Ooooh an arthritic toe!
Hey all,
I'm not an oldie or anything, but I managed to bash up my big toe in Tae Kwon Do a few years back at the tenderized age of 19!

I'm now retired from martial arts, and still my foot causes problems with hiking/running/ climbing, etc.

Has anyone else had to deal with similar obstacles in your quest to enjoy the b.e.a.utifal outdoors?

What kinds of shoe-dealers, physio-therapeutic measures did you take?

I've been to doctors, and they've said that I can only deal with it by not stressing it....i.e., ending my active lifestyle and ending my days on an exercise bike at the gym!

Any pointers? Even if they just include maximum dosages of Ibuprofen! Hahaha...the stuff works wonders, especially when you're doin' the Grand Canyon at 5 am!

Cheers!

Have you been to a podiatrist?

merrylegs711,

I have had a few minor foot issues, I hike when I can and run almost daily. I have found that having a doctor who is a runner (and doesnt like to prescribe stuff) has helped. Also finding a good podiatrist, mine will actually write a presrciption for shoes.

My wife Sass has had pretty serious foot issues the last 6 months, minor surgery, a bunion etc...turns out the bunion was/is corected by chiropractic adjustment. Her hips were rotated and twisted causing an improper footfall hence the bunion.

I geuss what I am saying is seek as many opinions and treatments that you can. Good luck, there is hope you just have to find it.

As for staying is shape - try bicycling instead of running for basic cardio workouts. then try an occasional stair running session to strenghthen your leg muscles - find some stairs with a fairly good slope where you can run up them flatfooted, rather than short steps where you have to run up on your toes.

No, I don't use a gym or health club. I like to work out in the great outdoors (urban/suburban) rahter than be cooped up in a boring gym.
