OK, this is one of my pet peeves.

Ebay Idiocy.

Here is a prime example:
Sony camera

Scroll down and take a good look at the picture. Then note the current bid.

Morons.

Congratulations, you have just paid more for a used POS than the seller did when it was new.

I know a guy who emails people like that and explains to them how stupid they are.

I've thought of doing that, but why? The idiots will remain stupid.

It always amazes me how much people pay for things.I once got more for a Tuner than I paid for it (though I got it for a bargain price), I didn't relaize until I found the receipt.

There don't seem to be many bargains out there unless you're looking for something obscure.

My brother thinks there is widespread fraud, that is, people bidding things up for their friends. I think there's just widespread stupidity.

It can be frustrating when you want to buy older technology on the cheap, but some moron bids up past what a good price is, not realizing they could probably add $100 to their bid and go buy a brand-new (whatever).

One of my in-laws' in-laws will buy something off of E-bay that's poorly presented; take a new picture of it with a nicer background; then sell it for a profit!

I was looking for a pair of speakers. I think all the ones I was looking at got to within $20 to $40 of getting an equivalent new pair.

One of my daughter's friend's mom gathers up their old toys and sells them on Ebay. It's crazy.

You could probably sell used diapers there.

I think people get caught up in the bidding frenzy and lose their restraint.

You have to know what you are willing to spend and the value of the item before you bid.
humanpackmule

Exactly. I always determine a maximum bid for an item, and stop watching it once it passes that. If it doesn't I enter that maximum bid 20 second before the item closes. Usually works, but not always, lol...

don't forget to add the shipping cost to a product. Sometimes they will put you over the cost of a new item.

Yah, you really have to watch shipping costs. Especially on some of the "Ebay stores". When I first started poking around, I noticed that for some of them shipping was $30.

Another thing I love is when the seller posts how much he paid for the thing new.

"I bought this 2MP camera brand new for $400 4 years ago!"

Yes, and today I can buy a 5MP camera, with technology three generations newer than what's in your camera for $255. Your point?

V, I don't think it'll matter. There's an infinite number of morons out there who'll buy it.

I have an old toy digital camera, 160x120, or about .02MP. I bet some moron would buy it for $25, which is about what I paid for it.

Good morning, fellow Ebay'ers. Today, I'd like to discuss the other side of Ebay idiocy, that is, seller idiocy.

Submitted for your review: Canon Powershot S100.

The S100 is a compact 2MP digital camera, announced 5 years ago. It is about 5 generations back as far as camera technology goes. It won't even take movies, for Pete's sake.

The latest comparable camera from Canon is the SD500, which can be had for between $450 and $500. It's a 7MP camera, with all the latest technology.

So, let's say that a new S100 (if one existed) was worth 1/5 of an SD500. Using the higher price of the SD500, that would make a new S100 worth about $100. But wait! This S100 is used! Personally, I want at least a 25% discount on something used. That makes it worth $75. The seller is throwing in a CF reader, worth about $10 used, a case, worth nothing in my book, and a 48MB CF card, which, with larger flash cards going for about $.09/MB is worth about $5. All that together comes to $90, which represents the absolute reasonable max bid for this camera, and I wouldn't bid that much since it's not really worth that to me. I don't really need the CF reader or the extra CF card.

The seller's Buy It Now! price is $150, and he wants $10 for insured shipping. Sheesh.

You think paying too much for a camera is crazy - take a look at the climbing section under sporting goods.

What holds your life ?? - the rope.
People buy ropes on E-bay.
Used ropes are sold on E-bay.

All climbers should, and most climbers do, keep a log of how old a rope is and how many falls have occurred on the rope.

The E-bay ropes listed as *NEW* would be more accurately described as *UNUSED* some could be many years old, sitting in some garage at 130 degrees in summer.

Nylon loses elasticity over time, and when stretched under load multiple times.

Climbing ropes come in 2 different types dynamic (stretchy) which are OK to fall on as they absorb shock, and static which do not absorb shock and can only be used for top-roping or rapelling, get it wrong and it will kill you.
New dynamic ropes come with the manufactureres paper saying how many falls (using a fall facter computation) can be made on the rope before it is no longer safe to fall on. Used ropes ~ well you have no idea and you are betting your life.

Manuka--
Talking about ropes-- we went waterskiing with one our friends many years ago--she had a couple of "used" ropes and a new one. One of our friends (who is a weight lifter) broke both of the used ropes (and he wasn't even trying to do anything fancy--just trying to stand up on the water ski!)...Imagine if he had been doing something "fancy"---he could have gotten injured...

**********************

BTW-- the selling used clothing on Ebay thing works-- My sister's friend was layed off and started going to places like Marshall's and TJ Maxx, and visiting major department store's clearance racks...

She now sells designer clothing at a profit and has been able to maintain living in NYC with her new "business"!

Actually, mistakes like this often result in the item going for a lower price. So, if anybody is looking for a Nikon Coolpix 2100, check that auction again in a few days.

Ah, Ebay newbies. Gotta love 'em.

Pay close attention. First off, his minimum bid for the camera is $500, when there are stores selling kits for the same camera, brand new, in the same category, for more than $100 less. Then, he's charging $50 shipping. Then, he's requiring $500 for shipping insurance, which gets added to the total shipping price. That's right, not insurance for $500 worth of goods, $500 of insurance, which is enough for thousands of dollars of goods.

Surprisingly enough, no bids!
