So a friend recommended the E&J VSOP brandy, and I gotta say, it's pretty good, if a little on the sweet side. Normally I'm a Napoleon brandy fan, but the only brand of Napoleon brandy they carry in Alabama now is Reynal, and it's not so hot. But this E&J doesn't suck at all.

Of course, I am already drunk, so WTFDIK.

Would Grand Marnier fall into this category? That's my fave, straight up.

No, Grand Marnier is a liqueur...a little different.

There's a port on a western bay
And it serves a hundred ships a day
Lonely sailors pass the time away
And talk about their homes

And there's a girl in this harbor town
And she works layin' whiskey down
They say "Brandy, fetch another round"
She serves them whiskey and wine

The sailors say "Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl)
"Yeah your eyes could steal a sailor from the sea"
(dooda-dit-dooda), (dit-dooda-dit-dooda-dit)

Brandy wears a braided chain
Made of finest silver from the North of Spain
A locket that bears the name
Of the man that Brandy loves

He came on a summer's day
Bringin' gifts from far away
But he made it clear he couldn't stay
No harbor was his home

The sailor said " Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl)
"But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea"
(dooda-dit-dooda), (dit-dooda-dit-dooda-dit)

You're crazy, man. They wanted to have tea and crumpets with her

Yeah, Brandy used to watch his eyes
When he told his sailor stories
She could feel the ocean foam rise
She saw its ragin' glory
But he had always told the truth, lord, he was an honest man
And Brandy does her best to understand
(dooda-dit-dooda), (dit-dooda-dit-dooda-dit)

At night when the bars close down
Brandy walks through a silent town
And loves a man who's not around
She still can hear him say

She hears him say " Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl)
"But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea"
(dooda-dit-dooda), (dit-dooda-dit-dooda-dit)

"Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)

The great thing about brandy is you can buy the best bottle in the liquor store and it's about $12!

I had the VSOP on the last Sipsey trip.

When I was 10 or so I was outside playing, it was summer and hot. I came in for dinner and saw what looked like a glass of apple juice at my stepmoms place. I grabbed it and chugged it before she could say stop. It wasnt apple juice it was brandy...YUCK. I cant even smell it today.

Wow, I can't get over liquor prices down there - of course then I read the SpiritCoyote thread.

Try Calvados - it's an apple brandy and fabulous, IMO.

As always, make sure it's the real stuff bottled in Calvados and not some North American rip-off.

One of my favourite brandies is Metaxos from Greece, lovely aroma of roses and not sweet.

You had better stay away from that cheap stuff Dayhiker. It slows your reaction time when dodging flaming logs.

LMFAO ...oh the flaming logs! I have a bottle of E&J at home right now.

When I was just a young pup, we would trek to this big hill to go sledding in the winter. There was an old alchy that lived in a shack (and I mean shack) at the bottom of the hill. He would invite us in to warm up around the wood stove and give us blackberry brandy or warm cider with whiskey. Said it would warm our bones. We glady accepted :-) haven't thought about that in years.

hyway, I love that song! It's one of my favorites. : )

I have some Calvados I bought when in Normandy. Holy cow, it's some strong tastin stuff. Makes me do that dry cough thing after every sip. LOL! Didn't know it was a region named Calvados and had always wondered why it wasn't a very French sounding name. history of Calvados

Blackberry brandy is my grandmother's cure all. Coughs, tummy aches, colds, insomnia. You name it. (I think she was onto something.)

Nigal, I thought at first the "Brandy" thread was the chick. Thank God it's not! lOL!

In my ongoing research project: "Bad whiskey and bad decisions" It has been documented that hot chocolate reigns supreme in the "worst mixer" category.

However, it barely cracks my top 20 in the all around "bad decisions" category.

Pixie, Almost everything in French cuisine (bouillabaisse being a noteworthy exception) is named after its place of origin or fame, Champagne, Bordeaux, Macon, sauce béarnaise from the ancient province of Béarne (home to the 'chicken in every pot' Henri IV), Normandie (anything with apples), Chantilly for anything with whipped cream (and for lace), florentine for anything with spinach - from Florence, the recipe probably having been brought to France by Marie de Médici who invented French cuisine, Cognac, et c.

I have been known to carry a little E & J backpacking.
Usually no one other than me likes it and I have it all to myself.
Bit, I think I was carrying some that first time we hiked together at Fiery Gizzard.

Gremlin, I knew that. But I didn't know why it wasn't called "l'eau-de-vie de pommes Normande" being that it's from Normandy. And "Calvados" is not a French word. Having visited the region that Calvados is from two times, I never heard anyone call that region Calvados. That was why I was surprised.
