Welcome!
Hi there! Birch and I live in SE MI (near Detroit). There's a trip here and there, none in the works at the moment though, aside from a the kid's trip in July. Check the trips page, there might be one to Fox Rv pathway too.

Have you been lots of places (hiking) in MI yet? There's a ton of different folks who've been all over the trails in MI. Ever have questions about places, etc, just ask and someone will know the answer.

Wow Tarabull-- Really?!

If you go up, north, you better be ready to make some good pasties (cornish meat pies, NOT the type found at strip bars.. to the uninitiated riff-raff out there....)

I'm finally going to be off of work after Memorial Day-- Was hoping Thinkbubelz & I could do some local hikes with you!!!

Isn't that picture from the PastyCam hilarious? It was probably a year ago it was first posted. I visit Pasty.com every day!

Hi aswainst, I'm a Michigan gal too, in SE Michigan for now, will be moving to Frankenmuth in a year! I haven't done much hiking lately, but I've kind of joined the TT Running Club and run once in a while with Sassafrass. Good group of people you'll find here. Welcome!

Yes, and world famous chicken dinners, don't forget those!

Luckily, we've avoided the chicken dinner for the 8 month's G's lived there. I believe that trend will continue....

Well, I've lived in Michigan for most of my life. I think I've had the chicken dinners maybe twice....
One of my friends suggested going to the downstairs shop at the main restaurant (is it Zehnder's or something like that?) I guess the little shop in the basement serves the same chicken dinner, but in edible portion sizes... :-) AND a lot cheaper... but if you go to the dinner, make sure you have at least 4 people...they give so many side dishes that you'll bust a gut if just 2 of you go...

BTW-- you guys forgot to mention "Tony's" restaurant at Birch Run! :-)

During my senior year in college, I spent a lot of time on the bowling machine at Skips Tavern in Flushing.

When I went to graduate school at Purdue, had a heck of a time finding another bowling machine. We finally heard about one in Mulberry and went here. My buddy rolled his Corvette on the way home...we never went back.

It's all true!

You know, Frankenmuth is a lot cooler than you'd might think. There are some pretty nice little bars in the place. And there are some funky little shops with woodcarvers.

Also, my last two pairs of shoes come from the Birch Run outlets. Cheap and good.

I also like that little buffet place they have in town. Good food for cheap, but I think it's only on certain days of the week.

My weirdest memory of Frankenmuth was spending the first day of the Iraq War there at a conference. I was surrounded by all the noisy video games at the Bavarian Inn. Ping-pong balls were flying everywhere as I was trying to watch a TV with tanks driving across. Kind of surreal.

There are some interesting looking state game areas nearby that bear some exploring. I did a perimeter search for trails along the thumb shoreline and then started to backtrack inward to the SGAs. Large blocks of land that look cool.

Towards the end of June, Thinkbubelz & I might have a few free weekends... Maybe we can do a weekend trip somewhere with others in the area?

We are trying to decide where to go for our vacation in August... We were thinking Glacier, but the cost might be a bit prohibitive for us this year... :-( Another place we are considering is Isle Royale or perhaps something on the east coast... (lots of friends in Philly, DC and NYC...)

The thing I'm most concerned about if we go to Isle Royale is the boat out there-- I get seasick easily and don't want to be a victim of the choppy waters... :-( But, we went to a lecture at REI and it looks like a really cool place to visit.... I understand that Isle Royale, and Denali National Park are 2 of the least visited National Parks! :-)

(Sure wish we could go back to Alaska, but the cost is simply too much for this summer.)

We sometimes go up to the Traverse City Area to go canoeing, or up near Midland for tubing..... :-)
Any suggestions for good hikes around there?

welcome aswainst! i'n a couple hours northeast of Detroit. thats sorta kinda close to Michigan.

hey pink- you could drive up here and visit Algonquin, or the Bruce penninsula, or Killarney. August isn't usually too buggy but Algonquin might be mozzie heaven until the end of the month.
