I'll be in the extreme SW Black Hills in July, on a Passport in Time project, looking for undocumented rock art on the canyons where the Indians came from the plains to the south up into the Black Hills.

Can't wait!

I'll never forget the first time I drove over a hill on SD Highway 87 going from Custer State Park into Wind Cave National Park and had a view of the horizon. In front of me were the rolling hills of the plains, with a few pines or cedars here and there. It was twilight and I was thrilled, expecting Indians to come up over a ridge.

(you have to "settle" for buffalo, in Wind Cave National Park... like that is "settling")

So if you ever go out that way, I'd highly recommend that drive. It's my favorite, well that and going to Sage Creek campground in the Badlands... and across the Cheyenne River bridge in the middle of nowhere east of Buffalo Gap.

lol, yeah, I like South Dakota and the plains... :-)

Here's a vague map to the buffalo jump:

So Naomi is with the Cheyenne, right, or the Crow?

She is not with the Lakota, right?

I am reading Cheyenne Autumn now by Mari Sandoz. good stuff.

The subject of locational accuracy was brought up

and the scenes of the 2 young men somewhere in the east and then travelling across Tennessee to to get out west appeared to have been filmed out west.

I dig that it's on three nights in a row. I had to shut it off at 9:30 last night and can turn it on at the same point Sunday. That rocks.
So far it's a pretty interesting show. I look at it as entertainment though, not a textbook. If it's not dead-on accurate it's not a big deal to me.

I got busy with life and missed all the shows after the 3rd or 4th.

I'll probably rent the DVD when it comes out.

i think one of the big problems with last week was the new wheeler couple. not very good actors/ no chemistry or something.

also, custers land stand and jacobs death were pretty anticlimatic

Did Jacob actually die? I must have missed that part or was drunk or something.

I thought he was captured and just beaten up.

As far as authenticity, I was just out that way. I asked an archeologist about the driving buffalo over cliffs as the Indians flew over the edge, via rope, into a cave below.

Mr. archeologist laughed and said, "Yeah, I heard about that already. Must be a little creative Hollywood license."

Also, man, you can tell that those shots from last week are NOT Black Hills or Badlands. Sheesh!

Just remembered this, they have different directors each week, right?

I got home from my trip on sunday and managed to catch the previous week's episode and rolled right into the current week's.

They seemed to drag the Indian school thing on a bit too much....

i thought jacob was beaten to death.

remember, his parants, the orginal wheelers, came out to visit his gravesite

Yes, he was killed. They didn't show him dying, but left him there being beaten on. You knew he was dead when the friend delivered the letter... and yes, when the parents visited the grave at Little Bighorn.

I saw the parents at the site of the battle, but because I never saw him actually "dead" I figured he would have benn taken prisoner and held by the indian tribe.

I'm going to have to do this one on DVD, but I will watch it.

well, I suppose they could later have him show up in an Indian tribe, because they did not actually show him die. it's --assumed-- he died.

I bet he didn't die. I am saying it now. I bet he lives with the tribe that captured him and he ends up running into his sister that is with the other tribe. Yep! Sounds like a plot twister to me.

They have not shown the woman that was taken by the indian tribe after they attacked her wagon train. You know who I am talking about? She married one of the indians and had a child 2 episodes ago.

That's not "so concerned," lol, that is trying to identify Indian tribes. I've been reading books and trying to learn some differences. ;-P

From what I've figured out, Crows were bad Indians and the Cheyenne more like the Lakota, ie, not so bad, at least not portrayed that way in what I've read and seen... Stovey, Stovey, just trying to figure out the tribes. Am INTO that. :-)

Now back when she WAS FELICITY, well THEN I cared about Keri Russell. LOL!

Dang, I gotta remember to watch that last episode tomorrow night.
