How would be sudden change of weather on south AT from VA - GA in July - Sep expectable?

I mean, can temp drop to freezing in that summer time?

Absolutely. Weather at 5K elevation is always unpredictable. Air masses collide and things happen. I've seen it snow in May.. and sleet in September.

So, extra piece of sweater would be good idea! I do have 20 F goose down.

weather
HIGHLY unlikely but not impossible. Take an extra layer. A 45 bag should suffice. I've seen snow twice in May, in 1999 and this year.

It snowed up there last week. I wouldn't expect a big problem in July, but my motto is "expect the unexpected".

yea depends on where you are at. lower elevations are usually fairly warm, but once you get into the high smokies, roans, and around mt. rogers it can change real fast.
