Girls and Boys

“My 9 yo daughter's (Brianna) school is less than 5 minutes from my office so I ran over to have lunch with her today. I was also going to give her some tylenol because I took her to the dentist today, but she was in good spirits so no need for that.

My purpose for this post is to ask if I am doing anything wrong. You see, she is allowed to pick 4 other kids to go outside and have lunch with us. They were all boys and she was the roughest one of the lot.

Do you think I am spending to much time with her? Is the world ready for a mini-Hyway? Are my shoes untied?”

“She likes to beat up boys, eh? Might be useful in the future.

My daughter has lots of female friends, but up until this year (she just turned 10) she preferred to hang out with the boys. Last year, one boy was disappointed because my daughter couldn't come to his sleepover party. She was the only girl he thought about inviting.

Pretty soon all boys will stink hyway, don't worry about it too much.”

1)You can never spend too much time with your daughter.

2)If she is rough in a negative way, you should definitely try to explain what behavior you think is appropriate, and also model it yourself.

3)Being friends with boys is not a bad thing. But does she have friends among girls because if not you may want to explore why, before she gets too much older (invite girls from her school for playdates, to movies etc)”

“I forgot to mention to ask her what she thinks the image is that she presents to other people. My 10 year old daughter is similar, very athletic, lots of friends who are boys. But she has a very specific vision of herself and is very insulted if she acts goofy, does some funny pratfalls and then we laugh at her. To us it looks like she is purposely trying to make us laugh so we are shocked that she gets upset. So it would be interesting to see how your daughter sees herself.”

“Bit and Lyndy, Brianna has friends that are girls. The last time I went to lunch with her she invited a girl, but she prefers to play with boys because they do more rough housing and such. She likes to run and tackle and play with dirty rocks and stuff. Barbies, Tea sets and dresses are not her thing.
