Ah yes, the inevitable TT thread degeneration. You ask a question about some electronics problem you're having and it will eventually turn into a discussion on sex or politics or God forbid, hiking...

“hey are those dang gadjits any good for use on the trail ?”

I think Garmin makes a gps thingy about the size of a matchbook that turns your pda into a gps. The only downsides are the screens I've seen are very hard to see in sun light and there is an issue of battery life. I used my Palm, when the damn thing used to work, to carry books on for reading on long winter nights.

I'm thinking about the same thing. Haven't done any research yet. I talked to one guy who had one with gps on it. Seems like there are tons of options.

Suggestion:

If you plan to use it with mapping software, determine what is compatible first. I think the mapping software should be your first priority, then see what is compatible with it.

“probably won't hike with it."

I used to download pdf books for those long winter nights of solo hiking.

What is PDA?

PDA Percentage of Defectives Allowable

PDA Public Display of Affection

PDA Personal Digital Assistant (electronic handheld information device)

Well, if you know what it is, why did you ask?
I saw one. The person, who had it, had made good use of it. It could be a valuable tool, such as for transmitting partial trip reports on a telephone.

I have an older IPAQ and I love it. The Windows operating system makes it easy to find software. Mines too old to make it worthwhile to upgrade to wireless so, I'll be in market shortly. I'll definately look at the newer models of what I alreadt have.

I have a used Dell Axim X5 that I'd let go for pretty cheap. I've also got a wireless card for it. I don't use it anymore because I use a Treo 650 for my PDA and phone. e-mail me if you're interested.

I like my old acoustic piano too.... but it doesn't hold a candle to my Clavinova.

Those “acoustic pianos” suck. That is why you never see them used in concerts. At least concerts that are about music not noise. Steinway’s are obsolete. (I have a Korg)
