn close too. I went out and got an intellitouch tuner tonight. It's very nice. I think better than the description for it on ol' Ebay.” 9:05:44 PM 4/28/05 “My fingertips hurt now” 8:53:02 AM 4/29/05 “Ref: Your link. A Mandolin on a pillow! Does this mean that you sleep with the thing? LOL.” 10:34:39 AM 4/29/05 “nope, Treebait is far more cuddly.” 10:36:05 AM 4/29/05 “Say, I have a great picture from Cosby of the two of you kind of cuddled. That is, you and treebait, not you and the Mandolin. last edited: 4/29/05 10:43:02 AM” 10:41:42 AM 4/29/05 “Lucky for HPM.” 10:48:53 AM 4/29/05 “treebait - Thanks for your comments on Hooters and the Pres.” 10:51:09 AM 4/29/05 “Developing dexterity in my left hand is going to be a challenge. Still having fun.” 9:45:27 PM 4/30/05 What A Mondo Mando, Man! “Cool Mandolin! 1917, eh? Love the look. Have you been practicing much???” 9:44:35 PM 5/10/05 “He's practicing right now. Laurel's dancing to his music.” 9:44:59 PM 5/10/05 very cool !! “i'm sure your fingers will hurt for a bit. it gets better in no time though. you'll learn to apply less pressure than the death grip you start with. just think, this is the beginning of something you can do for ever. the left hand dexterity is the thing i still struggle the most with. it is just constant practice to get you fingers to work individually at the same time. stay with it, even when you don't feel like you're progressing, because you are. it will come in plateaus. you'll notice a giant step, something that seemed impossible yesterday will be effortless today. it is the persistance that makes it happen that way. congrats, can't wait till we can pick together.” 6:41:03 AM 5/11/05 “Actually I am progressing steadily. I can already play a tune or two but it's still not solid. I've been using trusty 'ol Mel Bays complete mandolin method book for fundamentals. I also found some dude on ebay who was selling medeval and renassiance music for mando with CDs so I pick something out of that that looks doable and try it. The tune I've been working on most is "Come with me my Giselle" Sound file here about halfway down the page Knowing (more like trying to remember) how to read music helps a ton.” 8:58:05 AM 5/11/05 “Is there tablature for mandolin? Who needs standard notation when there is tablature? Tune that sucker!!” 9:09:53 AM 5/11/05 “Sure is, a pretty fair amount of it too. I use both. At some point I'm sure I'll find something I want to learn that is only available in standard notation. Plus I'm already used to reading standard notation so it's not like it's extra work.” 9:17:06 AM 5/11/05 “I was able to read that stuff about 35 years ago. Now, it's all C.R.S. baby!” 9:18:59 AM 5/11/05 “Anyone know how to transcribe tabs? I need a song lowered a key but don't know how to do that yet.” 9:33:07 AM 5/11/05
