trip report coming tonight
plus lots of pictures. The weather was great, company even better. It was great seeing everyone.

The group started out as four, Crazypace, Pennsy, Fritz and myself. Crazypace had to bail to get back to his family at mile 13, and then there were three.

Pennsy, Fritz and myself finished the trail. Per the map the trail is 27 miles long, but the map is old and out of date. Pennsy GPS'd it and when were were done hiking we had covered 32.5 miles in one day. My feet still hurt, but I feel pretty good.

Now I am ready for the Devils Path!

oh no lol ..

Rich camped with us, but he didn't do the hike and fished in Pleasant Stream instead. Phantom was going to hike with us and things came up, so he arrived after we finished the hike. jmitch's plan was to camp with us and then do some bushwacks to some waterfalls today.

My dogs are tired. ENS is one sick mofo.

Roamy - we just walked a nice steady pace. We kept the breaks brief and to a minimum, but still took time to "smell the roses" as you'll see from all the pics ENS took. It also helps that it was a perfect day for hiking. We made even better time once we dropped that slacker, Crazypace. Just kidding of course, but I'm sorry you couldn't hang around to share the pain. The last ten miles, ENS had a Goo IV hooked up to him, and was flying like a banshee.

The campsite in Masten ghost town was awesome, even without a campfire, and it was a very enjoyable 2 nights. Thanks a bunch to the Crazy one for bringing the steaks and the grill. It was nice seeing RichB once again. Heal fast and get back on trail, Rich. PhantomSoul - LESS partying, MORE hiking! Mitch - thanks for briging the radio and for signing my book. Woohoo!

I only took a few pics, but I'm sure ENS will be posting the gazillion he took real soon. Right?

Another great TT trip and thanks to everyone for making it such a nice time. Great to see ENS, Pennsy, Phantom Soul, Fritz and Jmitch again and it was also nice meeting Crazypace. I was impressed with all the comforts Pennsy and Crazypace had for car camping. No roughing it this time around, but it did get cold Friday night and it was 36 degrees in my tent. It would have been nice to spend more time with everyone out of the trail, but it just couldn't happen this time around, maybe next time. The fishing at Pleasant Stream was not very good due to low and cold water conditions. I caught a few trout both days, but it was tough, the fish spooked and sluggish from the low and cold water. They just weren't feeding aggressively despite a decent Quill Gordon hatch on Friday afternoon. Saturday, there wasn't a mayfly hatch and then strong wind started making poor fish conditions even worse. Still it was nice being out on the stream and I know a few spots I'll return to when conditions improve.

Really good weekend, great company, excellent weather, nice trail, big blisters.

No wonder my feet were hurting so much...not the whole time, just the last 20 miles or so....

Great to meet CrazyPace and see some other TT friends again.

CrazyPace's "1/2 a Trip Report"
[copied from the other thread]

Arrived at around 8:30 pm friday. Almost drove right passed the camp site. Until I saw this guy in my rear view mirror waving his arms around. It was pennsy !! Lucky I saw him, because I was about to take the wrong road. Got into camp where I finaly met a new TT'er - RichB. I unpacked and set up my gear, while pennsy fired up the grill I brought. We had steaks and some beer- Ah, roughing it in the great outdoors. Around 11pm or so, pennsy and me walked up to the road to see if we could spot any cars and to warm up. It was freeken cold!! I didnt bring any winter type clothing, unlike pennsy and richb who where very prepared.
ENS and Fritz arrived at exactly the same time from 2 different directions !! (NOTE: Crazypace meets another new TT'er - frtiz)
Seem's all the trips I've been on include ENS and Pennsy. Anyway, the guys set up, and ENS ate the last steak. We stood around the fire pit, which was a lantern set into the fire pit (no fires allowed). But we did pretend. When we decided to turn in, and I mean as we were zipping our sleeping bags, all of a sudden from the next camp site over, we heard a guitar and a woman starting to sing. I thought, did ENS go over and start singing Celine ?? But No, it wasnt him this time, it was much, much worse! I installed the old ear plugs and drifted off to sleep (while the others suffered). I got up around 6am and woke Pennsy and started the coffee (good coffee, might I add) and the others started to get up. We ate and I packed my gear and pennsy shuttled my x-terra down to my bail out spot. I had to be home saturday before 6pm.
The hike was awsome !! perfect temp. sunny
and we coverd miles quickly. We were at the bail out spot by 12:30 ! 13 miles. I said my goodbyes and headed home. It was the perfect get away for me, because I had a sucky week. I didnt care if I did 5 miles, I just wanted to get in a bag night, have some fun and do a hike. I had a great time.
Great hiking partners. I may have to change my trail name though, because I cant really pull away from these guys. Pennsy is like a rocket going up a mountain ! Great meeting 2 new TT'ers - I enjoyed talking with both of ya.
Till next time.

Wow! Sounds like a great trip. And the miles, ouch! A word of caution about GPS. I carried mine while walking a marathon race recently. After completing the 26.2 mile race, the GPS said we'd gone 25.5. There are inaccuracies with them. Still, a great feat (or is that feet?)!

Yeah, my friends back home wouldn't let me leave my birthday party soon enough (we were still chilling at the diner (after, after party) at like 4 AM when I was forced to decide to can the hike)...

Glad I managed to at least get out there and camp for the night in my new Camp Dome tent. Ahh, it's so nice to be able to sit up in the tent...

I didn't get to do the 30-miler, but I decided I'm gonna take a stab at the Devil's Path thing anyway. I figure worst case I'll just give up at the half-way point...

Y'all forgot to mention that jMitch actually cooked!!! (Though he did spill the ramen noodles all over the table...)

Oh yeah, I forgot about the big Jmitch cookfest. It just about floored me. Sure, it was just ramen noodles, but it's a start. He is still Jmooch though, cuz he used my stove and ate my mushrooms. ;o)

Fritzy - you're as cool as Artex. So cool, that we're thinking about signing you up with the Ebasnobs. We were gonna let ENS in, but he's out cuz he showed up wearing girly camp shoes.

I definately agree. I find that the GPS mileage shows less mileage than the true mileage. IE: you lose the signal at the beginning of a zig zagging trail. After a mile of zig zagging, the gps locks back on. It's gonna "catch up" but measure the point to point reference, which would be less than a mile. Given that, I'd say the Old Logger's Path is at least 32.5 miles. The signal was good all day so I'd say it's pretty close.

Is it possible for a GPS to do the opposite and show a longer distance than the actual difference?

Great pics, ENS! Hey, how was Rock Run on Sunday? From those pics, I'd say you had an amazing morning. I'm glad you guys didn't talke me into staying longer, cuz I was still late for Mother's Day. My dang brother moved the time up 2 hours and didn't tell me. :o(

thanks guys.

Jackstraw, the elevation gain isn't too bad, 3500 feet spread out over 30 miles. There are a few good climbs on there, but nothing more than 500 feet. I think it's a good trail for a newbie. There are a lot of good campsites along the trail.

Waterfalls look great. I wish I could of stayed for that. I have no plans this weekend. I'm thinking I might go back up to finish the rest of the trail. Mabey do the car camp thing again and day hike the other 19 miles.

Pennsy - The Ebasnobs sounds like a cult. That makes you a cult leader :-0 !!!!!

the waterfall on Yellow Dog Run, you need to bushwack down into the gorge to see it up close, but it is awesome. The waterfalls on Rock Run and Miners Run aren't on the Old Loggers Path, but they're short easy bushwacks. Rock Run is really awesome.

Mabey I'll bag the waterfall on yellow dog run. Dont feel like bushwacking into the unknown to see the others.

While it's theoretically possible, within the accuracy of the GPS unit, to overestimate mileage, I think you have it when you say the GPS periodically loses signal and hence loses mileage. For any long trek I believe they will always underestimate mileage.

32+ miles? Wow, y'all are nuts. Some thru-hikers can't pull that mileage (of course, many can). Congrats on the successful trek.
