I've tried to dehydrate sausage before and when I re-hydrated it, it smelled like garbage water.

There was something there about dehydrating your sausage and then it smelling like garbage....Nah...I think I won't go there today.

Laq, when I brown stuff down I season it too.

not to bring old things up but I was gone for a bit so i am late on this thread. why not talk about what happened,I know it may be hurtfull to some but if somebody learns something and a life is saved down the line is it not worth it?
I got nailed by hypothermia a few months back and if it was not for Lorax I do not think I would be here. I posted a topic about it because I thought it would help and it did lead to a good discussion
In closing I knew some of these people too

LOL... so much for "ask an honest question"!

I still want to hear more about dehydrated sausage. I do ground beef ala sarbar1's web site and it works well (brown, rinse off the fat in a colander, and dehydrate). Do you use the same process?

cook, pat dry, dehydrate and pat dry with a paper towel every so often during the drying process. I have done it for years

JS,

Dehydrating sausage is recommended only if cooked thouroghly first or with the use of a curing agent. It is unlike ground beef in that it has guts and stuff which develop bacteria when heated at a low temp.

Degreasing the sausage can be tricky, but it's definitely better to cook the sausage over higher heat before the dehydrating process. Press the sliced sausage between absorbent layers of paper or something to remove as much grease as possible. When dehydrated, it's best to vacuum pack it and store it in the freezer until just before your trip. It's a bit of a bother but prevents storage rot.

There is one McGreasy boy that will give me all the mild picante packets my heart could want here.

This was my lunch yesterday. It was good!

The recipe:

At home:
Split a packet of Knorr Red Bell Pepper Pesto Mix into 4 portions. I used craft ziploc bags for this. 1 bag per meal.

In a quart freezer bag put:

4 ounces cooked and dehydrated pasta (weight after drying)
1/4 cup freeze dried vegetables or 3 Tbl home dried mushrooms

Also take:
4 or so packets of Parmesan cheese (or up to 1/4 cup of shelf stable Parmesan cheese)
1 packet olive oil (1 Tbl)

Cover pasta & vegetables with boiling water. Push out air, seal well and put in a cozy for 10 minutes. Open bag and if any left over water, drain off most of it, leaving a bit behind. Add in oil, pesto mix and mix well. Top with cheese, stir again and enjoy.

Each bag serves 1. Ford very much enjoyed this meal.
Using 1/4 of the pesto pack per meal gives good flavor without being too strong. You can use less or more to taste. You can start with half of your packet and mix it in, then add more to taste.

Would work well with dried hamburger added with the dry ingredients.

Growing up my family saw some tough times and we ate a LOT of hamburger helper and spaghetti. I still love both to this day.

But no, I haven't tried it. Sorry. I am worthless.

If you like HH already, you will like it. It can be done like Ezy Mac (that is basically what it is!). To fill you up though, you'll need two packets. To me it smelled gross. The kid though, he liked it somewhat.

I bought a box and had one for dinner last night. It was OK, not much more than Mac-N-Cheese like sarbar said. There was maybe an ounce of hamburger.
