Masten, downtown
The "designated sites" are fairly close together, park at the pines and you are there. The weather looks good for the weekend. We had rain up here overnight, enough to dampen the ground, but should be dry by the time you arrive Friday. The Lycoming County Department of Emergency Services announced that the county burn ban was lifted yesterday. Check again with Tiadaghton Forestry to confirm if burning is now permitted in the state forest.

Have a good time!

And, by the way...I am in. :)

Looking forward to seeing you guys again, Pennsy, RichB, ENS, PS, and jmitch....and I look forward to meeting the famous crazypace. Now if we could just get Bison to join us, that would be all the better. :)

yeah, but you've never seen Crazypace hike backwards, Fritz.
That's great that you can make it. I'm looking forward to it. Are you coming Friday night? I'm going to try and leave right from work to get before dark.

I'll call the State Forest tomorrow, but I have a feeling campsfires are still out until May 25, unless the ranger makes an exception. We can always hope. I'll beg.

I'll be there -- with beer of course...

I mean, we'll have to celebrate my birthday on Saturday night -- the only way TrailTalkers know how...

anyone have coolers? I don't have any coolers. We need coolers for steaks and beer. Everyone bring a bag of ice. I'm going to bring some of Reading's famous Clover Farms Icy Tea, maybe some amish potato and macaroni salad.

I'm in and looking forward to seeing everyone. It's been a long time and it looks like we will have nice weather. I'll be at Masten before dark. Armed with a good variety of early season flies I'm hoping Pleasant Stream is high enough for some good fishing. Whatever it is, it'll be nice to be out there.

Best way to Masten from I-80?

180 to 87?

EarthNsky

I'm going I-80 west to Rt. 180, Rt.15, Rt.14, turn right on Pleasant Stream Road. There's a store right at that turn, but I can't remember the name of it.
RichB

The camping spot is on Pleasant Stream road. Just keep on going straight until you get to Masten. The pavement ends maybe 2 miles past Marsh Hill and the road is just dirt for several miles.
RichB

5/05/05

Rich, I've never gone that way. I've always gone I-180 to 87 and then left on Mill Creek Rd in Hillsgrove. I might try your way cuz I always seem to miss Mill Creek Rd.

Camping update: Fires are OUT. I called today and the fire ban that was lifted is not connected to the State Forest. Small portable grills are ok. I don't have a grill so if you want steak, ENS, you'll need a grill.

I have a cooler and I'll fill it with ice. We have an ice machine at work. I'll bring a white-gas lantern that puts out good light so at least we won't be sitting in the dark.

I used to go that way, actually used to take Rt.118 across to Rt.87. The last time when I went 80, 15 to 14 the drive was seemed easier so I'll go that way again. I think it's slightly longer in mileage though.

same here. I was 4 hours late for my mother's birthday party a few weeks because of backpacking. I'm on double secret probation and if I'm late for Mother's Day, expect to see a lot of action on the "free gear" thread.

I got the camping permit today. It says I am responsible for the group's actions. I am doomed.

I'm glad I edited to fix that spelling error. I heard someone got fired today because of bad spelling.

Jeff, I'll probably hunt waterfalls with you in the morning. I want to get home in the early afternoon and see the family and hang out with the mom. Seeing some falls would be cool!

Pennsy has the permit. Who is in charge of female strippers? I'd take care of it, but knowing me, I would get Celine Dion look alike strippers :/

It looks to be a great weather weekend. Bring warm camp clothes. Temps will be in the mid 30's tomorrow night, and with no fire, it could be chilly, and I have dibs on the lantern heat.

Hey Pennsy, I got some imposter crocs at Payless today. Got them for $14 and they are pretty much the same exact thing, except Payless is selling them as womens footwear, so I had to make a fool of myself, which I tend to do anyway. Here is my trip report (anyway, if you can take your's back, you can save some money at payless)

payless shoes - a like trip report

“Alright, I went to payless shoes today. They have them there and consider them women's shoes. I asked the girl for a pair equivelent to a men's size 10 and the look and response I got was priceless. "Like those are like women's shoes!?! You like like them?? and I was like, "Like totally" ahem, (clears throat and lowers voice) I mean I explained that they can be be used for camping and creek crossing and the sort, also that gear stores sell them for both men and women. She was like, I mean, she said, "I like totally don't know anything about camping."

I have a feeling that they will come in handy this weekend. They are made by airwalk, so they can't be bad.

Hmmmm, I think I'll keep mine. At least I'll feel like a man in mine. ;o)

You might need them for the stream crossing. Last time, there was a log across it but who knows if it's still there. I'm bringing my light waders that I can possibly toss back across the stream.

ENS did you get the pink ones ?

I'll be there. I'm bringing a lantern, and stove-grill combo. If you guys need it for saturday night too, I'll leave it for ya.
I need to be home before 6pm. So if i can bail at 10 miles (mentioned somewhere) that would be great, 17 would be pushing it. or I can just hike in and turn back when the clock hits a certain time. Pennsy, help me out!! do some map mo-jo to see where I should park the bail out vehicle.
Crazypace
8:10:41 PM
5/05/05

Hmmm... if you park your vehicle down by the stream crossing on Pleasant Steam Rd, there are a few options. We should park a bailout vehicle as well, just in case. If we were to hike the trail backwards (clockwise), we'd be at the bailout point at 10 miles. If we go as originally planned (counterclockwise), it looks like you can cut off a few miles by leaving the OLP at Yellow Dog Run. Also, there is parking on Yellow Dog Run (7 mile mark), but I haven't driven there. We can always look at the map tomorrow night and figure something out.

I'm also bringing some beer. I have one of those soft coolers that holds about 1/2 a case.
7 or 10 miles = whatever. just want to get out and have a bag night.(and a beer).
I'll try and pick up some cigars too.

silly hikers, trails are for kids!!

you all should make a trip sometime to explore rock run and mcintyre wild area, simply one of the most beautiful places anywhere. amazing falls, deep plunge pools, chasms, chutes, waterslides... amazing.

all the streams draining the wild area have beautiful falls, plus a great view from band rock!

1/2 a trip report
Arrived at around 8:30 pm friday. Almost drove right passed the camp site. Until I saw this guy in my rear view mirror waving his arms around. It was pennsy !! Lucky I saw him, because I was about to take the wrong road. Got into camp where I finaly met a new TT'er - RichB. I unpacked and set up my gear, while pennsy fired up the grill I brought. We had steaks and some beer- Ah, roughing it in the great outdoors. Around 11pm or so, pennsy and me walked up to the road to see if we could spot any cars and to warm up. It was freeken cold!! I didnt bring any winter type clothing, unlike pennsy and richb who where very prepared.
ENS and Fritz arrived at exactly the same time from 2 different directions !! (NOTE: Crazypace meets another new TT'er - frtiz)
Seem's all the trips I've been on include ENS and Pennsy. Anyway, the guys set up, and ENS ate the last steak. We stood around the fire pit, which was a lantern set into the fire pit (no fires allowed). But we did pretend. When we decided to turn in, and I mean as we were zipping our sleeping bags, all of a sudden from the next camp site over, we heard a guitar and a woman starting to sing. I thought, did ENS go over and start singing Celine ?? But No, it wasnt him this time, it was much, much worse! I installed the old ear plugs and drifted off to sleep (while the others suffered). I got up around 6am and woke Pennsy and started the coffee (good coffee, might I add) and the others started to get up. We ate and I packed my gear and pennsy shuttled my x-terra down to my bail out spot. I had to be home saturday before 6pm.
The hike was awsome !! perfect temp. sunny
and we coverd miles quickly. We were at the bail out spot by 12:30 ! 13 miles. I said my goodbyes and headed home. It was the perfect get away for me, because I had a sucky week. I didnt care if I did 5 miles, I just wanted to get in a bag night, have some fun and do a hike. I had a great time.
Great hiking partners. I may have to change my trail name though, because I cant really pull away from these guys. Pennsy is like a rocket going up a mountain ! Great meeting 2 new TT'ers - I enjoyed talking with both of ya.
Till next time.
